Luis Diaz on receiving end of horror tackle that sparks mass brawl and two red cards

Luis Diaz was on the receiving end of a horror challenge that prompted a mass brawl and two red cards during Colombia’s final game before Copa America.

The Liverpool winger was the star man as Colombia ran out 3-0 winners over Bolivia in East Hartford, Connecticut, recording both a goal and an assist in a convincing victory. And his strike was a landmark one too, being his 100th career goal for club and country - 24 of which have come for the Reds.

Diaz had set up Jhon Cordoba for Colombia’s second goal of the game, having cut inside and picked out his team-mate in the area, before getting his own name on the scoresheet. Receiving the ball on the edge of the box, he evaded three defenders before finishing into the corner.

But the game was marred and descended into chaos after the break when Diaz was on the receiving end of a horrific, two-footed studs up challenge from behind from Hector Cuellar in the 67th minute. As the Liverpool star rolled around in agony on the floor, the two sides descended into a mass brawl, as players shoved each other and lashed out.

Cuellar would only receive a yellow card for the challenge, but both teams would still finish the game with 10 men as Daniel Munoz and Cesar Menacho were sent off for their heavy-handed involvement in the melee.

Fortunately Diaz was fine to continue, completing 77 minutes before being replaced by Santiago Arias. It remains to be seen if he felt any ill-effects from the tackle.

Meanwhile, earlier in the game, there was one heart-warming moment when play was interrupted after a young boy ran onto the pitch and embraced Diaz. He proceeded to burst into tears after meeting the Reds forward before being escorted away.

Colombia’s Copa America campaign gets underway against Paraguay on June 24. They are both in Group D along with Alisson Becker’s Brazil and Costa Rica.
