Marseille is on the brink of signing Mason Greenwood from Manchester United, although it's believed that a hefty sell-on fee will be included in the deal.

Greenwood had discussions with United officials at Carrington on Monday but was absent from the first day of pre-season training with his teammates. The 22-year-old forward, who made a strong impression during his loan spell at Getafe last season, has been informed that he doesn't have a future at Old Trafford.

Charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault against the England international were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023. Greenwood's last appearance for United was in January 2022, in a 1-0 win over West Ham.

After netting 10 goals and providing six assists in 36 games last season, Getafe expressed interest in retaining Greenwood following his loan stint. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona were also said to be keen on him.

However, it now appears that Roberto De Zerbi's Marseille is leading the race to secure Greenwood's services. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Ligue 1 club has submitted a formal offer to United for the forward.

Negotiations between United and Marseille are ongoing for a potential deal believed to be worth around $32m (£25m/€30m) plus add-ons and a significant sell-on clause of between 40 to 50 per cent.

A loan deal with an obligation to buy at the end of the season has also been discussed. Marseille is "really confident" about finalizing the deal, with Greenwood being its top transfer target this summer.
