Liverpool vs AC Milan - LIVE

Liverpool brought an end to their time in Dubai with a 4-1 win over AC Milan, in what was their final match before the return of competitive footall. Arsenal had already wrapped up the Dubai Super Cup, but Liverpool ensured they finished the friendly tournament on a high as they deservedly beat the Serie A side with goals from Mohamed Salah and Thiago, and a late Darwin Nunez brace.

AC Milan won the penalty shootout that followed the match 4-3, with Kostas Tsimikas and Naby Keita seeing their spot-kicks saved as Liverpool lost their second shootout in the space of five days after Lyon also got the better of them.

Jurgen Klopp and his side now turn their focus to Manchester City, who they face in the Carabao Cup on December 22, before a Boxing Day trip to play Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Kalulu to win it for AC Milan.

Very calm run-up and a finish to match, Milan win the shootout!

GOAL! Liverpool 3-3 AC Milan

17:42 , Matt Verri

Nunez... scores!

What a mess! Strolls up, pretty much passes it straight at the goalkeeper who can’t believe how weak it is, and lets it through his hands. Trickles over the line.

GOAL! Liverpool 2-3 AC Milan

17:41 , Matt Verri

El Hilali makes no mistake, despite a slight slip.

Over to Nunez, he has to score.

GOAL! Liverpool 2-2 AC Milan

17:40 , Matt Verri

Clark up for Liverpool, they need this.

Brilliant penalty, perfectly finds the corner. We’re all level - Liverpool went first though, so still advantage Milan.

SAVE! Liverpool 1-2 AC Milan

17:40 , Matt Verri

Adrian saves this one!

Adli whips it at a good height for the goalkeeper, Liverpool still in it.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-2 AC Milan

17:39 , Matt Verri

Carvalho looking to get Liverpool on the board.

And does! Mirante sent the wrong way.

GOAL! Liverpool 0-2 AC Milan

17:38 , Matt Verri

Bakayoko next up for Milan.

Terrible penalty, but he’s scored! Somehow found a way through Adrian, despite having no pace on it at all.

SAVE! Liverpool 0-1 AC Milan

17:37 , Matt Verri

Keita for Liverpool.

Same corner that Tsimikas went for, and it’s the same result! Liverpool see their first two penalties saved.

GOAL! Liverpool 0-1 AC Milan

17:36 , Matt Verri

Bennacer up for AC Milan.

And he makes no mistake, fired into the corner as Adrian goes the wrong way. Great penalty.

SAVE! Liverpool 0-0 AC Milan

17:35 , Matt Verri

Here we go then. Tsimikas up first for Liverpool.

Saved! Guessed correctly and got there.

17:33 , Matt Verri

Adrian is now the Liverpool captain, after all those changes, so he’s up for the coin toss with Bennacer.

Would appear that Liverpool have won it and will go first.

FT: Liverpool 4-1 AC Milan

17:30 , Matt Verri

Doak nearly scores in the final seconds, what a cameo from the teenager.

There’s the final whistle, Liverpool cruise to victory. Time for some fun from the spot...

Bring on the shootout!

17:27 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Three minutes added on.

And then we got to penalties! Because why not...

GOAL! Liverpool 4-1 AC Milan | Darwin Nunez 88'

17:26 , Matt Verri

Two for Nunez!

Doak flies away down the right, squares it for Nunez and he just about converts a simple finish in the middle. Not great contact.

Replays would suggest it was offside too... Nunez won’t be too bothered about that.

17:24 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Liverpool pressing right up the pitch, young players on the pitch are looking to make an impression and have brought some more energy to the match.

Good win this for Liverpool, plenty to like about how they’ve played.

17:21 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Doak on for Salah, the Egyptian’s night is over.

He will not be involved in the penalty shootout - fair to say Klopp couldn’t really care less about that.

GOAL! Liverpool 3-1 AC Milan | Darwin Nunez 82'

17:18 , Matt Verri

That seals it!

Clark with a great pass through to Nunez, only the goalkeeper to beat and he slides it past Mirante - so composed.

17:16 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Reminder that whatever happens in the final ten minutes or so, there will be a penalty shootout on offer.

An extra point will go to the winner of that, not that it makes any difference to anything. But it’s fun.

17:12 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Space opens up for Nunez, three up with him but not a chance he’s passing.

Curling effort with his left foot, Mirante tips it over the bar. Should really have caught that, looked more difficult to palm it away.

Corner comes to nothing for Liverpool.

17:11 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Keita and Nunez very nearly combine, just breaks down at the wrong moment though.

Liverpool still controlling the match, but they’ve looked vulnerable on the rare occasions that Milan have ran at them. Backed off too much.

17:07 , Matt Verri

70 mins: OFF THE BAR!

Brilliant effort from El Hilali. Cuts inside onto his right foot, curls a shot at goal and it smacks off the woodwork.

That will be a timely water break for Liverpool.

17:04 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Chaos in the Milan box, Carvalho with the effort and Mirante can’t keep hold of it. Denies Salah from close range, but Liverpool stay on the attack.

Bajcetic then tries his luck from miles out... miles over.

17:03 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Phillips on for Liverpool now as well, Matip gets a bit of a rest.

Salah still on for the Reds... surely Klopp brings him off soon? Can’t be risking anything happening to him.

16:59 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Decent strike from Nunez, immediately involved. Shifts it onto his right foot but it’s straight at the goalkeeper.

It’s rarely boring when he’s involved, one way or another!

16:57 , Matt Verri

61 mins: Six changes from Klopp. Brace yourselves.

Adrian, Tsimikas, Keita, Carvalho, Frauendorf and Nunez all on. Kelleher, Robertson, Milner, Thiago, Firmino and Oxlade-Chamberlain replaced.

16:53 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Corner swung in from Milan, flicked on at the near post but fortunately for Liverpool it’s straight at Kelleher.

Went through a lot of shirts there, lucky it didn’t take a deflection and leave the goalkeeper stranded.

16:50 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Elliott, Salah, Firmino... there ends the fun.

Was a nice flowing move up to that point, Gomez doing well in the build-up coming out of defence. Milan getting plenty of bodies back behind the ball.

16:47 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Milner has had an impressive game at right-back. He knocks it past Rebic, gets a firm shove for his troubles.

Elliott the latest Liverpool player to be fouled, too quick in the middle of the park and he gets his heels clipped.

16:45 , Matt Verri

48 mins: No changes at the break from Liverpool. Bennacer and Vranckx on for Milan.

The Serie A side continue to be sloppy in possession, Liverpool have been much the sharper of the two sides in possession.

Back underway!

16:42 , Matt Verri

Up and running once again in Dubai!

Reminder of the Liverpool bench...

16:36 , Matt Verri

Subs: Adrian, Davies, Keita, Tsimikas, Nunez, Carvalho, Clark, Phillips, Doak, Cain, Quansah, Corness, Chambers, Frauendorf

Not many Milan fans in...

HT: Liverpool 2-1 AC Milan

16:25 , Matt Verri

Whistle goes just as Salah was away on the counter. Huge smile on his face... it is a friendly after all.

Liverpool leads through goals from the Egyptian and Thiago, with Saelemaekers scoring in between those.

Entertaining first 45 minutes in Dubai.

16:22 , Matt Verri

45+3 mins: Pace of the match has slowed right down, both teams ready for half-time.

Mixed bag for Liverpool, plenty of encouraging signs but they’ve also look shaky at the back on a few occasions.

16:19 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Rebic through to Lazetic, weak effort as he loses his balance and Kelleher saves that with minimal fuss.

Five minutes added on - World Cup fever has evidently reached Dubai.

16:16 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Milan win a corner, as they look for an immediate response.

Barely reaches the first man, let alone beat him. Awful corner and it’s hammered away by Robertson.

GOAL! Liverpool 2-1 AC Milan | Thiago 41'

16:15 , Matt Verri

Liverpool back in front!

Cross swung in, headed out to Thiago on the edge of the box who needs one touch to control it, and another to drill it into the bottom corner. Caught that so sweetly.

16:12 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Elliott wide to Milner on the overlap, he gets to the byline and drills a low cross into the box.

Goalkeeper spills it, Robertson is there looking to poke it away but instead it’s a very, very fortunate free-kick for Mirante.

16:09 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Milner with a deep cross, Robertson nods it into the six-yard box.

Oxlade-Chamberlain wins the header, but can only send it straight at a very grateful Mirante.

16:06 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Liverpool a bit rattled after the goal, struggling to keep hold of the ball.

They took an early lead against Lyon on Sunday before falling to defeat - won’t want that to become a pattern.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-1 AC Milan | Alexis Saelemaekers 29'

16:03 , Matt Verri

Rebic with a brilliant pass out wide, Robertson can’t intercept it.

Saelemaekers drives inside, into the box on his left foot and fires a low strike into the far corner. Wonderful goal!

16:00 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Thiago the latest to try his luck, effort is dragged just wide.

And that will be a water break - Milan very grateful for that, they’ve been under so much pressure in the last 15 minutes or so.

15:57 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Great position for a free-kick, as Milner is brought down. Angle is ideal for a left-footer.

No surprise that it’s Salah then stepping up, but he smacks it straight into the wall. Not the best.

15:54 , Matt Verri

20 mins: This time it’s Salah finding Oxalde-Chamberlain, drives into space 20 yards out and lets fly. Well wide.

Milner had made a brilliant run to his right and was completely free - safe to say he was not particularly delighted with his team-mate’s decision to shoot.

15:52 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Long ball over the top towards Rebic, it’s aimless though and Kelleher can stroll off his line to claim.

Frustraing match so far for Milan. One big chance that they wasted, absolutely nothing for them since then.

15:48 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Milan give it away, Liverpool can pounce.

Oxlade-Chamberlain with a lovely flick to lay it off for Salah, looks to bend it low into the bottom corner but it’s a really tame effort. Comfortable save.

15:47 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Saelemaekers looks to have been taken out in midfield by Thiago, referee waves play on that. Very generous decision.

Liverpool straight on the counter, Salah threatens to run straight through the middle but the door is swiftly slammed shut.

15:45 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Oxalde-Chamberlain a bit too keen to press there, gives away a cheap free-kick.

Gomez shows really good speed to track back out wide, just as it looked like a Milan cross might be coming in.

15:41 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Really sharp from Liverpool since that Milan chance, Serie A side haven’t got out of their own half.

Milner with a good run down the right, Robertson keeping the width on the left. Full-backs both strongly involved so far.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 AC Milan | Mohamed Salah 5'

15:39 , Matt Verri

LOVELY GOAL!

Matip with the driving run forward, combines really nicely on the edge of the box and Salah just rolls the ball into the bottom corner.

15:36 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Big chance for Milan!

Lazetic played clean through on goal, massive gap in the middle of the Liverpool defence between Gomez and Matip. The striker drags the effort wide though, had to score really.

KICK-OFF!

15:34 , Matt Verri

We’re up and running in Dubai!

Not long now....

15:31 , Matt Verri

Players will be out any second in Dubai.

Relaxed atmosphere ahead of kick-off as you’d expect, but both sides will want to impress this afternoon.

Pre-match thoughts from Klopp!

15:24 , Matt Verri

15:21 , Matt Verri

So we have both the lineups... took long enough.

Origi reportedly misses out with a muscle strain, so he is not involved against his former side.

Kick-off coming up in less than ten minutes now!

At last!

Nat Phillips on Dubai camp

15:09 , Matt Verri

“It’s been good. Obviously it has been intense, we want to get up to speed quickly, so we’ve been putting the work in.

“It has been nice to be back, you start to miss it after a few weeks so it’s been nice to be back with the ball at our feet and seeing the boys again.

“It’s definitely been unusual [because of the World Cup break], but I did one of these when I was in Germany so I have an experience of it myself. You adapt pretty quickly - you just turn up and put the work in!”

Hugs all round!

Serie A legend Mihajlovic dies

14:52 , Matt Verri

Sinisa Mihajlovic, the accomplished former Serbian footballer and manager who spent the majority of his career in Italy, has died at the age of 53 following a long battle with leukemia.

Mihajlovic’s passing was first reported by Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, leading to an outpouring of grief from across the football world - not least the country where he became a household name as a player and free-kick specialist during spells with Roma, Sampdoria, Lazio and Inter Milan in the 1990s and early 2000s.

He later managed the likes of AC Milan, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, Torino and Bologna, where he had worked as recently as September before departing after a difficult start to the 2022/23 season.

All quiet on the Milan front

14:45 , Matt Verri

No word yet on the AC Milan side, which is... helpful.

They’ve got some shirts up in their dressing room, so we’ll assume they do intend to actually name a side at some point.

Plenty of experience in Liverpool side

14:38 , Matt Verri

Strong side as expected from Klopp, with Salah and Firmino both starting up front. Oxlade-Chamberlain gets his chance too, with Nunez on the bench.

It’s Milner at right-back, with Gomez and Matip again the centre-back pairing. Bajcetic will be keen to impress in midfield, while Elliott is fit to start despite picking up a knock against Lyon.

Plenty of youngsters on the bench who will be hoping to get an opportunity at some point this afternoon.

Familiar with each other!

14:16 , Matt Verri

These two sides met last season in the Champions League group stage, with Liverpool winning both matches.

The Reds won 3-2 at home, before backing it up with a 2-1 win at the San Siro. We’d take a similar amount of goals this afternoon!

Before that, there was a 2-1 win for Milan in the 2007 Champions League final. And then apparently they also met in 2005 and it was quite fun...

Coming up next

13:58 , Matt Verri

The World Cup doesn’t finish for another couple of days, but club football returns next week.

Liverpool are less than a week away now from making their return to competitive action, facing Manchester City away from home in the Carabao Cup on Thursday. Nice easy match back...

It’s then a trip to Villa Park on Boxing Day in the Premier League for Jurgen Klopp’s size.

Liverpool took the lead inside in a minute in their opening Dubai Super Cup match against Lyon.

Fabio Carvalho got the goal, but the Ligue 1 side came from behind to 3-1 with. Alexandre Lacazette scored a brace in the match, before Lyon then won the penalty shootout that followed.

Klopp named a relatively strong side on Sunday, and it can be expected to be even stronger this afternoon.

Robertson: Diaz injury devastating

13:42 , Matt Verri

Luis Diaz has suffered a significant injury setback and is expected to be out for around three months, being forced to undergo surgery having just returned to training.

The Colombian had seemingly recovered from the knee injury that has kept him out since October, but began to feel discomfort and it has proved to be a serious issue. Andy Robertson has admitted it was a “devastating” blow.

“He went from one extreme to the next,” Robertson said. “First, it was the excitement of having him back in training and having him back probably ahead of schedule and things like that.

“And Luis is such a happy person around the place and such a great character, so for him to get this kind of knock in training and then to find out how long it’s likely to be for is devastating for him.

“We’ll all be there for him, we’ll all help him get through it and he’s obviously got a couple of months ahead of him to try and recover.”

Elliott: Massive game for Liverpool

13:30 , Matt Verri

Harvey Elliott insists Liverpool will be taking this afternoon’s match seriously, with it more than just a mid-season friendly.

“For us, it’s a massive game,” Elliott told the club’s official website.

“I think it’s the last game before City, so the players are going to need to get the most out of it. And maybe for the coaching staff, I don’t know, try things or stick to the basics and make sure we apply it to the best of our ability.

“It’s just enjoyable getting to play against another world-class team in AC Milan, who have won so much, and it’s going to be a tough opponent for us again. Hopefully it can put us on a good path for City and a good building point for the next week or so for the City game.”

Prediction

13:23 , Matt Verri

A disappointing defeat for both sides in the start of their Dubai Super Cup campaign will at least push them towards fuller fitness, with the Reds likely to come out on top.

A 2-0 Liverpool win.

Liverpool team news

13:15 , Matt Verri

Luis Diaz will continue to be absent for Liverpool after a crucial setback in his return from a knee injury.

Arthur Melo and Diogo Jota are long-term absentees while Harvey Elliott is a doubt after picking up a knock against Lyon.

The likes of Alisson Becker, Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all on holiday after reaching the World Cup quarter-finals, meanwhile.

Predicted Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Kelleher; Ramsay, Matip, Gomez, Tsimikas; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Thiago, Milner; Salah, Nunez, Carvalho.
