Manchester City 3-0 Bayern Munich LIVE! Champions League result, match stream, latest reaction, updates today

Manchester City vs Bayern Munich - LIVE!

Manchester City took a huge step towards the Champions League semi-finals as they beat Bayern Munich 3-0 at the Etihad. In a blockbuster quarter-final tie between the two favourites to go all the way in Europe this season, the deadlock was broken in fitting fashion as Rodri curled a stunning left-footed strike into the top corner.

Bayern responded after the break and pushed for an equaliser as the first leg remained in the balance, but a disastrous spell for Thomas Tuchel’s side saw City take complete control of the tie. Dayot Upamecano was caught on the ball with 20 minutes remaining and the hosts pounced, Erling Haaland clipping a cross to the back post where Bernardo Silva was free to head home. And Haaland, as ever, then got himself on the scoresheet too, making it 45 goals from the season.

It leaves Bayern, who had won all eight of their matches in Europe this season, with a mountain to climb in Munich next week, and Pep Guardiola’s side remain firmly on course to lift the Champions League for the first time.

Reaction from Joshua Kimmich

22:26 , Matt Verri

“It hurts a lot. The first 60 minutes were very good.

“We were a lot more prone to mistakes after the second goal and gave away many chances. A really tough evening.”

Can’t stop scoring!

And there is the final whistle.

Man City having taken a HUGE step towards the Champions League semi-finals.

Was in the balance even after Rodri’s stunning first-half strike, but Bayern fell apart in the final 20 minutes. Goals from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland have put City in complete control.

21:49 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Three minutes added on.

Bayern pressing for a goal to take back to Munich, but really they’d be happy to just hear the final whistle now. Mane hasn’t had a touch since coming on.

21:46 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Pavard takes his frustration out on Grealish, awful challenge as he dives in. Kimmich involved too, Grealish chasing after him.

Yellow card for Pavard, and a few choice words from the City winger too to go with it.

21:44 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Bayern need this match to finish. Upamecano especially.

Tries to play the ball back to Sommer, instead it’s straight out for a corner. An absolute nightmare for the Bayern defence in this second half. And it’s nearly worse!

Sommer with a superb save to tip Rodri’s header over the bar.

21:42 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Alvarez now goes close! Bayern really have fallen apart in the last 15 minutes or so, been a complete mess.

Cancelo meanwhile is having his every touch booed. Imagine he probably won’t be returning to Manchester for long in the summer...

21:39 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Well then. Cancelo is on and he’s booed by the City fans - not exactly a warm reception.

Gnabry and Davies off, Muller and Cancelo on. Bayern have ten minutes to try and salvage something.

GOAL! Man City 3-0 Bayern | Erling Haaland 76'

21:35 , Matt Verri

IT’S THREE! BAYERN HAVE COLLAPSED!

City have taken a huge step towards the semi-finals. Cross swung in, Stones nods it across goal and Haaland is completely free at the back post.

21:34 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Big, big save! Bayern are all over the place.

Gundogan walks into the Bayern box as bodies fall all around him. Cut back finds Alvarez, shot is palmed away by Sommer and Davies just about boots it away with Silva lurking for the rebound.

21:31 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Upamecano again loses the ball deep in his own half, he’s having an absolute nightmare all of a sudden. Bayern cannot afford to concede a third.

City almost get it, as the ball comes in. Stones free in the middle but he takes a big old swing at thin air.

GOAL! Man City 2-0 Bayern | Bernardo Silva 70'

21:28 , Matt Verri

THERE’S THE SECOND!

Shambles from Bayern and it’s cost them dearly. Upamecano caught on the ball just outside his own box, City pounces.

Grealish to Haaland, Haaland to Silva... Silva heads home!

21:27 , Matt Verri

69 mins: And Tuchel turns to his bench too. Boos from the City fans as Mane is brought on, making his return to England.

Musiala the man to make way, quiet night for him.

21:26 , Matt Verri

68 mins: First change of the night. De Bruyne frustrated as he’s brought off, storms past Guardiola. Alvarez on in his place.

The Belgian has spent most of the last five minutes getting kicked.

21:24 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Kimmich swings a corner to the back post where De Ligt is lurking, Ederson flicks it away. Will be another corner, this time Sane taking it. He’s gone for maximum power from these so far.

And again, Goretzka there at the near post but so too is De Bruyne, who heads it away.

21:22 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Kimmich fires at goal from miles out, barely makes it halfway before Dias heads it away.

De Bruyne getting some treatment off the pitch as play goes on, he fell awkwardly as he kept the ball in play out wide. Back on his feet now though.

21:21 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Tuchel has been very frustrated with Musiala on more than one occasion tonight, and again he’s not thrilled as the Bayern man is shoved off the ball by Grealish.

City having a better spell now after that Bayern burst early in the second-half. Hosts taking back control.

21:17 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Wonderful goalkeeping from Ederson.

Kimmich plays a ball in behind for Sane, he would have been in on goal but the City goalkeeper reads it and is swiftly out to boot the ball away to safety.

21:15 , Matt Verri

57 mins: This really has been a brilliant match. City on the attack now, Grealish’s backheel plays Ake in. Sommer turns the shot behind for a corner.

Taken short, eventually in by De Bruyne and Sommer tips over as Dias flicks an effort at goal!

21:13 , Matt Verri

55 mins: City hanging on for dear life! De Ligt powers a header at goal, blocked by Ake. Coman then throws himself at the ball, header is destined for goal until Dias flicks it behind.

Again Sane whips it in with pace, headed out by Dias this time. City under real pressure.

21:12 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Sane 0-3 Ederson.

City continue to have no interest in marking Sane when he picks the ball up 25 yards out, and he is happy to keep going for goal.

Once again catches the strike sweetly, Ederson palms it away.

21:11 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Bayern having a terrible spell here, all of sudden they’ve forgotten they’re playing in red. Keep giving the ball back to City.

Grealish crunched by Pavard, fair tackle by the City man has a few words for the Frenchman as he sits on the ground.

21:09 , Matt Verri

50 mins: An absolute shambles at the back from Bayern. Sommer really doesn’t give off much confidence.

Upamecano and Sommer both decide to stand still and just stare at the ball, lets Grealish in. Ball bobbles around, Pavard with a ridiculous backpass to Sommer and he shanks a clearance straight to Haaland.

Kimmich brilliantly throws himself in front of the shot in the box.

21:07 , Matt Verri

49 mins: First yellow card of the night and it goes to Silva, as he drags Musiala back.

The Bayern man then plays a lovely pass through to Sane, he’s in on goal but Ederson produces the save. Davies then into the book too as he goes in on late on De Bruyne.

21:05 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Space for Sane to drive into on the left straight after the break, again goes for goal from distance. Ederson shovels it straight out, luckily for him nobody in a red shirt is following in.

Confident start to the second half from Bayern.

Back underway!

21:04 , Matt Verri

Up and running again at the Etihad!

20:59 , Matt Verri

55% possession in the opening 45 minutes for Bayern.

City have been happy to let them have the ball, because Bayern’s most dangerous moments have come on the counter. Does definitely feel like they’re missing a finisher though.

A decent way to get off the mark...

20:52 , Matt Verri

HT: Man City 1-0 Bayern

20:48 , Matt Verri

Sane hammers an effort wide from distance, and that will be half-time.

A brilliant 45 minutes. Rodri’s stunning strike the difference at the break, but Bayern still well in this.

(Getty Images)

20:47 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Two minutes added on.

City cut Bayern open as De Bruyne drives forward, very nearly pulls off a one-two with Gundogan but Pavard slides in to clear the danger.

20:45 , Matt Verri

44 mins: De Ligt back on and find to continue for now.

His first act is to swan dive to the floor as he goes up for a header with Haaland. Does the job, gets a free-kick.

20:43 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Pause in play, pretty much the first of the match, with De Ligt down and in pain. Looks to have hurt his ankle challenging for the ball from that corner.

Bayern subs don’t look too thrilled as they’re told to take the massive coats off and start warming up in the pouring rain.

20:41 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Bayern try to take a free-kick four times, on each occasion the referee blows the whistle and tells them to move back a few inches. Kimmich losing the will to live.

Coman looks to drive past Akanji when play eventually does resume, City man slides in to concede the corner.

20:39 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Fairly cynical from Pavard, does well to avoid a yellow card. De Bruyne completely does him with a feint, before the Frenchman gets back and bundles him over.

Just a free-kick. De Bruyne floats it to the back post, Akanji keeps it in. Stones then swings the cross in, Pavard heads it out.

20:37 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Bayern still look dangerous on the break, space is there for them out wide. Ball cut back to Kimmich, fires a shot straight at Grealish.

Musiala then finds himself surrounded by City shirts, he’s struggled so far tonight. Not often you say that.

20:35 , Matt Verri

34 mins: MASSIVE SAVE.

Wow. De Bruyne’s cross is deflected, bounces up awkwardly and Sommer can only punch it away under pressure from Grealish.

Straight to Gundogan, hammers a volley at goal and Sommer somehow sticks a leg out to save. Incredible goalkeeping.

20:33 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Gundogan makes a lovely run from midfield, not tracked as he gets in between Pavard and Upamecano.

Sommer stranded off his line as Akanji pings the ball over the top, just too much on it for Gundogan though.

20:30 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Etihad is bouncing now, Bayern have to regroup here. City pushing for a swift second.

De Bruyne with a great cross into the six-yard box, cleared out to Ake who controls it very clearly with his hand. Not really going to get away with that.

GOAL! Man City 1-0 Bayern | Rodri 27'

20:28 , Matt Verri

CITY TAKE THE LEAD!

Absolutely stunning from Rodri!

Has space 25 yards out, cuts onto his left foot and curls an effort into the far corner, Sommer can do nothing about it. What. A. Goal.

20:26 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Bayern getting into decent positions, can’t do anything with it though yet. Ake is not giving Coman an inch.

Sane bursts away from Akanji here though, Bayern are in. Cut back picks out Musiala, free in the box but Dias throws himself in front of the shot! Brilliant block.

20:22 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Big chance!

Gundogan through to Grealish, Haaland makes the run off him and gets the pass. Goes first-team and it’s a tame effort in the end, straight at Sommer. Had more time than he thought.

20:22 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Great defending from Kimmich, stops Gundogan turning De Bruyne’s cross home at the near post.

De Bruyne takes the corner, deep to Grealish who has to turn all the way back to the halfway line. Imagine that wasn’t quite how it worked on the training ground...

20:20 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Akanji looks for the big ping crossfield to Grealish, who had half the pitch to himself. Ball got hit by the wind though and barely made it halfway.

Coman tries to knock it past Ake and beat him for pace, City man having none of that and gives away the foul.

20:18 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Bayern starting to see a bit more of the ball, as Guardiola screams at his side to push up.

Coman lays the ball back to Gnabry, he works it wide to the left. Sane tries his luck from a tight angle, charged down by Akanji and out for a throw-in.

20:15 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Tough work for Silva out on the right. Feels like he needs to be Davies about six times to actually find himself any space.

Bayern very, very casual at the back. Sommer takes an age, pretty much on his own goalline as Haaland comes flying in. Inches away from turning that into the empty net!

20:11 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Tuchel less than impressed as Musiala is fouled right in front of him, mood improved slightly as the whistle is blown for a free-kick.

Kimmich clips a great ball over the top, Gnabry can’t quite bring it down in time. Bayern stay on the attack, Davies tries his luck from distance and drags the effort well wide of the far post.

20:09 , Matt Verri

8 mins: It’s City looking the better of the two sides so far. Silva turns away from Davies, who has the pace to immediately catch up with him though.

Silva cuts back, lays it off to De Bruyne and he swings a dangerous cross into the box. Gundogan can’t quite get over it, unable to keep the header down.

20:06 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Haaland has his first effort of the night, won’t be his last.

De Bruyne shifts the ball inside, Haaland sharp and gets there ahead of Upamecano. Tight angle but he doesn’t care, lashing the shot high and wide.

20:04 , Matt Verri

3 mins: City seeing plenty of the ball as you’d expected, but Bayern are pressing high looking to quickly win it back.

Gnabry, Sane, Coman, Musiala... not short of pace. City’s defence going to be really tested tonight as the rain hammers down.

20:02 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Sensational start from Grealish, skips away from three Bayern players on the left wing and drives inside.

Plays the ball for De Bruyne on the edge of the box, space had opened up for him briefly but Musiala gets back well to intercept.

Bayern away themselves on the counter, heavy touch from Gnabry and Dias hacks it away. Frantic opening minutes.

KICK-OFF!

Underway at the Etihad!

Here we go!

19:58 , Matt Verri

Players are out onto the pitch, plenty of hugs in the tunnel.

Gundogan leads City out, Kimmich the Bayern captain. Time for the Champions League anthem - not exactly a warm response from the City fans as ever.

All in the balance for City

19:52 , Matt Verri

Reminder that it’s a quick turnaround in these quarter-finals, with the second legs being played next week.

Man City could finish the season winning three trophies, but they could just as easily end up with none. Rare position for Guardiola’s side, they’ve often wrapped up the Carabao Cup and been in a strong position in the Premier League by now.

Two huge months ahead!

Tuchel’s pre-match thoughts

19:46 , Matt Verri

“Joao [Cancelo] was an option, like Sadio [Mane]. We took some last-minute decisions today in the afternoon.

“This is how it is. I can only decide on 11 in the end. Joao and Sadio were options - I think they will finish the match.”

Not long now...

19:40 , Matt Verri

Kick-off coming up at the Etihad in just under 20 minutes.

Erling Haaland has 10 goals in his last three games, taking his tally for Man City to 44 for the season. Not too shaby.

Big chance he ticks past 60 in the next couple of months, Bayern have to find a way of keeping him quiet tonight. Somehow.

It’s a rainy night in Manchester!

19:35 , Matt Verri

Revenge on the mind?

19:27 , Matt Verri

Pep Guardiola has insisted he does not look back on the 2021 Champions League final with too much regret.

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea side got the better of City that night, but Guardiola was upbeat when discussing that defeat ahead of this clash.

“I was sad but I congratulated him and Chelsea for the victory. It happened,” the City said.

“I reviewed the game a month ago and it was not as bad as I thought. It was a tight game, like they always have been against Chelsea in this period.

“We forget it and try again.”

Ruben Dias’ press-conference thoughts

19:21 , Matt Verri

“It will be a balanced game between two very good teams,” he told reporters yesterday.

“We know we are up against a different side and obviously the Premier League is different than Bundesliga. We know it will be a balanced game between us.

“We are very sharp and ready.”

Tuchel: Cancelo has extraordinary qualities

19:10 , Matt Verri

A bit of a surprise that Joao Cancelo is named on the bench, considering Tuchel’s praise of the full-back in his pre-match conference. Perhaps felt Cancelo could be vulnerable against Grealish.

“These situations exist, I hope he can manage his emotions and he’s not over-motivated or overexcited, but also not too friendly or too shy, hopefully he can manage his emotions to be ready. I know he’s looking forward to it,” Tuchel said.

On whether the move could be made permanent in the summer, Tuchel added: “I cannot give you any serious answer to that because we have not discussed it with the club. I don’t even know the conditions from the contract.

“At the moment I’m just happy he’s my player because I’ve played many times against him and very aware of his extraordinary qualities.”

Cancelo on the bench

18:56 , Matt Verri

Just the one change for Man City, as Bernardo Silva comes into the side for Riyad Mahrez on the right wing. Otherwise it’s as expected, with John Stones continuing in his hybrid right-back/midfield role, and Nathan Ake at left-back.

For Bayern, Joao Cancelo does not start against his parent club, with Benjamin Pavard getting the nod. Serge Gnabry leads the line with Jamal Musiala behind him - Sadio Mane and Thomas Muller both on the bench.

All-English semi-final?

18:41 , Matt Verri

These are the two favourites to win the Champions League, so there’s every chance whoever comes through the tie will go all the way this season.

Next up in the semi-final for the winner will be Real Madrid or Chelsea... could we get a repeat of the 2021 final? Or a return for Tuchel to Stamford Bridge?

Plenty of potential storylines.

Familiar face back in town...

18:33 , Matt Verri

Joao Cancelo, on loan at Bayern from Man City, is eligible to face his parent club tonight. Could be fun.

The full-back joined the German side in January after seemingly falling out with Guardiola, and it remains to be seen whether Cancelo has a long-term future at City.

“Bayern Munich is a club that considers discipline to be very important,” he told Bayern’s YouTube channel in the build-up to this match. “The staff at Bayern are very professional - and I can identify with these principles.

“I am a very competitive player and I don’t like losing. I never give up, it sums up who I am. Discipline as well, as I am a professional and hard-working footballer with a strong personality.

“The Premier League is very competitive, with strong players physically and technically. But the Bundesliga has definitely surprised me with organised teams and good players.”

Guardiola: Winning is not easy

18:25 , Matt Verri

Pep Guardiola pointed to the likes of Michael Jordan and Jack Nicklaus as he defended Manchester City’s Champions League record.

The club are still looking to win the competition for the first time, but Guardiola insisted City should not be criticised for their failure to do so.

“All games are so difficult,” he said at his pre-match press conference.

“Yesterday, it was the Masters. How many Masters has Jack Nicklaus played or majors has he played in his career, in 30-40 years as a golfer? How many wins out of 160? Eighteen wins.

“Wow. He loses more than he wins. That is sport. In football, in golf, in basketball. Michael Jordan, the best athlete for me in basketball, won six NBA titles out of 15 years. He loses more than he wins.

“What is important is to be here, compete well, do our best. No more than that.”

Tuchel looking to repeat 2021 success

18:17 , Matt Verri

Come in mid-season and win the Champions League a few months later.

That’s the plan for Thomas Tuchel and he’s done it before. Two years ago he arrived at Stamford Bridge and led Chelsea to European glory, beaten Manchester City in the final in Portugal.

Can he take Bayern all the way and add another Champions League trophy to his cabinet?

Haaland in form!

18:10 , Matt Verri

Erling Haaland scored five goals in his last Champions League match, as RB Leipzig were blown away.

More German opposition tonight - more of the same? Surely not...

Standard Sport prediction

18:01 , Matt Verri

Manchester City can beat any team on any day, as their form proves, but a lack of clean sheets will give Bayern hope.

The Bavarians have a perfect record in the Champions League this season and you wouldn’t beat against them taking something back with them, but City should have enough to secure a narrow advantage.

Man City to win, 2-1.

Bayern team news

Bayern Munich need to work out who will be leading the line against City with Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting injured. Thomas Muller and Serge Gnabry are the obvious candidates.

Jamal Musiala is in line to start, but Sadio Mane is in a fight to keep his place. Cancelo is eligible to face his parent club.

Phil Foden is the only expected absentee for Manchester City as Pep Guardiola boasts almost a full fit squad to choose from.

Pep Guardiola has resisted doing too much tinkering in recent weeks, meaning John Stones could continue in a midfield role. Bernardo Silva is also pushing to be involved.
