Manchester United completed a huge and important win against Chelsea, who had the opportunity to return back into the top four had they pulled off the three points against Jose Mourinho’s side away at Old Trafford. The result now leaves United six points ahead of the Blues in the league.

With Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur picking up the much needed results in their respective league games, the race for a top-four finish will surely go down until the final fixture of the season.

Here are the three things that we learned from United’s latest result in the league…

Mourinho finally gets his revenge over Conte

Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho have been at each other’s throats over the last couple of months, however, both managers had the chance today to get the final say on the battle that has lasted for such a long time.

As expected, it ended in a massive win for Mourinho as his in-game decision-making proved to be much better than Conte’s, who surprisingly took Eden Hazard off at the 73rd minute mark and brought on both Cesc Fabregas and Olivier Giroud way too late in the game.

On the other hand, it seems like the comments made by both coaches at the time, were to distract the media from the poor run that Chelsea and United were going through. This has to be considered given the fact that Conte and Mourinho were smiling on the touchline and were having a joke with one another, which was something that the English press did not pick up on today.

Matic and McTominay got the job done in midfield

Whether it’s a double pivot or a three-man midfield, Manchester United’s midfield has hardly controlled and dominated the game against a top-six side like they had done so against Chelsea.

Today, it was a midfield three of Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay, with the trio causing many problems for the opposition on both sides of the pitch. The setup has without a doubt, allowed the likes of Pogba, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku to play to the best of their ability.

Despite being on poor form over the last couple of months, Matic came up with an unbelievable performance as he snuffed out the danger in his own half and kept the side ticking whilst going forward. Meanwhile, McTominay did more than enough in preventing Eden Hazard from causing havoc in the final third as well as helping the team to complete their duties on and off the ball.

Lukaku shows up in a big game with a goal and an assist

From time to time, there has always been questions on when Lukaku will show up in a big fixture within a Manchester United shirt. After being very poor in the games away at Chelsea and at home to Manchester City, the Belgian international has finally silenced his critics when he came up with a goal and an assist against his former club.

It’s not easy to compare the situation of Lukaku compared to the other strikers within the league such as Harry Kane, Roberto Firmino or Sergio Aguero, because the manager has not implemented an attacking style of play into the team and there are no natural wingers within the squad that the forwards can thrive from. Despite this, the 24-year-old has still managed to produce 13 goals and four assists in 27 league appearances.
