Manchester City Fan View: Citizens could genuinely go unbeaten this season

Only one team has ever gone unbeaten in a Premier League season and that, of course, was the Arsenal Invincibles side of 2003/04. With an impressive record of 26 wins and 12 draws, the Gunners famously claimed the league title with 90 points accumulated – 11 points clear of London rivals Chelsea.

Wenger’s men were an enjoyable watch over the course of that campaign, netting 73 goals and conceding 26, making for an overall goal difference of 47.

So far this term, Manchester City have won 11 league fixtures, drawn once and lost none. Pep Guardiola’s outfit have netted an impressive 40 goals in those 12 games, conceding just seven – the second fewest in the league, with just one more conceded than arch rivals Manchester United.

At their current rate, the Blues will net over 120 goals and concede around 20. Many have questioned whether City will be able to keep up their tantalising goal fest football, especially considering the necessary amount of energy, fitness and concentration required to play the Pep way.

But, so long as the Citizens do not suffer too many injuries to key members of their squad and continue to control both games in which the opposition sit back deep and defend, and games in which their opponents attempt to place severe pressure on them via high pressing, there is no reason why Guardiola cannot guide his players to multiple pieces of silverware in unbeaten fashion. Perhaps not across all four competitions in which they are participating, but most certainly in the league competition.

At the moment, the only game in which City may have intense difficulties during is Liverpool away. Despite blowing Jurgen Klopp’s machine away in a resounding 5-0 clash at the Etihad already this year, the Blues tend to struggle at Anfield.

However, with Liverpool’s defensive woes showing no sign of letting up, whilst City’s backline seems relatively secure in comparison to last season, Guardiola could continue in the record-breaking fashion with which he has begun the campaign. A win at Anfield in itself would be an impressive feat, regardless of City’s poor record there, but to do that and go the season unbeaten would be another milestone in the Spanish coaches career.

In a league in which many rival supporters doubted Guardiola’s credentials and expected him to be ‘exposed’ in a ‘more competitive league’ than he has managed in before, it might not be too long before the ‘Invincibles’ tag is forced to be attached to a current Premier League side beyond solely Arsenal, coming to extend itself from London to Manchester, from red to blue. That would be a major step in the evergrowing presence of City on the global stage.
