Maidens overcome slow start to defeat Lady Panthers, 40-28

Jan. 12—Jacksonville used a 13-0 run in the second quarter as a catalyst in defeating Bullard, 40-28, in a District 16-4A game that was played Friday evening at John Alexander Gymnasium.

The Maidens, who couldn't buy a bucket in the first quarter trailed 5-2 going into the second frame.

Jacksonville heated upin the second period by forcing Bullard to turn the ball over six times, which resulted in several easy baskets for the home team, who improved to 20-8, 3-0 with the victory.

Jacksonville went in front 15-7 at the break and opened the second half on a 10-2 run to go up, 25-9, following a Trunijah Butler three that came with 2:46 left in the third quarter.

The Maidens' biggest lead of the game was 16 points, which occurred with 1:01 left in regulation, following a pair of free throws by Butler.

Tia Fuller pumped in 18 points and came down six rebounds for Jacksonville while Butler finished with seven points and eight boards.

Kiah Cox pitched in six points and five rebounds.

Freshman Lila Robertson notched a double-double (11 points, 13 rebounds) for the Lady Panthers (18-7, 2-1) while Jadyn Welch added 10 points and three boards.

Both teams will be back in action Tuesday. Jacksonville is scheduled to visit Palestine while the Lady Panthers will trek to Madisonville.
