LOCAL ROUNDUP: Danville girls basketball edged out by Maroons

Dec. 16—DANVILLE — The Danville girls basketball team made a big rally, but it was not enough as the Vikings lost 52-42 to Champaign Central on Thursday.

Jada Bell had 16 points for the Lady Vikings, who was down 23-9 at halftime, but outscored the Maroons 33-29 in the second half, while Amara McFarland had 13 points, Ashanti Conaway had seven and Anna Houpt added four.

The Vikings will host Peoria Manual today.

Hoopeston Area 45, Oakwood 36

HOOPESTON — The Hoopeston Area girls basketball took a strong early lead and went on to get a 45-36 win over Oakwood.

Claire Dixon had 17 points for the Cornjerkers, who jumped out to a 17-3 first quarter lead, with Mady Klaber had nine points, Brylie Cox had seven points and Kaitlynn Lange and Maddie Barnes each had five.

Jaydah Arrowsmith had 19 points for the Comets, while Nikita Taylor had seven and Luci Morris added five points.

The Cornjerkers will play Clifton Central on Tuesday, while the Comets will take on St. Thomas More on Saturday.

ST. JOSEPH — The Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin girls basketball team hung early with St. Joseph-Ogden but would lose 55-26 on Thursday.

Ella Myers, Beth McMahon and Mayzee Myers each had six points for the Blue Devils, who was only down 6-5 after the first quarter, while Marleigh Schmit had three points.

The Blue Devils will face North Vermillion in the Blue Devil Classic on Dec. 27.

WEST LEBANON, Ind. — The Seeger girls basketball team was able to build a lead and keep it in a 37-24 win over Covington on Thursday.

Cadence White had 12 points for the Patriots, who had a 23-12 halftime lead, while Caleigh Purcell had nine, Rylea Wetz had eight and Hannah Frodge added four points.

Alex Sutherlin had 10 points to lead the Trojans, while Karma Kingery, Lily Hacquet and Sydni Crain each had four points.

Covington will face North Newton on Saturday, while Seeger will take on Covington again next Thursday in the Bi-County Tournament.

Drew Wichtowski had 21 points to lead the Tigers, who had a 26-5 lead after the first quarter, while Easton Barney had 17 points, Cameron Steinbaugh had eight and Tryce Setser and Matthew Darling each had six points.

WATSEKA — The Hoopeston Area boys basketball team had a great start to the Watseka Christmas Tournament on Thursday with a 50-15 win over Illinois Lutheran.

Owen Root had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Cornjerkers, while Wyatt Eisenmann had nine points and 10 rebounds, Trenton Montez had six points and Kendrick Sigerill added five.

The Cornjerkers will continue action in the tournament on Saturday.

HOOPESTON — The Hoopeston Area wrestling team slid past North Vermillion 36-34 on Thursday.

Angel Zamora (175 pounds) and Tucker Deck (275) won by pin for the Cornjerkers, while Charlie Flores (106), Aiden Bell (138) won by forfeit.

Wyatt Walters (132), Bradley Cope (157), Quintin Holt (165) and Aiden Hinchee (215) won by pin for the Falcons, while Aden Rangel (126), Andrew Botner (144) and Warren Pollard (150) each won by decision.

Armstrong-Ellis fourth in state

HAVANA — The Armstrong-Ellis girls basketball team ended the season with the IESA Class 8-1A third place game on Thursday.

The Cardinals had to settle for fourth after losing to Paris Crestwood 40-15 in the game.

Ashlyn Ackerman had 6 points for Armstrong-Ellis, while Silver Button had five and Isabel Bullington and Acelyn MCcall each had two points.

Armstrong-Ellis will finish the season at 21-2.

Host Havana would win the championship with a 36-25 win over Liberty.
