Manchester City Women have added a third World Cup winner to their ranks with the signing of United States defender Abby Dahlkemper on a two-and-a-half-year contract until the summer of 2023.

The 27-year-old centre-back joins her USA team-mates Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle at City, after the two midfielders both signed for the Women’s Super League club in August 2020.

Dahlkemper, who was ever present for the USA as they retained their world title in France in 2019, arrives after four campaigns with American outfit North Carolina Courage. She has been named in the American NWSL’s best XI on three occasions and is widely regarded as one of the most reliable defenders in the world.

The former Western New York Flash star will join a Manchester City backline that is already packed with world-class international talent, including Fifa Best player of 2020, England right-back Lucy Bronze.

City also have England skipper Steph Houghton and her fellow England internationals Alex Greenwood, Demi Stokes and Gemma Bonner among their defensive options, and have conceded just nine goals in their nine WSL matches so far this term.

“It’s a world-class club full of incredible players and I can’t wait to get started,” Dahlkemper told the club’s website. “Sam [Mewis] and Rose [Lavelle] have been saying nothing but brilliant things about the club and hearing them speak so highly about the facilities, the staff and the players, as well as their experience of a new technical and tactical challenge, is something that was really appealing to me.”

City’s managing director Gavin Makel added: “We’re delighted to welcome Abby to the club, who brings with her a wealth of experience and knowledge of what it takes to be successful at the very top.

“Her record speaks for itself in terms of what she has achieved in the game, whilst her hard work and determination to improve are just two elements of the type of player and person she is. I’m thoroughly looking forward to seeing her join up with the rest of the team.”

Dahlkemper, Mewis and Lavelle are all away on international with the USA for their January training camp, so will miss Sunday’s home league game against Aston Villa.
