Man United 3-1 Crystal Palace LIVE! Pre-season friendly result, match stream and latest reaction today

Manchester United continued their perfect record under Erik ten Hag with a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace in Melbourne. In their penultimate match of their pre-season tour in Australia, United were once again impressive as they built on wins over Liverpool and Melbourne Victory.

Anthony Martial got his third goal of pre-season, before Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho extended the lead after the break in a dominant showing. It was a messy final 20 minutes though from United, after making a number of substitutions, as Joel Ward netted a consolation goal and teenager Will Fish was shown a straight red card late on.

United now travel to Perth where they will face Aston Villa, while Palace will join them there for a match against Leeds. Much of the Eagles’ first-team remain in the UK, due to being unable to travel to Australia, and they will face Gillingham later on Tuesday.

Pre-season continues for Palace... tonight!

It’s likely to be a stronger side against Gillingham this evening than it was here against United. So many first-team players back in the UK and they will be in action later on.

Frustrating preparations for Vieira.

Big season ahead for Sancho?

13:21 , Matt Verri

Not the best of first seasons for Sancho at United, but he was far from alone in struggling last campaign.

He’s looked really sharp in pre-season and will need a quick start in the next couple of months as he looks to force his way into Gareth Southgate’s World Cup plans.

Brilliant United move for second goal...

FT: Man United 3-1 Crystal Palace

13:10 , Matt Verri

And that’s full-time, three from three under Ten Hag for United.

Martial, Rashford and Sancho with the goals in a dominant first 60 minutes. Palace had a bit more success late on, with Ward scoring and Fish sent off for United, but they were off the pace for much of the match.

Both sides now move on to Perth.

90 mins: Good defending from United and Hannibal then leads the break. Savage up with him, Elanga then opts to slow things down and turn back.

Heavy pass from Wan-Bissaka out to Laird, move break down.

Heavy pass from Wan-Bissaka out to Laird, move break down.

13:03 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Malacia won’t play the full 90 minutes - Laird on for the closing stages.

United will be happy for this match to finish as soon as possible now, after a messy 20 minutes since making those changes.

RED CARD!

13:01 , Matt Verri

We do have a red card!

Wow. Fish has been sent-off for United, who are down to ten for the final six minutes or so. Drags Akinwale down, who was in on goal and the referee reluctantly sends him off.

12:59 , Matt Verri

82 mins: Palace having a far more enjoyable time of things since those United changes, as you’d expect. Even match now.

Ayew, the angriest man currently in Australia, has been withdrawn after 82 minutes of rage. Not far away from earning a rare pre-season red card.

Palace update...

12:56 , Matt Verri

12:55 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Good from Savage and United are away.

Played inside to Hannibal, goes for maximum power and it’s straight at Matthews. Either side with that much pace and it was probably in.

12:52 , Matt Verri

76 mins: End-to-end all of a sudden, Palace have been given a lot of encouragement by all those United subs.

Shot blocked in the United box, hanging on all of a sudden. United break themselves, Amad should make the pass but the break falls apart.

GOAL! Man United 3-1 Crystal Palace | Joel Ward 74'

12:51 , Matt Verri

Palace score this time!

Corner swung in, free header for Ward and De Gea makes a mess of it. Had to save that, but it finds a way through him and into the corner.

12:50 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Butland sitting on the Palace bench with his right hand bandaged up. Reminder he went off in the first-half after making a good save to deny Martial - looked to be a finger injury.

Free-kick swung into the United box, free header for Adebomi and De Gea makes a brilliant save!

12:47 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Scrappy feel to the game now, after so many changes. Not much rhythm as you’d expect.

Palace at least getting on the ball a bit, Malacia fouls Quick. Free-kick Palace. United’s new man set to play the full 90 minutes.

12:44 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Only the five changes from Palace.

One of those still on the pitch is Ayew, who fouls Amad with another clumsy challenge. He will be off soon if this continues... won’t be a sub either. Red card won’t be far away at this rate.

There you go!

12:42 , Matt Verri

GOOO... OFFSIDE!

12:41 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Palace with a brief moment of joy but it’s immediately slapped away.

Cross into the box, bounces off Andersen and falls to Mateta who finishes from a few yards out. He’s well offside though, flag is quickly up.

Both sides making about eight changes... pick a young player and they’re probably on.

12:38 , Matt Verri

62 mins: It’s so easy for United. Dalot brings the ball infield and United have plenty of numbers.

Fernandes draws the defender in, slides it wide to Rashford. Heavy touch and it runs out of play, otherwise he was in on goal.

GOAL! Man United 3-0 Crystal Palace | Jadon Sancho 59'

12:36 , Matt Verri

IT’S THREE!

Palace have their best chance of the match, Mateta fires straight at De Gea and seconds later Unitd score.

Rashford plays it to Martial, it’s a lovely ball through to Sancho and the winger is in on goal. Takes his time, waits for Ward to slide in and then fires the ball inside the near post. Lovely finish.

12:34 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Got a bit lost in that mess, but Mateta also had a real swipe at Van de Beek. Palace getting very frustrated with how this is going, Vieira would be wise to make some subs you feel.

Fernandes swings in the free-kick, Milivojevic clears.

12:33 , Matt Verri

57 mins: The one-way traffic continues. Fernandes cuts it back for Sancho, can’t quite find the space for the shot though and it’s blocked.

Fred then swings a cross in, Fernandes could volley it at the back post but tries a clever pass instead. Doesn’t come off.

And Ayew has lost his head! Been moaning all match, now flies into Fernandes. Yellow card. Not content with that, then has a shoving match with a couple of United players. Madness.

12:31 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Should be 3-0 for United!

Ball floated over the top, Fernandes brings it down and he’s through on goal. Should really score, blazes it miles over the bar though. Real chance.

12:29 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Palace are being run ragged, look so far off the pace.

That’s a bit better, win it back high up the pitch and Ebiowei works space for the shot. Blocked, important one too.

12:28 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Interesting to see how long Ten Hag gives this pretty much first-choice side tonight. They’re playing well, might opt to give them at least another 15 minutes.

Van de Beek has a similarly free role to Fernandes, only Fred sitting back when United have the ball.

Another sublime move! Cut back into the box, Fernandes lets it run but Van de Beek wasn’t expecting it. Shot blocked behind.

GOAL! Man United 2-0 Crystal Palace | Marcus Rashford 48'

12:25 , Matt Verri

Brilliant team goal! So, so good.

Long ball forward, Martial brings it down superbly and United have numbers forward. Out to Sancho, back to Martial and he lays it off to Van de Beek as he goes round the goalkeeper.

Van de Beek could go for goal from a tight angle, decides to square it instead and Rashford finishes into the empty net.

12:23 , Matt Verri

47 mins: No changes from Palace at the break, just one from United. Both managers wanting to build the fitness levels.

More of the same so far since the break. United dominating possession, Palace happy to sit deep and try and stay solid.

Back underway!

12:21 , Matt Verri

Second-half has begun.

Van de Beek on at the break, replacing McTominay. He’ll be desperate to finally make an impact at United, he’s surely got the manager now to give him the best chance.

12:20 , Matt Verri

United are out on the pitch, been waiting for about three minutes now.

And at last Palace decide they will turn up for the second-half. Underway shortly!

12:15 , Matt Verri

Sweet Caroline blaring out around the MCG. No sporting event can take place without a bit of Neil Diamond.

Second-half coming up in just a couple of minutes.

12:09 , Matt Verri

Really inexperienced bench for Palace - only Guaita and Edouard available to Vieira in terms of first-team options.

Ten Hag has plenty of youngsters waiting to come on too, as well as the likes of Van de Beek, Shaw and Wan-Bissaka.

Three in three for Martial!

12:05 , Matt Verri

HT: Man United 1-0 Crystal Palace

12:00 , Matt Verri

And that’s half-time, as Rashford drills a free-kick straight at Matthews from 35 yards out.

United much the better side, they lead through Martial’s volley. Palace’s youthful team have struggled to cope with United’s combinations in forward areas, bit fortunate it’s only 1-0.

Interesting to see how many changes Ten Hag makes at the break.

(Getty Images)

11:59 , Matt Verri

45+3 mins: An actual yellow card! It’s taken a lot but it’s finally come, met with huge arguments from the Palace players.

Not sure why. McTominay wins the ball back, he’s about to break into space and Phillips rugby tackles him.

11:58 , Matt Verri

45+2 mins: Ayew with a scream heard all the way back in London, as he’s caught by Dalot.

His leg is still in place though, despite the yells, and he’s swiftly up arguing again. Bit of an over-reaction, it’s fair to say.

11:55 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Fred takes a touch, 30 yards out and decides to go for goal. Always rising over the bar. Palace will be very happy to get to half-time as soon as possible just one goal down.

Sancho breaks into space on the right, plays it into the box but can’t find Rashford or Martial. Great lay-off from Martial to set Sancho away.

11:52 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Not the greatest of balls in from Fernandes, headed away.

Comes to Maguire, hammers an effort at goal. Not far away. That would have quietened the boos!

11:51 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Corner swung into the Palace box, Lindelof is there at the back post. Matthews flaps at it and just about gets enough on it. Fernandes puts it back in, cleared.

United piling the pressure on though, Palace pinned back in their own box. Just about holding firm, keeping themselves in it.

Clyne then looks to clear the ball, ends up just kicking through Malacia. Free-kick in a decent position.

11:49 , Matt Verri

38 mins: That’s an outrageously good cross from Rashford!

Keeps the ball in play on the left wing, cuts inside onto his right foot and fires a ball into the box. So much pace on it.

Martial throws himself at it, Matthews in goal for Palace throws himself at it. Straight in between them in the six-yard box and out of play.

11:47 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Mateta leads the break... in fact he is the break. Nobody has come with him.

Holds the ball up well and turns towards the box, decides not to wait for anybody to join him and goes for goal from distance. Blocked.

United swiftly on the counter, this time it’s Rashford who tries his luck from miles out. Well wide.

11:46 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Dalot down the line to McTominay, who has to turn back and lay it off to the full-back.

It’s played to Sancho who drives into the box, cuts it back but it’s right between Fernandes and Dalot. Neither can get on the end of it.

11:44 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Another delay, as Martial gets a ball in the face. He’s going to be fine to continue. MCG crowd have resorted to a Mexican wave - it’s never a good sign.

Ayew plays the ball outside, expecting Mitchell to be there on the overlap but he’s not quite quick enough.

11:41 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Malacia down again, turned into space really nicely but he’s then dragged back very cynically. Once again there’s no card - not sure that’s going to continue for much longer.

Been a strong first start from Malacia so far, though he’s been in the wars a bit.

11:38 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Corner taken quickly to Martial, his dink into the box is headed away. Palace break, Fred and Malacia both left in a heap as the challenges continue to fly in.

Palace with a rare attack, Rak-Sakyi has room in the box and goes for goal. Block comes in just in time. Corner.

Milivojevic takes, Andersen wins the header but Maguire is there to clear.

11:35 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Milivojevic has made plenty of fouls, and now McTominay goes lunging into the challenge. Catches Ayew, poor from the midfielder. Ayew demanding a yellow card, fact it’s pre-season has saved McTominay.

Decent intensity from both sides so far.

11:33 , Matt Verri

22 mins: That’s brilliant from Ebiowei though. Cuts inside onto his left foot, beats both Fred and Malacia. Drags an effort towards the near post, De Gea palms it behind.

Swung in, Ayew unmarked and gets on the end of it but can’t direct the header.

11:31 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Palace struggling to get any sort of possession, and none of their front players have been able to do anything.

Lots of pace for United up front and they’re rotating positions really nicely.

GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Crystal Palace | Anthony Martial 18'

11:28 , Matt Verri

Martial scores yet again in pre-season!

Brilliant finish too. Malacia with a great pass out to his fellow full-back Dalot, who chests it down and swings a left-footed cross into the back post.

Martial brings it down with his first touch and then volleys home from close range.

11:27 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Fernandes pretty much playing where he wants - drifting out to the left, dropping deep to pick up the ball. Whatever he wants.

This time he chooses to cut inside and work the ball onto his right foot, but Clyne is expecting it and slams the door shut.

11:25 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Matthews is indeed on, play back underway after a delay of a few minutes.

Palace come forward and have their first real attack of the match. Mateta goes for goal from distance, just about reaches De Gea who can make the easiest of saves.

11:23 , Matt Verri

12 mins: Butland has hurt himself making that save. Stuck a hand out, was saved by the fingertips and looks to have bent them back. Potentially dislocated something.

Matthews warming up, looks like he’ll be coming on.

11:21 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Great save!

Fred slides a brilliant reverse pass through for Martial who is clean through on goal, Butland sticks out a strong hand to deny him.

Clyne was playing him onside, big chance for Martial. Should really have scored.

11:18 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Lovely move from United, quick feet from Fernandes in the box and it nearly falls for Sancho. Does come for Martial, but he too is crowded out before he can get a shot away.

Front four from United have made a bright start, combining nicely.

11:16 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Maguire is getting loudly booed every time he’s on the ball. Nothing like a nice relaxed pre-season tour...

United seeing pretty much all of the ball early on, not finding it easy to get through the mass of Palace shirts though.

11:13 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Ten Hag promised pressing but it’s his side being rushed in possession. Passed straight out of play.

United win it back though and break quickly with Fernandes, comes to Martial 30 yards out and he’s urged to shoot. Decides not to let the fans down and gives them what they want - hammered over the bar as he slips.

KICK-OFF!

11:10 , Matt Verri

We’re up and running in Melbourne!

11:06 , Matt Verri

Long walk through the tunnels underneath the MCG for the players, as they make their way towards the pitch. Didn’t need to bother warming up.

They’ve finally made the trek - teams are out to a very warm reception!

11:02 , Matt Verri

Kick-off coming up in just under ten minutes.

Ten Hag has been speaking about his side’s relentless pressing game, and the need to get up to the standards he expects.

Palace are often comfortable on the ball under Vieira - that might be tested here.

Very different conditions...

10:55 , Matt Verri

Unlike back in the UK, a warm-up is actually needed in Melbourne at the moment.

Gloves and jacket weather for those pitchside.

Pre-season schedule

10:47 , Matt Verri

Few more pre-season matches to go for United and Ten Hag before the serious business gets underway.

They face Aston Villa in Perth on Saturday, before flying back to Europe. United will then play Atletico Madrid in Oslo on July 30, before Ten Hag takes charge at Old Trafford for the first time when his side host Rayo Vallecano the following day.

Quick look at the pitch!

10:38 , Matt Verri

More goals?

10:32 , Matt Verri

It’s been a successful trip for United so far. A 4-0 win over Liverpool got the Ten Hag era up and running, and it was followed by a 4-1 victory again Melbourne... Victory.

Another four goals against Palace and Ten Hag will be feeling very happy with life.

Ten Hag’s pre-match thoughts

10:26 , Matt Verri

Erik ten Hag has been speaking ahead of kick-off about the stage of pre-season he believes his players are at.

The Dutchman is confident the team are progressing, and hinted there may not be big changes at half-time today as he looks to continue building fitness.

“I see progression from day to day, but that has to be [the case] because 7 August we have to be ready for the start of the Premier League,” Ten Hag.

“It’s good to play a Premier League team today. A lot of players will make a step towards [playing] 60 minutes.”

United have arrived!

10:19 , Matt Verri

What a venue!

10:13 , Matt Verri

Hasn’t been much enjoyment for English fans watching sport at the MCG in recent years...

Should be more relaxing today at least, slightly less hostile atmosphere too.

Ten Hag not messing around...

10:04 , Matt Verri

So another strong lineup from Ten Hag, with De Gea, Fernandes, Sancho and Rashford among those in from the off. There’s also a first United start for new signing Malacia.

Less experienced options available for Vieira. Andersen, Mitchell and Ayew all start though, while Butland gets the nod in goal over Guaita.

Score prediction

09:24 , Alex Young

Manchester United already appear to be clicking under Erik ten Hag, though it is still very early days. Palace are having a tough pre-season with their squad split across two continents due to visa issues.

United should have enough about them to make it three wins from three.

A 2-0 win for United.

Team news

09:10 , Alex Young

United should have both David de Gea and Raphael Varane available after the pair missed the win over Melbourne Victory. Marcus Rashford should start, while Tyrell Malacia is pushing to be in the team from the off.

Hannibal Mejbri and Alejandro Garnacho are yet to be afforded minutes.

Crystal Palace are without a few first-team stars in Australia, meaning Patrick Vieira will likely stick with a familiar team to the one which lost to Liverpool.

Jean-Philippe Mateta, Odsonne Edouard and Jordan Ayew should start once again.
