Magic Johnson has made one appearance on ESPN after being hired as an NBA analyst
Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson offers illuminating commentary on every NBA playoff game each night on Twitter, but it wasn't supposed to be this way. Johnson should be breaking down each game over at ESPN, where the network announced in October that Johnson would appear "frequently."
That hasn't happened. Since that announcement, Johnson has made one appearance on "NBA Countdown," according to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post. That appearance came in March.
Since then ... nothing. Fans hoping to hear Johnson's takes likely aren't going to get them during the NBA finals, either. Johnson is not expected to appear on the network during the finals, per Marchand.
ESPN's head of NBA and studio production, Dave Roberts, told the Post that other commitments prevented Johnson from appearing on ESPN more often this season.
“There have been unexpected scheduling conflicts as Magic continues to expand his business commitments,” Roberts said. “While our new ‘NBA Countdown’ team has been exceptional this season, we have a great relationship with Magic and the door is always open to work together.”
Roberts left the door open for Johnson to return to the network in the future.
Magic Johnson busy promoting documentary
Johnson has been in the news lately. His Apple TV+ documentary, "They Call Me Magic," was released in April. Johnson appeared on the usual television outlets promoting the program.
Johnson was also the subject of HBO's "Winning Time." The show received criticism from former Lakers for its inauthentic depiction of the team. Johnson joined that chorus in April, saying he had not seen the show, but knew it was inaccurate.
