Los Angeles City Council will rename street near Staples Center after Kobe Bryant

Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant will have a street named after him. President of the Los Angeles City Council Herb J. Wesson Jr. made the announcement Monday, saying a portion of Figueroa St. will be named after Bryant.

The street will be renamed for Bryant between W Olympic Blvd and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Staples Center sits a block away from Olympic Blvd, meaning a street bordering Staples Center will be named after Bryant.

Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna were among the nine people who died in a helicopter crash in January. Bryant — who would have been 42 on Sunday — was remembered by his family and friends on social media. Similar tributes were made out to Gianna on her birthday.

Kobe Bryant Blvd will intersect with Chick Hearn Ct

Bryant isn’t the first Lakers legend to have a street named after him near Staples Center. One of the streets bordering Staples Center is named after Lakers broadcaster Francis Dayle “Chick” Hearn. The broadcaster spent 42 years calling games. Hearn died in 2002.

Kobe Bryant Blvd and Chick Hearn Ct will intersect just outside Staples Center.
