Two of Carlisle United’s young loanees were involved as Workington Reds fell to defeat on Easter Monday.

Jake Allan started while Sam Hetherington came off the bench in the second half against Atherton Collieries.

Manager Danny Grainger switched the duo - who had been sub and starter respectively in the previous defeat to Stafford Rangers - for the clash at Borough Park.

Blues youth team midfielder Allan forced a save from the Atherton keeper late in the first half with Reds trailing 1-0.

He was then replaced by fellow teenager Hetherington in the 53rd minute in west Cumbria.

But Reds went on to concede two more before a late rally, featuring goals by Steven Rigg and keeper Jim Atkinson, pulled it back to 3-2, Grainger’s side ultimately suffering a fourth straight defeat in Northern Premier League Premier Division.

Allan and Hetherington were the only United loanees to play on Easter Monday with Max Kilsby and Kai Nugent not in action.

Their next games in Scottish League One come on Saturday, with Kilsby’s Queen of the South at home to Kelty Hearts and Nugent’s Annan Athletic at home to Hamilton Academical.

A number of ex-Blues were in the thick of the Easter Monday action, meanwhile.

In the Championship, a Nakhi Wells goal was enough to earn Bristol City a 1-0 win at Plymouth Argyle.

And Charlie Wyke’s first goal for Rotherham United proved a late winner in their 2-1 victory over Millwall.

In League Two, Adam Campbell grabbed an injury-time goal to rubber-stamp Crawley Town’s emphatic 4-0 win at Newport County.

A brace from Jack Bridge, including a penalty, featured in Southend United’s 4-2 win over Boreham Wood in the National League.

In National League North, Cameron Salkeld was on target twice for Darlington as they won 3-1 at Warrington Town.

NPL West saw a goal for Jake Jervis in Hednesford Town’s 4-3 defeat at Nantwich Town.

And former Blues youth defender Elliott Day scored in Whitley Bay’s 2-0 away win over North Shields in Northern League Division One.

In the Isthmian League North Division, meanwhile, the evergreen Derek Asamoah, 42, was on target for New Salamis in their 4-0 win over Basildon United.

Tuesday then saw a big moment for Owen Moxon, who scored his first Portsmouth goal in impressive style from 25 yards to earn the League One leaders a 2-2 televised draw with Derby County.

In the Premier League, Jarrad Branthwaite's latest Everton appearance came in a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at St James' Park.
