Man, 45, arrested in south east London on suspicion of war crimes during Liberian civil wars

A man has been arrested in south east London on suspicion of war crimes relating to the Liberian civil wars.

The 45-year-old was arrested by officers from the Met Police war crimes team at around 7.20am on Thursday morning.

The Metropolitan Police said the alleged offences relate to the first and second Liberian civil wars between 1989 and 2003.

The suspect is being held on suspicion of offences contrary to section 51 of the International Criminal Court Act 2001.

A Met statement said: “He has been taken into custody at a central London police station.

“The arrest follows an allegation of offences relating to the first and second Liberian civil wars, between 1989 and 2003.

“Officers are currently searching an address in south-east London.”
