Mali 0-0 Equatorial Guinea LIVE! Penalties - AFCON 2022 result, match stream and latest updates today

Mali vs Equatorial Guinea - LIVE!

The Africa Cup of Nations last-16 concluded as Equatorial Guinea moved into the quarter-finals with a 6-5 penalty shootout win over Mali.

After 120 minutes of action failed to produce a goal, the match went to penalties. Emilio Nsue had his effort saved, but the shootout was level again after Massadio Haidara’s miss.

Pablo Ganet had the chance to win it for Equatorial Guinea and send them through, but Ibrahim Mounkoro guessed correctly and denied the midfielder to prolong the shootout.

Both sides were perfect from that moment onwards, until Mali centre-back Falaye Sacko stepped up and had his team penalty saved by Jesus Owono, and Equatorial Guinea could start their wild celebrations once the referee confirmed the goalkeeper had not left his line.

They will face Senegal in the quarter-finals, while Mali are the latest side to be sent packing by a team that went into the last 16 as an underdog.

Key Points

  • Equatorial Guinea through after Sacko miss

  • Ganet’s penalty saved as he has chance to win shootout

  • Nsue has first effort of shootout saved

  • Match goes to penalties after goalless 120 minutes

Decisive penalty...

22:11 , Matt Verri

Equatorial win the penalty shootout 6-5!

21:54 , Matt Verri

Once again, Mali must score. It’s the centre-back Sacko.

HE MISSES! Horrible penalty, but you can’t blame the defender really.

No pace on the effort, nowhere near the corner and it’s comfortably saved. Referee checking the replays... was the goalkeeper off his line?

NO! EQUATORIAL GUINEA ARE THROUGH!

SCORES! Mali 5-6 Equatorial Guinea

21:53 , Matt Verri

Eneme makes the long walk for Equatorial Guinea. Would suggest he’s not hugely confident, from the fact he’s so far down the list.

WOW! Should have been first. Straight run up, shuffles up to the ball, and just side-foots it perfectly right into the top corner. Nobody saving that.

SCORES! Mali 5-5 Equatorial Guinea

21:52 , Matt Verri

Camara next up for Mali.

Makes no mistake! This is getting really tense now, but it’s a calm penalty.

SCORES! Mali 4-5 Equatorial Guinea

21:51 , Matt Verri

Salvador the seventh taker for Equatorial Guinea. He put in a serious shift over the 120 minutes.

Just about puts the penalty away! Goalkeeper guessed right, very nearly got a touch on it... too far into the corner.

Pressure back on Mali.

SCORES! Mali 4-4 Equatorial Guinea

21:50 , Matt Verri

Dieng the man for Mali. Has to score...

AND DOES! That was brave, straight into the top corner. Probably the best penalty of the shootout.

SCORES! Mali 3-4 Equatorial Guinea

21:49 , Matt Verri

Equatorial Guinea turn to their centre-back Coco to take the sixth penalty.

No problems, slots it away perfectly! Mali once again have to score this one...

SCORES! Mali 3-3 Equatorial Guinea

21:49 , Matt Verri

All the pressure on Toure... miss and Mali are out.

Stuttering run-up, and slams it into the bottom corner. Great penalty under so much pressure.

On we go into sudden-death.

MISSES! Mali 2-3 Equatorial Guinea

21:48 , Matt Verri

Ganet.... SAVED!

That was to win it for Equatorial Guinea, but the goalkeeper guessed right! Incredible drama.

Mali not safe yet - if they miss this one, they are out.

MISSES! Mali 2-3 Equatorial Guinea

21:47 , Matt Verri

Traore, the right-back, up next for Mali.

OVER THE BAR! Terrible penalty, he looks heartbroken. Equatorial Guinea one penalty away now...

SCORES! Mali 2-3 Equatorial Guinea

21:46 , Matt Verri

Buyla, with the chance to put his side ahead for the first time in the shootout.

Shuffles up to the ball... scores! Goalkeeper dives the wrong way, good penalty.

MISSES! Mali 2-2 Equatorial Guinea

21:45 , Matt Verri

Haidara... MISSES!

Goalkeeper makes the first save of the shootout, and Equatorial Guinea are right back in it.

SCORES! Mali 2-2 Equatorial Guinea

21:44 , Matt Verri

Akapo to take Equatorial Guinea’s third penalty.

A PANENKA! Deary me, he’s pulled it off though. How about that for calmness?!

SCORES! Mali 2-1 Equatorial Guinea

21:44 , Matt Verri

Southampton’s Djenepo to take Mali’s second penalty.

Can he put it away? YES! Great penalty, lifts it into the roof of the net.

SCORES! Mali 1-1 Equatorial Guinea

21:43 , Matt Verri

Belima up next for Equatorial Guinea. Really has to score.

And does! Much better, cooly slots it into the bottom corner.

SCORES! Mali 1-0 Equatorial Guinea

21:42 , Matt Verri

Traore, one of Mali’s substitutes, up first for them.

Makes no mistake! Great penalty, sends the goalkeeper the wrong way.

MISSES! Mali 0-0 Equatorial Guinea

21:41 , Matt Verri

Nsue... blasts it over the bar! What a horrible start for Equatorial Guinea.

Stuttering run-up and he then lifts it over. Disastrous.

21:39 , Matt Verri

Here we go...

Equatorial Guinea to take the first penalty. It will be their strike Nsue.

21:38 , Matt Verri

Reminder that the winner of this shootout will face Senegal in the quarter-finals.

Huddles almost done, we’ll be getting this underway very soon!

PENALTIES!

21:35 , Matt Verri

Mali 0-0 Equatorial Guinea

In fact there’s no even that - full-time whistle goes. Goalless after 120 minutes.

Time for penalties!

21:34 , Matt Verri

120 mins: Djenepo down in the box, referee swiftly waves away the appeals. He’s not going to get a penalty for that, but it looks like we are heading to the spot very soon.

One minute added on.

21:32 , Matt Verri

118 mins: Nsue has been impressive for Equatorial Guinea since he came on.

Holds the ball up well, and then turns out of trouble to keep possession for his side. Both sides looking so tired.

21:30 , Matt Verri

116 mins: Camara with four or five step-overs... that takes the last bit of energy out of his legs as the pass wide to Haidara is straight out of play.

21:28 , Matt Verri

114 mins: Dieng bursts forward for Mali, the Equatorial Guinea defence can’t keep up with him. Gets to the byline, low cross is too close to the goalkeeper though.

Five minutes left for someone to be a hero!

21:25 , Matt Verri

111 mins: Eneme with a very cynical pull of the shirt to try and stop a Mali counter - fortunately happened on the blind-side of the referee.

Equatorial Guinea bring it forward, Salvador lines up an effort from distance. Well over the bar.

21:22 , Matt Verri

108 mins: Doumbia decides to take matters into his own hands. Receives it from a throw-in, drives inside and goes for goal from 25 yards out.

Hits it across it though, and it fades away from the far post. He’s taking a long time to get to his feet - certainly feeling the effect of his efforts tonight.

21:20 , Matt Verri

106 mins: Toure very nearly in as the ball gets played over the top, Obiang just about does enough to stop him. Goalkeeper out to help finish the job.

Back underway!

21:19 , Matt Verri

Are we going to get a winner in the next 15 minutes?

21:17 , Matt Verri

105 mins: No added time... that’s half-time!

Goalless still. Equatorial Guinea are getting better and better, Mali look really tired.

We’re getting closer to a second penalty shootout of the day.

21:15 , Matt Verri

103 mins: Equatorial Guinea Owono has an age on the ball, nobody coming to close him down.

He eventually decides to do something with it - but that something is a long ball straight to his opposite number.

21:11 , Matt Verri

100 mins: Mali with the ball as Toure runs onto a ball over the top. Lays it back to Haidara, drags it well wide. Didn’t catch hold of it at all.

Continues to be a lack of quality with the final part of every attack - for both teams.

21:08 , Matt Verri

97 mins: Penalty Equatorial Guinea?! NO.

Nsue does absolutely brilliantly to hold the ball up. Then plays the one-two, Kouyate does slightly pull him back and the striker goes down in the box. Appeals waved away.

Very minimal contact, not sure that’s going to be given. And it’s no, play on.

21:06 , Matt Verri

95 mins: Ndong with the effort for Equatorial Guinea from range, takes a horrible bounce in front of the goalkeeper and he just about manages to push it away.

They can’t make anything of it though, after a loose pass from the follow-up.

21:05 , Matt Verri

94 mins: Great position, and a woeful cross.

Goes for maximum pace with the defenders up, but it’s minimum accuracy and it flies out of play. A very tired looking delivery.

21:04 , Matt Verri

93 mins: Traore flies forward from right-back, keeps the pass through in play and whips a ball at the near post. Toure can’t get in front of his man.

Haidara then draws a cheap free-kick, great position for Mali.

Extra-time underway!

21:01 , Matt Verri

Let’s see if 30 minutes is enough to find a winner.

If not, we’re going to a penalty shootout!

20:59 , Matt Verri

There has been one shot on target in the whole match. That’s not a great stat for either team.

12 shots in total for Mali, five for Equatorial Guinea.

None of that matters now, will all come down to who has that extra bit of energy and quality left in extra-time.

FULL-TIME

20:55 , Matt Verri

Mali 0-0 Equatorial Guinea

We’re going to extra-time!

Mali have been on top for much of the match, and have had good chances to win this. But they’ve failed to do so, and Equatorial Guinea have been impressive for the last 10 minutes. They’ll be looking to keep that going in the next 30 minutes.

20:52 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Initial corner is a good one, flicked away though.

Comes out to Salvador, he swings it back into the box... over everyone and out for a goal-kick.

20:51 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: Equatorial Guinea have suddenly turned up these last few minutes.

Eneme with a lovely dummy and he’s in space on the edge of the box. Shoots... Sacko across well to block. Corner.

20:49 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Belima swings the ball in, easily caught by Mali’s goalkeeper Mounkoro.

Five minuted added on.

20:47 , Matt Verri

88 mins: From nowhere, Equatorial Guinea suddenly are away on the break.

Salvador leads the counter and plays it through to Nsue. Inside onto his left foot, and he then lashes it over the bar.

20:47 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Equatorial Guinea haven’t created anything at all this half, so if there is a winner it looks like it will come from Mali..

They continue to press forward. Haidara low into the box... Traore can’t get on the end of it.

20:44 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Djenepo with a wayward effort, and Equatorial Guinea are in no rush to take this goal-kick.

Looking increasingly likely we’ll be getting another 30 minutes of action.

20:40 , Matt Verri

81 mins: ALMOST!

Haidara played in on the left wing, good touch to take the pass in his stride. He looks up, sees Kone free in the middle and fires a ball across the face of goal.

The goalkeeper can’t get there.... nor can Kone. Very nearly had a tap-in.

20:38 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Doumbia fouled by Buyla, wins the free-kick.

It’s really silly from Doumbia, reacts to the challenge and puts his hands on Buyla, who promptly throws himself to the ground. A mess all round. Doumbia into the book.

20:36 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Haidara has options either side, but goes for goal from 25 yards. Swiftly blocked.

He makes up for it with some brilliant footwork to sit down the defender, tries to slide it through to Kone but the pass is intercepted.

20:34 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Quite the crowd in the referee’s book now - Bikoro the fourth Equatorial Guinea player shown a yellow card.

He’s quite lucky it’s only a yellow. Lunges in, and catches Haidara with the studs. Nasty challenge - seen players sent-off for less this tournament.

20:32 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Djenepo on for Mali and he’s immediately involved.

Brings it inside, plays a nice one-two and then gets the shot away from the edge of the box. Deflected and bounces just wide of the post. Owono was scrambling, he was worried that might have been creeping in.

20:29 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Good ball in from Salvador, plenty of pace on it.

Coco almost gets on the end of it, Obiang coming in at the back post... it evades both of them. Mali breathe a sigh of relief.

20:27 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Corner taken deep... and out for a throw-in. Not what Mali needed.

Equatorial Guinea really struggling when they’re on the ball, unable to keep it for any sort of sustained period.

20:26 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Salvador goes down claiming a free-kick, but changes his mind and jumps up when he realises he’s already been booked for diving.

Shot comes in, blocked. Mali break down the other end and they’ve won a corner.

20:23 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Miranda off for Equatorial Guinea. Very much for the best - he made three fouls and booted the ball into the crowd, all while already being on a yellow card.

Huge chance...

20:21 , Matt Verri

20:19 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Corner Mali, after Traore’s shot is blocked.

Whipped towards the back post, Kouyate gets up well and wins the header but it’s blocked by Coco. Good defending.

20:17 , Matt Verri

58 mins: WHAT. A. MISS.

How are Mali not in front?! Bissouma played through in the box, and he sits the defender down brilliantly as he cuts inside. Squares it to Camara, open goal... blazed over the bar.

Shocking effort.

20:16 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Quiet few minutes in the match, neither side able to take any sort of control.

We’ve already had one match go to extra-time and penalties today... is it going to be a second?

20:12 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Mali seem to have implemented a rule where any player within 35 yards has to shoot at the earlier opportunity.

Doumbia cuts inside into a good area, he’s so far out though and still decides to go for goal. Drags it well wide, barely had any pace on it by the time the ball went out for a goal-kick.

20:09 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Ndong and Machin double up on Traore, and between the two of them just about do enough to stop the winger.

Good tracking back from Salvador too, stops the switch to Haidara. Corner Mali.

20:07 , Matt Verri

48 mins: Ball switched out towards Salvador... cut out well by Haidara.

Equatorial Guinea enjoying more of the ball after half-time - until they give it away in a terrible position.

Traore drives forward, plays it through to Bissouma. Brilliant tackle from Ndong to stop him.

Back underway

20:04 , Matt Verri

Second-half has begun!

19:58 , Matt Verri

Mali with 62% of possession in the first-half, but they haven’t done enough with that.

Just two shots from both teams - one on target for Mali, none for Equatorial Guinea. Put it down as ‘room for improvement’.

HALF-TIME

19:49 , Matt Verri

Mali 0-0 Equatorial Guinea

Goalless at the break. Not a huge amount of chances, but Mali certainly the better team.

They’ve got into good positions, but the final ball hasn’t been there yet. Equatorial Guinea need to be careful with the number of players they have on yellow cards.

19:47 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Two minutes added on at the end of the half, almost entirely due to that VAR review.

19:45 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Ganet the third Equatorial Guinea player into the book, a soft pull back and the referee brings out the yellow card.

That’s both wingers and a central midfielder that now need to be careful.

NO PENALTY!

19:43 , Matt Verri

Referee overturns his decision!

That’s probably correct, was no real contact at all. Equatorial Guinea survive.

Miranda needs to be very careful though - already on a yellow card and then booted the ball into the crowd after the penalty was given.

PENALTY MALI!

19:42 , Matt Verri

Doumbia down in the box... referee points to the spot!

Miranda gets his body across, Doumbia barges into him and goes down. Not sure that’s a penalty.

Referee over to look at the monitor.

19:40 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Miranda down after a challenge from Kone, free-kick for Equatorial Guinea.

It would be fair to say the Mali striker was not impressed with how Miranda went to ground...

19:38 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Kone holds it up, and Mali then try and lift it through to Bissouma but it’s cleared.

The midfielder is much more advanced for his country, than the position he plays for Brighton.

19:34 , Matt Verri

33 mins: SHOULD HAVE SCORED!

Lovely ball into the box from the free-kick, falls to Haidara in the box. He looks certain to score from ten yards out, but the midfielder completely scuffs the effort and it dribbles through to the goalkeeper. Big miss.

19:33 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Miranda into the book now for Equatorial Guinea, joining his teammate Salvador.

Can’t have any complaints, not sure what he was doing. Bissouma was bursting away but he was still a fair away out from goal, and Miranda just dragged him to the ground.

19:31 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Match is fairly scrappy, both teams are being careless on the ball.

Mali win it back after a loose pass from Equatorial Guinea... but they then return the favour. Neither side able to keep the ball.

19:27 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Hanza very nearly with a great chance for Equatorial Guinea.

Cross is swung in from a mile out but it’s a great delivery, so much pace on it. Over the defender’s head, but Hanza can’t get enough on the header and it’s flicked wide.

19:25 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Salvador down, expecting the foul. He does not get it... in fact, he gets a yellow card for diving.

Referee in no mood for any play-acting this evening, it would appear.

19:23 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Haidara keeps finding himself in good positions, can’t produce the final ball to go with it yet though.

Relatively open start to the match, but neither keeper worked yet.

19:20 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Equatorial Guinea win a corner, after good work from Salvador. What can they do from this.

It’s a good ball, but somehow runs through everyone in the box. Deserved better.

19:18 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Mali increasingly dominating possession, starting to really pin their opponents back.

Traore plays it through to Bissouma who has made a great run into the box. Cut back into the box... none of his teammates are there.

19:15 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Doumbia with the nutmeg as he looks to burst into the box, but then throws himself to the ground. Not getting a decision there.

Mali do look dangerous when they get the ball in wide areas. They do so again, Haidara completely free on the left. Poor cross, straight at the goalkeeper.

19:11 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Machin swings it in for Equatorial Guinea. Blocked... they’re screaming for handball.

VAR having a look. Heads it straight onto his arm. Would be an incredibly harsh decision to give a penalty for that.

And they don’t. Mali survive that brief scare.

19:09 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Great effort from Kone, whistles just wide of the post.

Doumbia’s cross is not a good one at all, low and bobbling into the box. Kone makes the most of it though, bringing it under his control and then swivelling brilliantly. Close to the opener.

19:06 , Matt Verri

5 mins: First corner of the match, and it’s Mali’s.

Not their best, too loopy and it’s straight into the arms of Owono. Nice confidence booster for him.

19:04 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Good start from Equatorial Guinea. They get to the byline and it’s cut back to Bikoro... just wide.

Decent early chance, and plenty of encouragement for the underdogs.

Infantino: Biennial World Cup will discourage Africans from crossing Med

18:25 , Malik Ouzia

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has bizarrely claimed that modifications to football’s calendar will make African migrants less likely to embark upon dangerous Mediterranean Sea crossings in search of a better life in Europe.

The head of football’s world governing body was speaking at the Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, discussing proposed reforms to the global football calendar, which include the potential of World Cups being held every two years.

He said the proposals were vital to give the football world outside of Europe hope, adding: “We need to give hope to Africans so they don’t need to cross the Mediterranean in order to find, maybe, a better life but more probably death in the sea.

“We need to give opportunities and we need to give dignity, not by giving charity but by allowing the rest of the world to participate.”
