Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai has levelled criticism at UEFA's medical staff for their delayed response to Barnabas Varga's alarming injury during the clash with Scotland.

Varga was inadvertently struck by goalkeeper Angus Gunn's arm while vying for a Szoboszlai freekick in the second half of the Group A encounter in Stuttgart. The Ferencvaros striker was knocked unconscious from the impact, and it was later revealed that he had sustained facial fractures.

Anfield ace Szoboszlai was seen hastening the medics with the stretcher onto the pitch, signalling the urgency of the situation to reach Varga faster.

Post-match, following Hungary's 1-0 victory, Szoboszlai expressed his concern: "He needs some surgery on his face and his nose. I think he's going to have the surgery tomorrow (Monday). It looked bad, it was bad, he felt bad.

"I don't really know the [medical] protocol or how it works but if our doctors say we need someone immediately to help, then I don't think they should walk. "It's not my decision, but I think we need to change something.

Even if somebody is on the ground, and you see that it was a big [collision], then just go on [the pitch]. Even if the referee is saying don't go on. Just go on. And if you see it's nothing serious, then you can just go down and it's finished. Seconds can help a lot."

Marco Rossi, the manager of Hungary, also acknowledged that his team was frustrated with how long it took for the medical team to attend to Varga.

"What I heard from the players is that Barney looked unconscious," Rossi commented, adding: "Everybody was really worried about his condition, and worried that the doctors arrived a bit late. Probably they didn’t realise it was a dangerous situation.

Looking ahead, he confirmed: "We can say now that Barney is not under any kind of risks. Probably he will be operated on in the coming hours because he suffered a fracture here [points to cheek], but he’s healthy. Of course if we will go through the competition he will not be any more part of the team."

In a poignant moment after the match, Szoboszlai was spotted donning Varga's shirt as Hungary celebrated their 1-0 win, courtesy of Kevin Csoboth's goal in the 10th minute of added time. This pivotal strike extinguished Scotland's hopes while ensuring Hungary stayed in the game.
