Local teams compete in Battiest Baseball Classic

Mar. 19—BATTIEST — Baseball teams from Roff and Latta split a pair of games over the weekend at the Battiest Baseball Classic.

Roff, ranked No. 4 in Class B, dropped a tough 7-6 decision to No. 11 Caney before rolling past host Battiest 10-2.

Latta, No. 7 in Class 2A, pushed past Class B No. 15 Boswell 10-9 before falling to Idabel 5-3.

The Panthers returned home at 2-1, while the Tigers stand at 5-3 on the season.

Class B No. 7 Asher finished 1-2 in Battiest. After falling to Cameron 7-6 and suffering an 8-6 loss to Haworth, the Indians regrouped and turned back local foe Vanoss 4-1.

Asher left town at 2-6 on the season.

Caney 7, Roff 6

Roff led 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Caney scratched for four runs in the fourth frame before using a three-run volley in the bottom of the seventh to swipe the victory.

Ryan Wingo tied the game at 6-all with a two-RBI double and he raced home on a walk-off base hit from Cooper Willis.

Roff ended the game with just four total hits. Both Oliver Gregory and Jaxon Austin had two RBIs to pace Roff at the plate. Lane McCarter also knocked in a run and Kaden Darnell scored twice for the Tigers.

Willis led Caney's seven-hit offense with a 2-for-4 effort, including an RBI and a run scored. David Hodge was credited with two RBIs for the Cougars and Aidan Crites also knocked in a run.

Austin got the start on the bump for Roff. He struck out four, walked two and didn't allow an earned run in four innings of work. He got relief help from Gavin Wilson.

Zach Bagby was the most effective of three Caney pitchers. He struck out eight, walked five and allowed one earned run in 5.1 innings.

Roff 10, Battiest 2

The Tigers broke open a close game with a six-run outburst in the top of the sixth inning. After Battiest scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first frame to take an early lead, Roff hurlers Mason Dansby and Trey Humphers shut out the Panthers over the final five frames.

Dansby struck out six, walked two and allowed two earned runs in four innings. Humphers struck out three of the six batters he faced to end the contest.

Dansby also led Roff at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Bodey Ray finished 1-for-4 with three RBIs for the Tigers and Humphers also knocked in a run.

The Panthers finished with five hits by five different players. Braddock Stovall and Kason Stovall clubbed doubles for the home team.

Kasen Smalling was the losing hurler for Battiest. He struck out five, walked two and allowed two earned runs in four innings.

Latta 10, Boswell 9

The Panthers scored six times in the bottom of the second inning and bolted to an early 8-0 lead. But Latta had to hang on for dear life after watching the Scorpions sting the Panthers for four runs in the top of the seventh before reliever Reese Littlefield finally slammed the door with a strikeout to end the game.

Latta sent four different pitchers to the mound — Jake LaMack, Ryder Perry, Gestin Pollard and Littlefield. They combined for six strikeouts, and five walks and allowed five earned runs in seven innings.

The Panthers collected eight total hits. Deakon Smith and Darien Miller finished with two hits apiece to lead the way. Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored and Miller went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Perry ended up 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and two runs scored and Hunter Price finished 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two RBIs for Latta.

Tabor Ribera led Boswell at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, an RBI and a run scored, JW Dill went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Scorpions, while Michael Salcido cracked a double and drove in two runs.

Idabel 5, Latta 3

The Warriors scored four runs in the top of the third inning and that proved to be the difference.

Idabel out-hit Latta 10-2 in the contest. Waylon Phillips, Joseph Gibson and Rasee Raney all had two hits each for the Warriors.

Phillips went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, an RBI and a run scored; Gibson finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI; and Raney went 3-for-3 with a run scored.

Braxton Hickman earned the pitching win for Idabel. He struck out three, walked one and allowed two earned runs and one hit in five innings.

Darien Miller was the hard-luck loser for Latta. He struck out six and walked two in six innings of work. Gestin Pollard tossed one scoreless inning of relief.

Landon Fortner hit a double and drove in a run for the Panthers and Reese Littlefield finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Asher 4, Vanoss 1

Senior Brogan Culwell turned in a nice effort on the mound for the Indians. He struck out 10, walked two and didn't allow an earned run in six strong innings. Jordyn Litson tossed a scoreless inning of relief for Asher.

Cole Reeder pitched well in defeat for Vanoss. He struck out three, walked one and allowed three earned runs in six innings.

Asher had four total hits from four different players. Raygan Kuhlman and Litson supplied doubles for the Indians and Parker Wood drove in two runs.

Vanoss got five base hits from five different players. Owen Sheppard scored the only run for the Wolves.
