Manchester United Fan View: Three things we learned from the win over Swansea

Manchester United’s Alexis Sanchez celebrates scoring his side’s second goal of the game

After beating Swansea City at Old Trafford on Saturday, Manchester United now have 21 league wins in with seven games remaining. The last time the Red Devils had this amount of victories was in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season at the club.

Jose Mourinho’s side secured the three points with first-half goals from Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku, whilst Swansea City had a slow start to the game but ended the match causing a number of problems for United’s defence. In the end, the result leaves Carlos Carvalhal’s men in 15th place and just three points above the relegation zone.

Here are the three things we learned from Manchester United’s win…

Alexis Sanchez with his first complete performance at Old Trafford

Following a tough first few months at Old Trafford, Alexis Sanchez finally looks to be getting into his groove as he completed a dominant display against Swansea. Alongside his important contribution of a goal and an assist, the explosive winger linked up with the likes of Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata very well and also showed his quality on and off the ball.

It seems like the international break has simply helped the Chilean international to rediscover himself, especially since he had a troubling period settling into life in Manchester, as well as moving from one club to another halfway through the season. The following figures are the stats produced by Sanchez during the game against Swansea: 49 passes, three interceptions, two chances created, two tackles won, one assist and one goal – his best performance so far in a United shirt.

Romelu Lukaku continues to show that he is a complete centre-forward

The biased and harsh criticism for Romelu Lukaku will always be there due to fact that he signed for Manchester United from Everton for a fee of £90 million during the summer. However, that has not stopped him from making history, as his opening goal was his 100th in the Premier League. At the age of 24, he is now the fifth-youngest player to reach this milestone, as well as the 28th player to complete this achievement.

Despite playing under a defensive-minded manager and within a team that has no natural wingers, it’s fair to say that Lukaku has been more than effective in his first season at Old Trafford, and will only get better once the team improves as a whole. For sure, the Belgian forward has had a few average performances towards the end of 2017, however, he has managed to produce 13 goals and four assists in 16 appearances for club and country since the start of 2018.

Manchester United in the ideal position to secure second

A lot of supporters, including myself, will want to forget this season, as the Red Devils have failed to challenge for the Premier League title as well as witness their lack of hunger and passion in the Champions League. On the other hand, what has happened cannot be changed at all and the fans can simply hope that the club end the season on a high note by finishing in second place and going for the FA Cup.

If Manchester United finish second in the league, it would be the first time that they have achieved a top-three finish since Ferguson’s final season at the club. Overall, this easily shows how poor and ineffective United have been in recent years, mainly due to their awful away form, as well as their negative approach to football.
