Manchester United and Manchester City have both been given another 48 hours to provide their accounts of the Old Trafford tunnel bust-up that saw Sunday’s derby descend into acrimony.

The Manchester rivals had been due to provide their observations by 6pm on Wednesday but the Football Association, who are investigating the matter, has given the clubs an additional two days to compile their findings. They must now respond by 6pm on Friday.

City coach Mikel Arteta was left with a cut above the eye in the skirmishes and United manager Jose Mourinho had milk and water thrown in his direction.

Mourinho accused City of a lack of class and respect over the post-match celebrations that prompted the Portuguese to confront City players in the away dressing room after United’s 2-1 defeat but his counterpart Pep Guardiola insisted his side’s celebrations had not been over the top.

A spokesman for the FA said: “Manchester United and Manchester City have both been given extra time to provide their observations following reports of an incident  after Sunday’s game. They now have until 6pm on Friday 15 December .”

Mourinho took issue with the line of questioning from one journalist at his press conference on Tuesday, when the prospect of FA punishment was raised.

“May punish who? Why?” Mourinho said. “I think you work for another club and not for the press.”

He also insisted his players had behaved in the correct way throughout the post-match scuffle, before firmly denying it had been Romelu Lukaku who had thrown the bottle that caused Arteta's injury.
