Manchester City Fan View: On verge of immortality after West Ham win

Manchester City swept West Ham United aside as Pep Guardiola’s men continued the form that saw them crowned Champions with five games still to play. The final score of 4-1 barely reflected the disparity between the teams at the London Stadium.

It would have been so easy for City to put their feet up with the title won and no other tangible honours left to play for. However, in the two games they’ve played since the Premier League triumph was confirmed, they’ve scored a whopping nine goals. Swansea were the first post-title victims last week when they suffered a 5-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium; David Moyes’ sorry Hammers became just another victim to this magnificent Blues side.

Rather than relax with the pressure off, City are just playing with even more freedom, if that is even possible. Raheem Sterling put in another eye-catching display; he was a problem that West Ham simply could not solve. In fact, they needed the help of the referee to deal with the quick feet of Sterling – a clear foul on him went unpunished when it really should have resulted in a penalty.

It wasn’t just Sterling; like so many teams before them, the home side just could not live with City’s possession and positional play. Ederson was freely knocking the ball out from his own box to Kevin De Bruyne around the halfway line. West Ham couldn’t do right for doing wrong – if they pressed Ederson he could just find a defender instead. If they squeezed the middle he could still go short.

The Brazilian has been a monumental part of his team’s success this season. He has assimilated into the side and the league perfectly. His quality on the ball effectively makes him a playmaker. He spoke recently of the pressure that was on him because of his large price tag, but if he has felt any pressure at all, nobody would ever have guessed, so impressive has he been.

City are now tantalisingly close to breaking two significant Premier League records. When Fernandinho’s second half strike put them 4-1 up at West Ham, he also registered the Blues 102nd league goal of the campaign. The record stands at 103. It is highly likely that we’ll see City equal – and then break – that record in a weeks time when they host Huddersfield.

That match against The Terriers on Sunday will conclude with City lifting the Premier League trophy. It will already be party time at the Etihad; taking the goals record would be a great way to celebrate. In addition, another huge record could fall as well. The all time Premier League points record stands at 95, earned by Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea team. One more win for City would give them that record. If both of those records are collected on Sunday, it would be the perfect lead into the coronation of the Champions.

After that, Pep Guardiola will have one last thing to motivate his team for. With three games remaining, City sit just seven points short of 100. Two wins and a draw would see them set a record that would surely stand for a long, long time. They are already being spoken about as one of the greatest sides this country has ever produced; 100 goals and 100 points would certainly cement their status as the best ever Champions in one season. The immortality of truly great Champions is exactly what this team deserves.
