Man City vs Chelsea LIVE!

Kevin De Bruyne scored a brilliant winner as Premier League leaders Manchester City moved 13 points clear with a 1-0 victory over second-placed Chelsea.

The Belgian playmaker beat N’Golo Kante and then curled beyond Kepa Arrizabalaga from distance to settle a tight contest at the Etihad Stadium with 20 minutes remaining.

It was a moment of magic worthy of winning any game but was the least City deserved having dominated against the side that beat them in last season’s Champions League final.

The win ensured a double for Pep Guardiola’s side, who have now won 12 Premier League matches in a row, over Chelsea this season and possibly ended the Londoners’ title chances.

Third-placed Liverpool, 14 points behind but with two games in hand, may now be the only side that could realistically hope to deny City a fourth crown in five years, but it looks a tall order.

Report on a big afternoon for City

16:07 , Matt Verri

Man City moved 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League table as Kevin De Bruyne gave them a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at the Etihad.

The home side were on top throughout the match but struggled to find the breakthrough until De Bruyne’s wonderful second-half strike finally gave his side the lead.

It took City’s winning run in the league to 12 matches and while Liverpool, who are 14 points behind, have two games in hand, Pep Guardiola’s side continue to look unstoppable in their defence of the title.

James Robson’s analysis

15:33 , Matt Verri

Chelsea’s title race is run.

In truth it did not take a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City to confirm that – but after witnessing this one-sided contest at the Etihad, it begs the question of whether they were ever realistic challengers to Pep Guardiola’s Premier League dominance.

It took a moment of brilliance from Kevin de Bruyne to separate the sides on the day, but that does not tell the whole story.

In a game that Chelsea simply had to win to keep their slim title hopes alive, they spent long periods in apparent awe of their opponents. City dominated possession to force the Blues further and further into retreat.

Guardiola hails City

15:16 , Matt Verri

“In 180 minutes this season, we conceded one shot against [Chelsea],” Guardiola said

“I saw the games against Liverpool and Tottenham, they are an outstanding team. So to be able to control them is so difficult. We knew the duels. They are a fantastic team.

“We can’t forget the team we played. European champion. On the touchline you realise how incredible they are. They wait for the transition to punish us. We created enough chances to win. We had the intention to win from minute one.”

De Bruyne’s winner...

What next...

14:57 , Matt Verri

Liverpool will hope to move into second place when they host Brentford tomorrow. Victory at Anfield would move them to 11 points behind City.

Southampton, Brentford and Norwich are City’s next three matches, so they’ll be confident of keeping their winning run going.

For Chelsea, a trip to Brighton and a home match against Tottenham are up next in the league, before they head off to the Club World Cup.

How the Chelsea players rated

14:49 , Matt Verri

Chelsea player ratings: Not good enough as faint title hopes extinguished

Tuchel: Lukaku needs to do better

14:44 , Matt Verri

Tuchel was critical of Romelu Lukaku’s performance, when it was suggested that the Chelsea team could have given the striker more service.

“Sometimes he needs to do the service, he’s included in this,” Tuchel said.

“He had many ball losses without any pressure, and many ball losses in very promising circumstances. He had a huge chance, so he’s included.

“Of course we want to serve him, but he’s part of the team. The performance up front, especially in the first-half, we can do much, much better and we need to do much better.

“We had a lot of transition chances in the first-half.”

Tuchel believes Chelsea deserved more

14:40 , Matt Verri

“I think we deserved a draw, I think we defended very well,” Tuchel said.

“We didn’t allow big chances. One in the first-half from a big mistake from us, and we were not under so much pressure that it was clear they would score at some point.

“We had chances, so performance wise it was ok. The commitment, I’m absolutely ok with that. A draw would be a fair result, but that’s the way it is.”

Tuchel: We will never give up on title

14:38 , Matt Verri

The Chelsea boss gets asked if the title race is over, and he’s not wrong with his response.

“It’s not my question to answer,” Tuchel said.

“We will never give up, but if City keep winning every game nobody can catch them.”

More from De Bruyne on importance of win

14:34 , Matt Verri

“It’s a big game, and I think they came here with a very good plan - they were very tight defensively,” De Bruyne said.

“We played a pretty good game, and obviously it’s nice to score the goal and it’s important. The team played very well today.

“We knew if we won today we’d make the gap bigger on them. We don’t have to look at that, we’ve been in this situation before where we are points ahead. A lot of things can change and the momentum can swing quickly.”

Kevin De Bruyne on title race

14:31 , Matt Verri

The match-winner is not ready to say the title race is over, but he knows Chelsea and Liverpool now face a mammoth task to get back into it.

“It’s very hard, because they need to be almost perfect,” De Bruyne tells BT Sport.

“But there’s another team that are dangling there. We just need to keep the momentum, keep doing what we need to do and try to win each game. That’s it.

14:27 , Matt Verri

The gap now 13 points at the top... title race over?

Liverpool 14 points back, but they do have two games in hand. They’ll still have hopes of cutting that gap, but it’s hard to see City dropping that many points between now and the end of the season.

FULL-TIME

14:22 , Matt Verri

Man City 1-0 Chelsea

That surely puts an end to any title hopes Chelsea had. Kevin De Bruyne the match-winner with a brilliant finish from the edge of the area, and City were much the better team throughout.

A really disappointing performance from Thomas Tuchel’s side, never really caused City any problems.

14:21 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: Walker flies forward on the right, and he’s just about onside.

Plays it into the box... Jesus can’t get on the end of it to give himself a tap-in.

14:18 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Werner offside, and that doesn’t help Chelsea’s hopes of a late charge.

Just three minutes added on. City about to make it 12 Premier League wins in a row.

14:16 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Ball clipped over the top, Lukaku running onto it and he has the beating of the City defence.

Ederson is alert though and he comes running out to head away. Foden coming off for City, Jesus replacing him.

14:14 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Gundogan on for De Bruyne, who gets a great reception after his brilliant goal.

Grealish gets to the byline and looks to put a ball back into the box, too close to Kepa though and he beats it away.

Can Chelsea create anything in these last few minutes?

14:12 , Matt Verri

83 mins: City happy to just keep possession now, they know the job is almost done.

It almost gets much better for them though. Sterling with another great burst, he’s been great this afternoon. Plays it inside to Foden, but he blazes it over the bar.

14:09 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Chelsea free-kick, a set-piece is probably their best chance of getting themselves back into this.

Not like that it isn’t. Barely gets off the ground and City clear at the near post. Dreadful delivery from Hudson-Odoi.

He gets a second chance, and this time it’s over everyone and out for a goal-kick. Chelsea make their final change, Mount on for Alonso.

14:06 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Chelsea having more of possession now as you’d expect, but they’re struggling to create anything.

Kante tries to play the killer pass through the City defence, but Silva slides in to intercept.

James Robson at the Etihad

14:04 , Matt Verri

That is no more than City deserve - even if their dominance has not been reflected by the number of chances they have created.

They have been a class apart from Chelsea, so it is fitting that a goal of that quality separates the sides.

Tuchel will have to look long and hard at himself again after this performance. He admitted yesterday that he got it wrong the last time these sides played and that Chelsea were too passive. Exactly the same could be said again after this. They have barely competed.

14:01 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Chelsea have woken up and they’re getting bodies forward, but it’s leaving a lot of space for City.

De Bruyne has it and Sterling is completely free on the right, but Sarr cuts out the pass to him. Sterling would have been clean through if that ball reached him.

GOAL! Man City 1-0 Chelsea | Kevin De Bruyne 70'

13:59 , Matt Verri

WHAT A GOAL!

City have the lead and De Bruyne has given it to them with a wonderful strike.

He picks the ball up and brings it deep into Chelsea territory. Kante tries to hack him down, but De Bruyne keeps his balance and stumbles on. He then unleashes a curling effort from outside the box and Kepa can’t get near it. Brilliant finish.

13:57 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Lukaku goes down as he tries to bring it forward, no free-kick though.

Sterling has it and he can drive into the box and have a shot, but he drags it wide of the far post. Chelsea now making those changes - Hudson-Odoi and Werner on for Ziyech and Pulisic.

James Robson at the Etihad

13:56 , Matt Verri

Chelsea are making changes. Werner and Hudson-Odoi are coming on - but the service will have to be so much better if they are to make a difference.

13:56 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Lukaku was crowded out at the back post and he can’t get on the end of the deep cross.

A draw wouldn’t be a bad result for City, even though they’ve been by far the better team. Keeps them well in control of the title race.

13:54 , Matt Verri

65 mins: At last, it looks like we might get some substitutions. Neither manager has made a change yet this afternoon. Werner and Hudson-Odoi have been called over by Tuchel.

Alonso gets forward and Walker blocks his cross out for a corner. Rare chance for the Chelsea centre-backs to get forward.

13:52 , Matt Verri

63 mins: De Bruyne goes for goal this time and it’s a decent effort, but Kepa can get across to turn it behind for a corner.

The Belgian will take this too. Kepa punches it out to the edge of the box... Foden lines up the volley as he runs onto it but Silva brings it down himself, much to the frustration of his teammate.

13:51 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Add another one to the list of poor passes from Chelsea. Alonso should do better when playing it through to Lukaku, but it’s badly underhit.

Grealish with a direct burst at the Chelsea defence, and he wins a free-kick as Azpilicueta trips him 20 yards out.

James Robson at the Etihad

13:49 , Matt Verri

Tuchel is doing nothing to hide his frustration down there. Chelsea’s use of the ball has been so poor, with Kovacic the latest to get a pass all wrong.

They are only going to have limited opportunities to break City down and they have to do much better when they come along.

13:48 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Chelsea backing themselves to play out from the back, and this time they do it really well.

Kovacic has space on the halfway line as the visitors look to break forward. Tries to lift it over the top... certainly does that, but it’s nowhere near a Chelsea shirt and it’s straight to Ederson.

13:45 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Pressure really starting to build now, Chelsea struggling to get out. Camped back on the edge of their box.

Corner City. Curled in towards the near post, Azpilicueta heads behind. It will be yet another corner for the home side, their eighth of the match.

Foden again to the near post, where Azpilicueta is well-positioned to get it away.

13:44 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Sterling drives between Alonso and Kante in the box, and goes down appealing for a penalty.

All for nothing, the offside flag goes up after Walker was beyond the last defender in the build-u

13:41 , Matt Verri

53 mins: City free-kick in a dangerous position, as they look to regain control of the match after a bright few minutes from Chelsea.

Laporte optimistically stands over it, before getting pushed away. De Bruyne takes and clips it into the box, and Kepa is out to easily claim.

James Robson at the Etihad

13:39 , Matt Verri

A much brighter start for Chelsea in this half - which is down to being more aggressive in midfield and actually pushing City back.

Their final output has let them down, but this is certainly something to encourage Tuchel.

13:38 , Matt Verri

49 mins: This is much better from Chelsea, but Walker’s space quickly slams the door.

Lukaku sweeps it through to Ziyech, who briefly thinks he’s in... Walker has other ideas. Alonso lines up a shot from 20 yards out and lets fly, over the bar.

Three shots already for Chelsea in this half, after none in the first 45 minutes.

13:36 , Matt Verri

47 mins: City appealing for a penalty... nothing given!

The hosts are straight back on the attack after the break. De Bruyne has a lot of space on the left, plays it into the box and Sterling can’t quite get on the end of it. VAR check he hasn’t been pulled back, and the check is swiftly over.

Chelsea break and it’s a huge chance... EDERSON SAVES! Lukaku was clean through and tried to bend it round him, but it’s well saved.

Back underway!

13:33 , Matt Verri

City kick-off the second-half. No changes from either boss at the break.

13:32 , Matt Verri

First time under Thomas Tuchel that Chelsea haven’t had a single shot in the first-half. It would be fair to say there’s room for improvement for the Blues.

Players about to get back out for the second-half, we’ll be underway again shortly.

13:27 , Matt Verri

It’s a strong Chelsea bench this afternoon. Mount, Havertz, Werner, Hudson-Odoi... Tuchel certainly isn’t short of options.

He’ll be certainly considering changes to that front-line, and he has players on the bench that could cause City real problems.

13:21 , Matt Verri

City had 63% of possession in that first-half, although it felt like a lot more.

Six shots, three on target for the hosts. Not a single shot for Chelsea in the opening 45 minutes. The front three have not been able to produce anything at all.

HALF-TIME

13:18 , Matt Verri

Man City 0-0 Chelsea

Not the greatest of 45 minutes at the Etihad. City have very much been on top, and should have taken the lead through Grealish but Kepa was out well to save.

Tuchel will surely be eyeing at least one change at the break, the visitors have offered very little.

13:16 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Ziyech has a bit of space and looks to curl a cross into the box, with Lukaku waiting. Charged down though. Been hardly any balls into the box for the Belgian to attack.

One minute added on at the end of the half.

James Robson at the Etihad

13:15 , Matt Verri

Still just the eight touches for Lukaku. If Chelsea cannot get the ball to him, there is no point in keeping him on the pitch.

Havertz would be able to drop deep and get on the ball and perhaps pull City’s centre backs out of position.

13:15 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Chelsea could really do with the half-time whistle.

Slipped through to De Bruyne, decides to let fly from a tight angle and it’s well over the bar. City getting down the sides of the Chelsea defence more and more, but can’t make the most of it yet.

James Robson at the Etihad

13:13 , Matt Verri

That was a wonderful save from Kepa. City should be 1-0 up, but he was off his line quickly to block Grealish’s shot.

Chelsea are finding this hard going enough without gifting City chances as Kovacic just did.

Only five minutes until half time, but Chelsea have got to get more of the ball and be more accurate with it.

13:12 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Pulisic down holding his shin, and he’s not happy with the referee. He’ll be fine to continue.

Foden and De Bruyne try a play the one-two, both go down claiming a free-kick. Neither get one.

13:11 , Matt Verri

39 mins: MASSIVE CHANCE.

Chelsea playing it out from the back and they very nearly gift City a goal. Kovacic’s loose pass and it falls to Grealish who is completely free.

Into the box, Kepa is out well to get a touch on the shot and it’s just wide of the far post. Grealish should really have scored.

13:09 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Another corner for City, but once again it comes to nothing. Haven’t been able to cause any real problems from set-pieces.

Walker whips a ball through to De Bruyne and he’s in behind the Chelsea the defence. Squares it towards Grealish in the box, but Rudiger is back to clear it away. And now the offside flag goes up.

13:06 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Brilliant from Foden, suddenly clicks into top gear and bursts past Kovacic, Azpilicueta and Rudiger.

It’s a really nice ball into the box too... no City shirt in there. Alonso has time to control, work it onto his left foot and then wins a cheap free-kick.

13:04 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Decent ball from De Bruyne to the far post, Alonso has to put it behind for a corner as Laporte put pressure on him.

Chelsea deal with the corner well too, as Rudiger heads it away.

13:02 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Kovacic robs Rodri in midfield, and then wins the free-kick as the Man City man tries to win it back.

It’s not been a hugely eventful first half an hour at the Etihad, but Chelsea have been solid enough at the back to keep it level. Need to make more of their opportunities on the break though.

Kovacic brings down Silva who cut across him, late challenge. Yellow-card.

12:59 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Azpilicueta plays it wide to Pulisic and he has space to run into.

Keeps hold of it for too long, and when he eventually does try to drill it into the box, Cancelo is back to block. Azpilicueta then tries to pass it back to his teammate, who is in an offside position.

12:57 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Can Chelsea break here now, as it’s played up to Lukaku?

He turns and looks to run at Stones but the touch is a really heavy one, and the England defender can poke it away. Lukaku has to be holding it up better than that.

James Robson at Stamford Bridge

12:56 , Matt Verri

It is fascinating to see the fluidity of City’s attacks in comparison to Chelsea.

Sterling, Foden, Grealish and Bernardo constantly interchange positions, which makes it feel like they always have an extra man.

Compare that to Chelsea, who broke moments ago, but Lukaku was surrounded by so many City shirts that it meant Ziyech’s cross had to be absolutely perfect. It was not.

12:55 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Grealish has it wide and De Bruyne has space in the box as it’s played through to him.

Tries to cut it back towards Foden, but doesn’t quite get it right and it’s straight at Kepa. Pressure starting to build but no clear-cut chances yet.

12:54 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Chelsea so solid in their shape, but City nearly find some space in the box.

De Bruyne makes a nice run on the overlap to open up some space for Silva to cut inside. He slides a ball through to Sterling, but the winger was on his heels and it runs away.

12:52 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Foden with the pass to Grealish, and he has the chance to take on Rudiger.

Instead opts for the backheel to Cancelo, but Rudiger is quickly across to win it back and then earn a free-kick for his side. Away fans enjoyed that.

12:49 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Foden sends it into the box but it’s straight over everyone and out of play.

Kepa gets the defenders up the pitch, wants to sends the goal-kick up the pitch and give his side a bit of territory. Kicks it straight out for a throw-in, which doesn’t help his team much.

12:47 , Matt Verri

16 mins: City dominating possession as you’d expect, Chelsea struggling to get out on the counter since that Lukaku chance.

Sterling bursts forward and drives into the box, Sarr with a great sliding challenge to halt his progress. Another corner.

12:45 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Corner is taken short, before Sterling then floats a ball to the back post.

Stones gets up well to win the header, but it’s straight at Kepa and a comfortable enough save for the Spaniard.

12:44 , Matt Verri

13 mins: City open Chelsea up, as Cancelo lifts a lovely ball over the top for De Bruyne.

He keeps it in and lays it back into the box, but Chelsea have enough bodies back to clear. Hosts are quickly back on the attack though, Cancelo cuts inside and his shot is deflected behind for a corner.

12:42 , Matt Verri

10 mins: HUGE CHANCE.

Chelsea find themselves in a brilliant position, after Lukaku is far too strong for Stones and he bursts forward. Alonso to his left, Ziyech to his right, and it opens up for the shot.

The Belgian instead opts for the reverse pass to Ziyech, who can’t get on the end of it and is offside anyway. Chelsea had to make more of that.

James Robson at the Etihad

12:40 , Matt Verri

Pulisic has started on the right and Ziyech on the left, but that could change. Tuchel has gone for pace, which would seem a wise decision - but only if those two players can be released.

It would not have been a surprise to see him play Havertz instead of Lukaku as someone who can drop deep and drag the centre backs out of shape to leave space for the wide men to get behind.

Instead it will be Lukaku trying to engage Stones and Laporte in a physical battle, but it is a case of how much of the ball he will see.

12:39 , Matt Verri

8 mins: City players are demanding the yellow card comes out... and it does.

Sterling bursts past Alonso on the left wing and the wing-back is in big trouble. All he can do is bring him down cynically, and he’s into the book already. Long match ahead for him now.

Sarr heads away De Bruyne’s ball into the box.

12:37 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Good from Thiago Silva, gets across to cut out a ball through to Foden.

City already look like they’re going to exploit Chelsea’s high-line, runs in behind have been so dangerous.

12:35 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Kepa’s first involvement... and it’s not very convincing at all.

Ball over the top and Grealish is running onto it. The goalkeeper charges out to clear, hits it straight into Azpilicueta and luckily it rolls out for a corner rather than into the empty net.

That’s better though, Kepa claims the corner well.

12:33 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Chelsea look to press high up the pitch early on. Stones has to send it long, after Walker almost sent it out for a corner.

Decent start from the visitors, looking to get on the front foot.

KICK-OFF!

“Will I be unhappy for the rest of my life if we cannot make it? Maybe not, but I would be absolutely furious with myself if we didn’t try.
