Liverpool and AC Milan produce another Champions League classic settled by Jordan Henderson strike

What a hit. What a game. What an atmosphere. Jürgen Klopp had puffed out his cheeks and said “wow” when contemplating the toughness of this Champions League group and so it proved. The “wow factor” is back with Liverpool defeating AC Milan in a barnstormer of a tie, won through a glorious strike from captain Jordan Henderson – his first Champions League goal in seven years as he channelled his inner Steven Gerrard. Feel the noise when that struck the net.

There was an allure to this meeting between European royalty, with 13 European Cups between them, and it did not fail to deliver. The crowds are back and, it appears, the real Liverpool are back, even if Klopp almost paid for the gamble of resting Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool had to win. With Atletico Madrid and Porto also in this group and drawing in Spain it could well, as Klopp predicted, go down to the wire and a slip-up here could have been costly. Instead Liverpool already have some control.

Remarkably this was the first time these grand old clubs had met at Anfield; the first time, in fact, outside of the final of this competition with contrasting memories of 2005 and 2007.

A huge banner reading “25.05.2005 There are places I’ll remember all my life” ran at the foot of the Kop and it crackled as Milan won the toss and asked Liverpool to attack that end in the first half.

For 42 minutes it looked like a mistake. Liverpool tore into them, overwhelmed them. But they only scored once before, within a couple of stunning minutes, Milan somehow went in at half-time in the lead.

By then Liverpool should have been out of sight. There was no way they could maintain their intensity, but it should have brought more than Fikayo Tomori’s unfortunate own goal which was forced by Trent Alexander-Arnold, who always appears to be at the centre of debate.

Liverpool had bridled at England’s use of him in midfield and, inevitably, he made the breakthrough coming in from right-back as he exchanged passes with Mohamed Salah and brushed aside Rafael Leao before bursting into the penalty area. His cross-shot deflected off Tomori’s leg as the defender threw himself to block, wrong-footing goalkeeper Mike Maignan and spinning into the net.

But then both Milan’s goals came down Liverpool’s right, even if analysis of them showed that Joe Gomez, making his first start since November after recovering from a serious knee injury, was probably more at fault than Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool should have ended it before that. Milan tried to slow things down, but Klopp’s side were having none of it. Such was their intensity that the ball went flat, having had the air walloped out of it, with Klopp throwing it into the crowd, where it was clutched by a lucky fan.

This was the first full house at Anfield for a European game since March last year, when Liverpool were knocked out by Atletico in the last 16. The fans were desperate to savour the occasion. So were their pumped-up team.

The lead should have doubled when a fierce half-volley by Andrew Robertson struck Ismael Bennacer’s outstretched arm. The penalty was awarded and Salah drove it powerfully, but it was too straight and Maignan blocked and recovered superbly to turn away a diving header from Diogo Jota as he met the rebound. After 17 successful penalties it was Salah’s first failure in almost four years.

Before that chances were spurned by Divock Origi – on a rare start – and Jota as Milan, despite their heritage, looked exactly like a team who had been out of this competition for seven years and were reliant on some relatively callow players. But how that flipped.

The moment Liverpool stood off, Milan took advantage. They worked the ball forward with Gomez slow to react having failed to track Ante Rebic and playing him onside. The forward collected a smart pass from Leao to side-foot around Alisson Becker. Incredibly, just seconds later, they struck again after attacking down their left once more through Leao. This time, Rebic squared the ball to Theo Hernandez, whose shot was blocked by Robertson as he desperately slid in, but, as it trickled goalwards, Brahim Diaz poked it over the line.

Little wonder Klopp looked stunned.

Early in the second half Milan had the ball in the net again – only for it to be ruled out for offside – as did Liverpool. But this one counted.

Fabinho picked out Origi on the edge of the area and cleverly scooped the ball over the Milan defenders. With Maignan hesitating, Salah stole in and guided it past him. That is 72 goals in 100 Anfield games for him. Simply incredible.

It was hardly brave from the goalkeeper but no matter. The noise levels climbed. “Allez, allez, allez,” rang around and Liverpool drove on, winning possession back time and again and forcing yet more corners.

From one such set play, Bennacer headed the ball out, but only as far as Henderson on the lip of the area. He met it on the half-volley. Maybe it came off his shin but no matter. Maignan had no chance and no one else had time to react as Henderson wheeled away, cupping his ear in celebration as another famous Anfield night unfolded. Meetings between these clubs are rare but they have all been memorable.

As it happened

09:22 PM

Klopp on the performance

"We start incredibly well. We played a super game. Super intense game, and footballwise too. We got a bit carried away by our own football. We didn't keep it that simple"

09:07 PM

Henderson on his first Champions League goal since 2014

It was nice to get back on the scoresheet. It's something I need to do more of when I play in the eight [the advanced midfield position] arriving in the box.

09:04 PM

Andy Robertson on what was said at half time

There wasn't much to solve. The last 10 minutes (of the first half), the gaps between midfield and defence were too big and we had to close the gaps. As soon as we did that there was no room to play.

09:02 PM

Not bad was it?

09:01 PM

Underrated?

08:53 PM

FT: Liverpool 3 AC Milan 2

Three important points in a tricky group for Liverpool. They were outstanding in the opening period of the match, were hit with two sucker-punches before half time, but rallied to score two more goals in the second half. Henderson's winner on the half volley was a beauty.

08:52 PM

95 minutes

One last long ball forward from Milan headed away by Matip. Alexander-Arnold's clearance was poor but Diaz shoots over the bar from 30 yards with the last kick of the game.

08:51 PM

94 minutes

Milner takes it into the corner, and this time he is the recipient of a foul near the corner. Liverpool one minute from all three points.

08:50 PM

92 minutes

Liverpool not looking in much danger but Fabinho concedes a foul on halfway. Then Milner chops down Diaz close to the right touchline. Milan will pump this ball into the box, looking for Giroud or the centre backs.

Tonali to take, but it is too flight and a combination of Mane and Jones clear.

08:48 PM

FIVE MINUTES OF STOPPAGE TIME!

Mane looked like he might settle it but he did not get his shot off in time.

08:47 PM

90 minutes

Diligent defending from Oxlade-Chamberlain in his own half. Kessi and Giroud rather get in each other's way in the box and Alisson gathers.

08:46 PM

88 minutes

Liverpool have a free-kick deep into Milan territory. Whipped in by Milner but Milan head away, at an expense of a Liverpool throw. Not long now, Liverpool fans will be waiting to see the number on the fourth official's board.

08:44 PM

85 minutes

Tomori and Maignan almost involved in an awful mix up but Mane was offside in any case. Calabria chopped inside and played a good cross with his weaker left, important header behind from Gomez with Giroud lurking. Milan corner. Kajer flicked it on but it rolled through to Alisson. Nervous moment for Liverpool, that could easily have rolled into the path of a Milan player for a tap in.

08:41 PM

83 minutes

Another couple of changes on the way from Liverpool: Milner and Oxlade-Chamberlain coming on. Milan are about to bring Paolo Maldini's son Daniel from the bench as well. Henderson and Salah were the players to make way for Liverpool.

08:38 PM

80 minutes

Play stopped while Milan right-back Calabria receives treatment for a knock on the small of his back. Liverpool are starting to approach this more pragmatically as they look to see this out, dropping into defensive shape.

08:35 PM

78 minutes

Giroud threatening again up against Gomez in the area. Good cross from Hernandez from the left but the former Arsenal and Chelsea striker did not get enough on the header.

08:33 PM

76 minutes

Excellent goalkeeping from Alisson to punch a ball into the Liverpool box stood up for Olivier Giroud. Kessie got tangled with Fabinho in the box and the referee blew his whistle...but he gave the foul in Liverpool's favour.

08:31 PM

Henderson's strike

08:31 PM

73 minutes

Good defending from Simon Kjaer but Liverpool have a corner. Taken short and dealt with but Liverpool pick up the second ball to sustain the attack. Lovely dribble from Curtis Jones and he curls a shot not far wide with his left foot.

08:28 PM

70 minutes

Liverpool making midfield changes shortly after scoring: Jota replaced by Curtis Jones and Naby Kieta replaced by Thiago. Sandro Tonali is coming on for Bennacer for Milan. Is there another twist in this game?

08:27 PM

GOOOOOOAAAALL! Henderson with a screamer

Milan headed the corner clear but there was Henderson just inside the D and he caught a difficult half-volley so sweetly with his right foot and it flew past Maignan into the bottom corner. That was Gerrard-esque. Liverpool lead again.

08:25 PM

68 minutes

Jota though he was about to score the winner! Worked a yard for himself close to the penalty spot but it was a wonderful block from Kjaer to deny him. Liverpool corner.

08:24 PM

66 minutes

Henderson's looping cross from the right was well controlled by Mane at the back post but he was off balance when taking the shot and it ballooned over the bar. Liverpool are still camped in Milan territory though, staying patient.

08:21 PM

65 minutes

Mane is on for the injured Origi. That means Jota will go central with Mane supporting him from an inside left position. The game has quietened down, relatively speaking, in the last few minutes. Milan starting to look more solid.

08:19 PM

62 minutes

Mane is about to replace Origi who has picked up a bit of a knock. Milan also making a double change: Leao and Saelemaekers replaced by Giroud and Florenzi. Looks like two up front for the remainder of the game with Giroud joining Rebic.

08:16 PM

59 minutes

Fabinho wins a big tackle in midfield but Milan defend well. Nice feet in midfield from Diaz and an attempted through ball to Rebic but Gomez cut it out. Alexander-Arnold picks up a narrow position outside the D but he ran into Hernandez. Brilliant tracking back from Salah to win the ball back.

08:13 PM

56 minutes

No Milan player could keep up with Rebic on the break who fed a ball across the penalty area. Olivier Giroud warming up and getting ready to come on. Keita drives into the box but his cross with the outside of his right foot is straight at Maignan.

08:11 PM

Salah's goal

08:11 PM

54 minutes

Liverpool have their tails up and Salah wins another corner. Milan are still chasing goals and are leaving space for Liverpool's attackers to exploit. Surely only a matter of time before Mane is introduced.

08:09 PM

52 minutes

Robertson's corner was a dangerous one but Alexander-Arnold's shot was always rising. This game has swung again, but can Liverpool put Milan to the sword in this strong spell after letting them off lightly in the first half?

08:07 PM

50 minutes

The perfect start to the half from Liverpool. Plenty questioned Origi's inclusion tonight, but that assist was another great Champions League moment for him.

Now Liverpool attack through Robertson but Origi could not quite trap his fizzed cross. Liverpool keep the move alive though and have a corner.

08:06 PM

GOOOOAAALLL! Liverpool level

Salah has the equaliser. Origi with a delicious scooped pass from the edge of the box into Salah's path and Maignan lacked the bravery to come out and smother, hanging back on his line. The easiest of finishes for Salah who makes it 2-2.

The Milan 'keeper did limp off at half time so maybe still feeling something.

08:05 PM

49 minutes

Liverpool come forward through Salah and Henderson but Tomori is down after blocking a ball in a delicate area. Good job it's a mild night.

08:03 PM

47 minutes

What a let off for Liverpool! They just about stepped up and played offside from a shot corner because Kjaer had tapped home the low cross and though he had Milan's third of the night.

08:02 PM

The players are back out

No changes from Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool just need to pick up their earlier performance levels. Milan have won a corner in the opening seconds of the half.

07:52 PM

Milan's second goal: Great play from Leao in the build up

07:48 PM

HT: Liverpool 1 Milan 2

A scarcely believable 45 minutes of football. That was vintage Liverpool for most of the half, peppering the Milan goal with shots and penning them in their half. After a minimal drop in tempo close to half time, the Italians produced two great moves to take the lead. Liverpool need to go again after the break. Oh and in between all that, Mohamed Salah missed a penalty.

07:46 PM

45 minutes

Just the one minute added on. Liverpool will be wondering how on earth they are losing this. Klopp does have some heavyweight options on their bench.

07:45 PM

GOOOOAAALLL! Milan have scored again

Where has this come from? It's another flowing Milan move involving Leao and Rebic keeps his head into the box to pull the back beyond Allison. Robertson gets half a block in but it squirms towards the goal-line for Diaz to score from a few yards out

07:44 PM

43 minutes

Liverpool will be kicking themselves that they did not score the second goal when they were battering Milan in the first 30 minutes.

07:43 PM

GOOOOAAALLL! Milan have grabbed an equaliser

There were a few signs of Liverpool tiredness, but that was a wonderfully worked goal from Milan. Saelemaekers finds space between the lines and lays the ball off to Leao who finds Rebic free in the box with a first time pass and he strokes the ball into the bottom corner.

07:41 PM

41 minutes

Milan starting to string more passes together and enjoy some possession higher up the pitch but Calabria's cross was too strong for his team-mates.

07:39 PM

39 minutes

Milan will be hoping the new ball is a better friend to them than the previous one. That was better from them, but Gomez cut out Diaz's through ball into the box and then Jota wins a free-kick in his own half.

07:38 PM

37 minutes

Milan venture forward through Diaz and Hernandez, but then the referee blows his whistle because the ball has gone flat. Much to the delight of one lucky Liverpool supporter, Klopp has thrown the faulty ball into the stands.

07:34 PM

35 minutes

Calabria tried to chest the ball back to Maignan, but the ball bounces off the goalkeeper's knee and behind for a corner. Milan are pinned back in their half again, a terrible clearance presents Alexander-Arnold with the chance to shoot but the strike is blocked. Then the right-back wins a foul in a dangerous spot wide right.

07:31 PM

32 minutes

Salah forces Maignan into another save with a fierce strike from the edge of the box. Liverpool responding to that glimmer of promise from Milan. Lovely pass from Henderson with the outside of his right foot to Robertson, and then Keita's shot is deflected behind for a corner. Maignan claims Salah's low cross and Milan survive again.

07:29 PM

30 minutes

Liverpool have done such a good job of closing down angles and stifling Milan on the rare occasions they enjoy some possession. They do get forward through Leao though, and he whips a decent ball to the back post. Milan maintain the attack and Gomez sticks out a leg to clear another delivery from Leao.

07:27 PM

27 minutes

Hernandez squeezes Alexander-Arnold out close to the corner flag and the Liverpool right-back concedes a foul. It gives Maignan the chance to punt the ball long and gain Milan some much-needed territory.

07:25 PM

24 minutes

Liverpool fans want a foul on Origi but the referee judges it was just strong defending from Tomori. Another pass gets away from a Milan man and Liverpool get to restart with a throw in. The pressure has been close to incessant. Alexander-Arnold concedes a free-kick on halfway with a late tackle.

07:22 PM

A fast Liverpool start

07:22 PM

21 minutes

Jota getting through plenty of defensive work, replacing what Liverpool have lost in Firmino. Milan are trying to play short from their own half but are not moving the ball quickly or accurately enough and are getting pressed off it. Keita penalised for a foul in the box.

07:19 PM

18 minutes

At least Milan have not conceded a chance in the last few minutes, but it is still difficult for them to construct attacks. Liverpool work the ball well to Salah who was holding his width on the right and Kessie toes the ball behind for a corner. On the second phase, Matip meets Alexander-Arnold's cross but heads straight at Maignan.

07:17 PM

Tonight's YNWA

07:16 PM

16 minutes

Despite that penalty miss this has been vintage Liverpool: 13 shots on goal in 15 minutes of football! So one-sided, it's like a third-round FA Cup tie against lower league opponents.

07:14 PM

SAVED BY MAIGNAN!

A great moment for the goalkeeper. Salah caught between two stools - looked like he decided at the last minute to blast it down the middle but it was not central enough. The 'keeper also kept out Jota's follow up header.

07:13 PM

PENALTY LIVERPOOL!

Robertson's shot deflected over the bar but Bennacer had extended his arm to block the strike with his elbow. Salah to take the penalty.

07:13 PM

13 minutes

Salah twisting and turning in the penalty area and Tomori produces a great block to stop his shot or else that could have been 2-0 and almost game over. Kjaer gets his head on the corner to clear, but Liverpool keep the ball alive.

07:11 PM

11 minutes

Liverpool bossing the game, and Henderson gets another shot on target from distance. Milan do finally get some touches in the attacking third but Matip defends really well in the one-on-one in the box. It starts another spell of Liverpool possession.

07:10 PM

GOOOOAAALLL! Liverpool have the goal their start deserves

They have exploded out of the traps tonight and now they have something to show for it thanks to Alexander-Arnold. Plays a one-two with Salah and runs off the winger Leao, drives into the penalty area and his strike from a tight angle is deflected over Maignan into the net. Liverpool one up.

07:08 PM

8 minutes

A moment of promise there for Milan but Rebic made his run a little too early and he was flagged offside. Salah looked like leading a Liverpool counter but his through ball strikes Tomori on the back of the heel. Origi pressed Hernandez into a mistake and Kjaer puts his cross behind for another corner.

Alexander-Arnold's delivery is a good one but Matip's header is caught by Maignan.

07:05 PM

6 minutes

All Liverpool so far, but Salah's cross is straight at the goalkeeper Maignan.

Then Liverpool carve out another chance! Robertson pounces on Kessie's chipped square pass and tees up Jota in the area, who sends a Milan defender the wrong way before his shot deflects wide. Milan hanging on.

07:04 PM

4 minutes

Jota drops into midfield to receive the ball in a pocket of space and start a Liverpool attack. He feeds Robertson on the overlap down the left and his low cross was fizzed into Origi's path just in front of the near post. He could not get enough on the side-foot attempt and it flew wide of the post. Really fluent move.

07:02 PM

2 minutes

A real crackle in the air at Anfield at the start of this one, and Liverpool are seeing most of the ball in the early exchanges. Milan pushed back in their own half. Kjaer blocked Keita's shot and then the left-back Hernandez heads behind for an early Liverpool corner. The Italians clear and then Matip's header loops into the arms of Maignan.

07:00 PM

KICK OFF!

Liverpool get us going and the home side are kicking into the Kop in the first half.

Klopp speaks about rotating the team

Gomez has trained nearly as long as Virgil. Trained outstanding. Joe and Joel [Matip] have played together before so know each other, which is very important.

We have a lot of games coming up. It's not exactly what Virgil [Van Dijk] wanted or what I wanted but we have to do it.

We have to use the squad, nothing to do with disrespecting AC Milan. And maybe surprise the opponent a bit, he's a different type of player up there [Divock Origi].

AC Milan's team and subs (in an annoying format)

Why can't they just write the names down in positional order?

Fear not, here is their team the old fashioned way: Maignan, Calabria, Kjaer, Tomori, Hernandez, Bennacer, Kessie, Saelemaekers, Diaz, Leao, Rebic.

05:54 PM

Klopp springs a surprise

Though maybe it should not be that surprising given Liverpool have the thinnest squad of the four title contenders and need to keep their key players fit. Van Dijk, Thiago and Mane are in reserve on the bench.

Divock Origi comes out of the cold to start up front, while Joe Gomez and Naby Keita have the chance to get some minutes in their legs. Two great talents who fit Liverpool's style perfectly, but had sadly spent too much time on the treatment table. Origi likes a Champions League goal of course, finding the net in the 2019 semi-final and final.

Two of European football's giants meet again in the Champions League

There will be a capacity Anfield crowd on a Champions League night for the first time since the last-16 defeat to Atletico Madrid in March 2020, which was one of the last major events staged before the coronavirus lockdown.

Liverpool will get their chance for revenge against Atletico later in the group stage but their opener is a fixture no less resonant as they face AC Milan in a repeat of the 2005 and 2007 finals. The events of the first final in Istanbul need little introduction - an improbable comeback from 3-0 down against a team of modern greats gave Liverpool fans the night of their lives. Tonight is the first time these two aristocrats of European football have played a competitive match other than a Champions League final.

In those previous meetings it was Liverpool who were punching up at a team with a recent history of European success, but it could be a case of roles reversed. Milan are making their first appearance in the Champions League proper since 2013-14 and are in the middle of an expansive rebuild. Liverpool were finalists in 2018 before going one better in 2019, and are one of the leading contenders for the crown this season along with the other three Premier League clubs, PSG and Bayern Munich.

Milan will be without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who turns 40 next month, due to injury which could mean Olivier Giroud leading the line. There are other Chelsea connections in the Milan squad with Fikayo Tomori impressing at centre-back and Tiémoué Bakayoko a midfield option. Former Manchester City and Arsenal youth players Brahim Diaz and Ismael Bennacer provide creativity and quality in attacking midfield. It's been a good start to the season domestically with nine points from nine in Serie A, scoring seven and conceding one.

Liverpool will of course be missing Harvey Elliott after his gruesome dislocated ankle at Leeds, while Roberto Firmino is expected to be absent again which will likely mean a front three of Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah.

Full team news on the way shortly.
