Liverpool vs Brentford LIVE!

Liverpool are celebrating moving up to second place in the Premier League table heading into the November international break. The title-chasing Reds rebounded in style from a tough week that included a poor draw at Luton and a shock Europa League loss in Toulouse to brush aside Brentford on Sunday in yet another emphatic home win at fortress Anfield.

Mohamed Salah's double either side of half-time took the in-form Egyptian up to 200 goals in English football, with Diogo Jota making sure of all three points with a brilliant arrowed effort from the edge of the box late on. Darwin Nunez had earlier seen two goals in quick succession correctly ruled out for offside.

Jurgen Klopp's side leapfrog both Tottenham and Arsenal in the standings, while the Bees remain in mid-table with their impressive three-match winning run under Thomas Frank now at an end. Follow Liverpool vs Brentford reaction live below, with insight and analysis from Standard Sport's Dom Smith at Anfield!

They stay 10th for now.

The Brazilian does not want to relinquish this clean sheet as he parries Pinnock's powerful header over the top.

Van Dijk also with a crucial clearance to stop Maupay from guiding home Norgaard's flick from close range.

Maupay then misses a chance to end a period of sustained Brentford pressure.

Liverpool home and dry as they score a third.

The first real moment of quality of the day from Diogo Jota.

A second assist of the afternoon for Tsimikas, too.

Brentford were feeding off scraps in the first half here, and it’s been even bleaker after the interval, to be honest.

GOAL! Liverpool 3-0 Brentford | Diogo Jota 73'

15:37 , George Flood

73 mins: A fine goal from Jota to surely seal all three points for Liverpool!

The Portuguese receives the ball from Tsimikas, eases past Onyeka with some fast feet and then arrows into the back of the net from the edge of the nox.

Brilliant. And Liverpool are easing to another very comfortable win at fortress Anfield.

Liverpool 2-0 Brentford

15:36 , George Flood

72 mins: Brentford make a triple change with less than 20 minutes to play.

Liverpool 2-0 Brentford

15:33 , George Flood

You feel there are more goals to come in this, with movement on the Liverpool bench.

Liverpool 2-0 Brentford

15:33 , George Flood

66 mins: Brentford have a mountain to climb now but aren't giving up, the unmarked Norgaard connecting with a corner from the left but Wissa unable to turn the ball home at the back post.

Liverpool 2-0 Brentford

15:31 , George Flood

Standard Sport's Dom Smith at Anfield

Well, that was a strange goal.

Salah nodded in, Flekken didn’t move, and then everyone seemed to look around at each other to see if it had been chalked off.

VAR checked that the ball was in play from Tsimikas' cross — it was — and then the goal was awarded.

Killer for the Bees, who were just coming into it.

GOAL! Liverpool 2-0 Brentford | Mohamed Salah 62'

15:27 , George Flood

62 mins: Liverpool have the all-important second goal!

And it's a 200th in English football for Salah - 198 for Liverpool and two for Chelsea.

Jota releases Tsimikas, who does so well to hook in that cross on the slide and just stop the ball from going out of play.

Brentford's defence all stop with their arms in the air, leaving Salah unmarked to head beyond Flekken.

The goal stands after a VAR check to see if the ball was kept in.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

15:25 , George Flood

61 mins: Just past the hour mark and Liverpool are under the cosh just at the moment.

Matip makes a sliding block to repel Norgaard's shot inside the box before Wissa heads wide at the front post.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

15:24 , George Flood

60 mins: Szoboszlai is caught out too easily by Wissa and Mbeumo races into the box, but he's denied by some superbly attentive and composed defending from Van Dijk.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

15:21 , George Flood

56 mins: VAR Stuart Attwell rules there was no serious foul play there from Endo.

His studs were up and made contact with the sliding Norgaard's leg, but a red card in the circumstances would have been very harsh.

Tierney didn't even deem it worthy of a yellow.

Frank wags his finger angrily on the touchline.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

15:19 , George Flood

55 mins: Endo could be in trouble here after a lunging challenge on Brentford captain Norgaard that took place right in front of the referee.

Tierney lets play go on, but VAR will check this for a possible red card for serious foul play.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

15:18 , George Flood

53 mins: Liverpool will be desperate to get that second goal as quickly as possible to try and kill off this game.

Tsimikas drives forward before firing over, before Gakpo also shoots off target.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

15:14 , George Flood

48 mins: Alisson is clattered by Mbeumo as the Cameroon forward tries to connect with a looping cross from the right.

Matip then hurts himself as he foolishly brings down the dangerous Mbeumo just outside the Liverpool box.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

Back underway at Anfield!

Thomas Frank has made one half-time change, with Janelt replaced by Frank Onyeka.

As you were for Liverpool.

Sensational Salah

15:05 , George Flood

Per Opta Sports, Salah is the first player in history to score in each of Liverpool's first six home league games of a season.

They also point out that he has been directly involved in 118 goals in 117 appearances for Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League (86 goals, 32 assists).

All seven assists from Nunez in the Premier League have come for Salah, per Opta...

Standard Sport's Dom Smith at Anfield

A first half that Liverpool have totally dominated comes to an end.

Two disallowed goals and a blizzard of shots have rained in on Flekken’s goal, but it’s only 1-0, with Salah scoring from a tight angle.

Brentford very much in the contest, but they need to keep the ball better in the second half here at Anfield.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

Half-time

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

14:54 , George Flood

51 mins: Collins with a last-ditch sliding, stretching challenge to thwart Nunez as he raced towards goal.

He had to get that right and did, though Liverpool fans are baying for a foul and a red card.

Brentford muster another chance before half-time, but that was never troubling Alisson by Roerslev.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

14:52 , George Flood

50 mins: Brentford cannot clear their lines under big pressure at the end of this first half and a whipped cross from Alexander-Arnold to the back post is side-footed well over the top by Salah.

A rare loss of composure by the Egyptian, who should have doubled his tally there and had Liverpool on easy street at the break.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

14:50 , George Flood

48 mins: Another useful counter from Brentford there but the ball just doesn't fall for Jensen inside the box.

At the other end, Nunez lets fly with a vicious attempt that is too hot for Flekken to hold.

Smart defending from Roerslev to chest it back to his goalkeeper under pressure from Gakpo.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

14:48 , George Flood

45 mins: Six minutes of added time have been signalled at Anfield at the end of this lively first half.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

14:46 , George Flood

43 mins: Brentford are living dangerously here now and cannot afford to concede again before half-time.

Flekken gratefully claims a looping cross into the six-yard box.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

Standard Sport's Dom Smith at Anfield

Excellent goal from Liverpool, scored by their man in form Salah.

But from a Brentford perspective, it’s a poor one to concede.

Wissa should not have been dispossessed so easily by Van Dijk.

From there, it was a quick move and Salah thumped home.

Just before the break is an ideal time to finally score one that counts, as far as Liverpool are concerned.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Brentford | Mohamed Salah 39'

14:41 , George Flood

39 mins: Liverpool break the deadlock before half-time!

It's a fine ball from Alexander-Arnold into the feet of Nunez, who cleverly steers it for Salah to take a touch and finish cooly into the bottom corner.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:41 , George Flood

37 mins: Liverpool fans want Norgaard sent off here for his reaction following a tussle with Matip.

The fans berate referee Tierney and then watch as Nunez releases Tsimikas to the byline with a fine through ball, though his own cross is desperately hacked away.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:38 , George Flood

Standard Sport's Dom Smith at Anfield

Thomas Frank was left with his head in his hands after Mbeumo squandered that one-on-one.

Outstanding ball from Jensen over the top, and a big, big chance for the visitors to score the game’s third goal — and the first that would have counted. He’ll rue not hitting his shot harder, Mbeumo.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:37 , George Flood

32 mins: This is an absorbing first half being played at a rip-roaring pace.

Brentford deal with a dangerous free-kick to the front post and then break with one ball over the top that releases Mbeumo, with Alisson coming out to make a huge save.

Where was Alexander-Arnold there?!

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:34 , George Flood

29 mins: Brentford are struggling now as Norgaard and Ajer both go into the book.

Both with fouls on Jota, with referee Paul Tierney's decision to pull up play and prevent a Liverpool counter drawing a frustrated response from the home crowd.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:31 , George Flood

27 mins: GOOOOA... NO!

Roerslev steers a back-post cross intended for Salah behind and Flekken then makes a terrific low stop to repel Van Dijk's header from the resulting corner.

Matip manages to keep it alive and the ball is hooked in acrobatically by Nunez, but again the offside flag curtails his celebrations.

VAR concurs. Two goals now chalked off in quick succession for the Uruguayan.

Some concern for Ben Mee here, who fell onto the turf amid an aerial duel and Pinnock landed on top of him.

Looks to be his shoulder. He’s back up now and getting treatment by the side of the pitch.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:28 , George Flood

25 mins: Concern here for Mee as he stays down after a heavy fall.

Thankfully he's back up on his feet now.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:26 , George Flood

22 mins: GOOOOA... NO!

Nunez fires in off the post from close range after Szoboszlai's effort falls into his path.

This will be checked for offside and a potential foul by Tsimikas on Jensen in the build-up.

The flag was up for offside actually.

God that's tight, but offside it is after a VAR check.

0-0 it remains.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

Darwin Nunez having a big influence on the opening exchanges of this match.

Flekken denies his tight-angle shot from an attack which the Uruguayan himself began in the middle of the park.

Nunez is playing as a striker but dropping into midfield to collect from his team-mates well.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:22 , George Flood

20 mins: That's another gorgeous Brentford pass to try and set Wissa away.

Liverpool look in danger at the back again, but a difficult first touch allows Alexander-Arnold the chance to get back and make an important challenge.

Klopp won't be thrilled with what he's seeing defensively so far today - and not for the first time this week.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:21 , George Flood

18 mins: Brentford look dangerous on the counter-attack here and Alexander-Arnold almost pays for a shocking attempted pass to Van Dijk inside the box.

Luckily for him, Mbeumo lashes the loose ball high and wide.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:20 , George Flood

16 mins: Nunez with a lovely little give and go with Salah inside the box, but he's just falling as he tries to shoot at the near post and Flekken can shovel behind.

Jota and Janelt are all over each other at these set-pieces - this time the decision goes against the Liverpool forward.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:16 , George Flood

14 mins: Now Pinnock blocks from Jota as the Portuguese tries to let fly from inside the box.

Liverpool are camped in that Brentford final third just at the moment.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:15 , George Flood

12 mins: Another Liverpool cross from the right is turned behind by Pinnock.

Jota can't connect with the corner and stays down in the box after a spot of wrestling, with VAR looking at it.

No penalty though as Van Dijk does very well indeed to win a Liverpool throw-in.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:12 , George Flood

10 mins: Liverpool could easily be behind here, but they are piling on the pressure otherwise - with Alexander-Arnold the conductor in chief as he tries to release those forward players.

Flekken alert to the danger so far.

Now a looping Salah cross catches in the considerable wind and lands on the roof of the net.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:10 , George Flood

8 mins: A good game so far this as Liverpool come roaring back, Tsimikas releasing Nunez down the left and the Uruguayan's dangerous cross deflected by Ajer and palmed behind at the front post by Flekken.

Gakpo then can't connect with Alexander-Arnold's searching ball to the back post.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:09 , George Flood

6 mins: Wow!

A diagonal free-kick from Flekken is pumped to the edge of the Liverpool box, where Pinnock rises with the flick-on towards Mee.

It's complete panic stations in the Liverpool defence but Norgaard, Pinnock and I think Janelt can't find the finishing touch.

That could so easily have been 1-0 to Brentford.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:06 , George Flood

Standard Sport's Dom Smith at Anfield

Well held by Flekken as Gakpo fires on goal within the first four minutes.

Liverpool have made a good start and Brentford are allowing them just a split second too long on the ball in midfield.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:06 , George Flood

4 mins: Gakpo links up brilliantly with Szoboszlai before rifling a powerful effort on goal to test the reflexes of Flekken, who is equal to it.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

14:05 , George Flood

2 mins: A positive start from Liverpool as they dominate possession early on, with Tsimikas and Salah testing Brentford's back five with a couple of balls into the box.

Mee repels the latter's delivery intended for Szoboszlai.

A little surprising to see Neal Maupay not starting after ending his long goal drought in last weekend’s 3-2 win over West Ham, but Brentford are clearly shifting to a back five to provide better defensive solidity against a Liverpool side who could move above Tottenham and go third with a win here.

Mee and Roerslev drafted in by Brentford

13:26 , George Flood

Mark Flekken is fit to start in goal for Brentford as expected.

Thomas Frank understandably opts for a more defensive approach as Ben Mee and Mads Roerslev both come in.

They replace Frank Onyeka and Neal Maupay, with the fit-again duo of Shandon Baptiste and Myles Peart-Harris both on the bench.

Van Dijk returns for Liverpool but no Konate

13:17 , George Flood

Van Dijk does return for Liverpool as expected, but Ibrahima Konate misses out entirely in a surprise as Joel Matip partners the captain in central defence.

With no Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch or Curtis Jones, Klopp opts for Cody Gakpo in a midfield role in what is a very attacking Reds lineup.

Otherwise it's pretty much as expected, with Liverpool's big hitters returning after the Toulouse loss. No Joe Gomez in the squad though.

It's also an extremely youthful bench, with Luis Diaz and Caoimhin Kelleher the only players over the age of 20.

16-year-old Trey Nyoni is a very highly-rated prospect signed from Leicester in September.

Frank: Brentford will try to take game to 'unbelievable' Liverpool

12:40 , George Flood

Brentford boss Thomas Frank is braced for what he believes could be the most difficult test that the Premier League has to offer this afternoon.

However, he insists that the confident Bees will still try to take the game to Liverpool, who have won all of their five home league games so far this season with an aggregate score of 14-2.

"For five years, Liverpool have been one of the top teams not just in the Premier League, but the world," Frank said at his pre-match press conference.

"They have a fantastic coach and staff, with great players.

"They have new energy in their squad with some of their new signings - (Dominik) Szoboszlai is a fantastic player.

 (AP)
(AP)

"(Darwin) Nunez is getting closer to his top, and (Diogo) Jota is a top player. (Luis) Diaz - I'm pleased to hear his parents are now safe - is a fantastic player, and then you have the standout guy, 25 plus goals, (Mohamed) Salah.

"It is an unbelievable team at Anfield - one of the most difficult away grounds to go to, if not the most difficult.

"It will be a tough test, but as always, we trust ourselves. We will try to take the game to Liverpool."

Klopp praises Brentford reaction to 'brutal' Toney loss

12:17 , George Flood

Though Brentford have not won at Anfield since the 1930s, they have caused Liverpool problems in the recent past and deservedly beat them 3-1 in west London back in January.

And Jurgen Klopp is evidently impressed with what he has seen from the resurgent Bees, particularly in the absence of striking talisman Ivan Toney.

"Super-challenging to play Thomas Frank and Brentford for different reasons. I'm not sure they are 100 per cent happy with the season but losing Ivan Toney and the player he was for them is really brutal," he said.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

"But they are mid-table, which is probably what Brentford wants getting through this situation and when he is coming back, using him again.

"They are well-organised, sensational at set-pieces and have really offensive players and really fast counter-attacking.

"It is always interesting and difficult as well. But it is Anfield and we should use that."

Fit-again Flekken hoping to kick-start Brentford career

12:03 , George Flood

There is no denying that Mark Flekken has endured a testing start to life in the Premier League, writes Standard Sport's Dom Smith.

After being replaced at half-time with a dead leg against West Ham last weekend, the Brentford goalkeeper is fit to start against Liverpool at Anfield.

The Dutchman is keen to click into top form at the club he joined from Freiburg for £11million in May.

David Raya's shoes have been big ones to fill, and Flekken has had an inconsistent start.

Klopp: Liverpool moving in right direction but not there yet

11:53 , George Flood

Jurgen Klopp gave an honest assessment of his Liverpool side after the draw at Luton - in which they needed an emotional last-gasp equaliser from Luis Diaz - and shock loss in Toulouse offered something of a reality check after four straight wins across all competitions.

Klopp views those results as a learning curve, insisting the Reds are on the correct path but still not where they need to be just yet.

"Things are going in the right direction but we are not there yet. We are not as stable as I wish but that's normal as well," he said at his pre-Brentford press conference on Friday.

"Generally we are in a positive situation and it is important to learn to deal with that. There has been a lot of praise.

"It really feels like this (Toulouse) and Luton is a real learning curve. I wish it would not be necessary, to be honest. I wish we would learn it quickly.

 (AFP via Getty Images)
(AFP via Getty Images)

"We can be a really good team. We have shown that. We cannot have what happened (in Toulouse): we were not aggressive enough. It was as easy as that.

"We can lose a game but we have to use it to learn the right things. To win a football game, you need to be aggressive."

Brentford have first-choice goalkeeper Mark Flekken available at Anfield after he was substituted at half-time of the 3-2 win over West Ham last weekend with a dead leg.

It's otherwise a lengthy absentee list for the in-form Bees, who are also now without Scottish full-back Aaron Hickey until the New Year with a hamstring injury.

He joins Rico Henry, Kevin Schade and the banned Ivan Toney on the sidelines, with Mikkel Damsgaard, Keane Lewis-Potter and Josh Dasilva all closing in on returns but unlikely to feature today.

Shandon Baptiste, meanwhile, has been building up his match fitness with Neil MacFarlane's B team after another injury nightmare.

Liverpool should be boosted by the return of captain Virgil van Dijk today after he missed the 3-2 Europa League loss in Toulouse through illness.

Andy Robertson, Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones and Stefan Bajcetic are all still sidelined through injury, while Ryan Gravenberch is also expected to miss out again with a knee issue.

Liverpool and Brentford collide at Anfield today in what could be a very entertaining Premier League battle on Merseyside.

The Reds have long since been a truly formidable proposition on home turf and will be itching to enter the latest international break - immediately after which they face a trip to leaders Manchester City - with some restored momentum after seeing a last-gasp, emotional draw at Luton followed by a shock and controversial Europa League loss in Toulouse on Thursday.

However, they are unlikely to have everything their own way against a Brentford side that have not won at this famous old ground since all the way back in 1937 but travel to the north-west today full of confidence with last weekend's comeback win over West Ham making it three wins on the bounce.

Kick-off this afternoon is at 2pm GMT, so stay tuned for live game updates after all the latest team news, match build-up and more, plus insight and analysis across the afternoon from Standard Sport's Dom Smith at Anfield.
