Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai was instrumental in getting help for his Hungarian teammate Barnabas Varga, who obtained serious injuries after a clash with Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn during their final Euro 2024 group stage clash on Sunday night.

Varga seemed to be hit unintentionally by Gunn's arm during a challenge for a ball resulting from a Szoboszlai free-kick around midway of the second half.

The Ferencvarosi TC forward player Varga then lay immobile on the ground as a reaction to being struck, while his team members called earnestly for medical aid.

Medical staff brought along a stretcher from the sidelines after some delay, which upset the Hungarian players. This prompted Szoboszlai to intervene and hurry them up by pulling the gurney himself towards Varga.

A visibly upset Szoboszlai had tears streaming down his face when screens were set-up around Varga during his treatment before being rushed off to a local hospital, reports the Mirror.

After the game concluded, Hungary's manager Marco Rossi stated that Vargas had facial fractures and a concussion, however, he was "healthy" barring these issues. Rossi expressed that his players were annoyed at the seeming lack of urgency shown by the medical staff to this serious situation.

"What I heard from the players is that Barney looked unconscious. Everybody was really worried about his condition, and worried that the doctors arrived a bit late. Probably they didn't realise it was a dangerous situation.

"We can say now that Barney is not under any kind of risks. Probably he will be operated on in the coming hours because he suffered a fracture here [points to cheek], but he's healthy. Of course if we will go through the competition he will not be any more part of the team."

Man of the match Ronald Sallai, who assisted Kevin Csoboth for the 100th-minute winner which knocked Scotland out and kept Hungary in with a chance of qualification, said: "It was a terrible moment to see him like that."

"He'll have to go tough a minor operation, but we cross our fingers for him that he can return. Naturally it was a terrible incident. Of course we were fighting for him in the remaining minutes and this win is dedicated to him."

Following the win, Szoboszlai led his teammates in dedicating the victory to Varga, as the Liverpool star put on the forward's shirt for the celebrations.
