Manchester United vs Barcelona - LIVE!

Manchester United came from behind on the night to earn a 4-3 aggregate win over Barcelona and reach the Europa League last-16. After a thrilling first leg in Spain, the blockbuster tie was right in the balance heading to Manchester. Barcelona struck first to edge ahead, as Alejandro Balde earned a penalty and Robert Lewandowski just about converted the spot-kick.

But United came flying out of the blocks after half-time and turned things around, Fred striking two minutes after the break before Antony’s brilliant first-time finish gave the hosts a 2-1 win at Old Trafford to book their place in Friday’s last-16 draw.

It extends United’s unbeaten run at Old Trafford in all competitions to 17 matches, and ensures they go into Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle full of confidence, as they look to win the club’s first trophy since 2017 and continue the charge on all fronts.

More from Ten Hag

22:54 , Matt Verri

“We have some great personalities in the team.

“Like Rapha and Licha Martinez. As I said already, Antony doesn’t fear, Garnacho doesn’t fear anyone. Bruno also, Casemiro of course. We have some great personalities.

“Even when you get setbacks, they move on. They carry on and they are resilient. They want to get the result and if you believe in that, even when you concede a cheap penalty you have to go on.

“You can turn around such a game. We know that. When you win a big game like this after 1-0 down, difficult situation, this is good motivation in the season.

Fernandes avoids discussing penalty decision!

22:44 , Matt Verri

“Nothing I can say will change it now but I thought it was a bit soft, both us trying to get the position both of us using our arms but it is what it is.

“I don’t want to make comments. They are always right so I can’t do anything about that.”

Ten Hag hails impact of subs

22:29 , Matt Verri

”That was one of the parts of the gameplan,” Ten Hag tells BT Sport.

“We know if we can bring Antony or Garnacho, you get in the wide areas speed, running behind and dribbles. You get belief.

“They are so brave, both of them. They don’t fear anyone, especially at the Stretford End. They are just running behind and it gives a boost to the team.”

21:59 , Matt Verri

“The belief of the team is always there. The belief of the fan is amazing - they push us through difficult moments.

“The club is built on this - in the past we have done a lot like this result. It’s a great result for us obviously, but now we have a big match on Sunday.”

MAN UNITED ARE THROUGH!

They’ve come from behind on the night to knock Barcelona out - massive result!

United into the last-16 of the Europa League, their brilliant season continues.

21:52 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Alonso throws himself to the floor, grabs the ball and demands the whistle is blown.

He gets his wish, referee gives a free-kick. To Man United for handball. That plan hasn’t worked out at all. Celebrated like a goal by Fernandes in front of the fans.

OFF THE LINE! Lewandowski in behind, beats De Gea but Varane is back to hack it away! INCREDIBLE.

21:51 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: Ten Hag very pumped on up on the touchline. He’s desperate to hear the final whistle.

Barcelona not going long, still as patient as ever. They’re running out of time though.

21:49 , Matt Verri

90 mins: McTominay to the corner! No prizes for guessing what he was brought on for.

De Jong wins it back for Barcelona, he’s leading the counter. Finds Torres, who tries to slide Lewandowski in but it’s a brilliant interception by Varane.

Five minutes added on!

21:46 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Lobbed ball into the box by Barcelona, rolls behind for a goal-kick. Not happening for the visitors.

United will tick away a few more seconds with another change. Rashford strolls off, McTominay on for a bit of extra security.

21:43 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Garnacho skips away from Kounde, great piece of skill. Busquets wisely decides he doesn’t fancy a foot race and just drags Garnacho back, as obvious a yellow card as you’ll ever see.

United teenager has stayed down. Looks to have taken a blow to the face as he fell. He’ll be fine to continue.

21:41 , Matt Verri

82 mins: Xavi looks a bit stunned on the touchline. Alonso is on for Araujo, United continue to tick away the minutes.

Barcelona have had maybe a decent five minutes since the break - nothing more than that. Sensational from the hosts since half-time.

21:38 , Matt Verri

79 mins: That would have sealed it!

Garnacho charging away down the left, they won’t catch him. Rashford free in the middle, low cross in is just behind him though and Busquets can clear.

Rashford with another chance, fires into the side netting. Unfortunate to not get a corner there.

21:35 , Matt Verri

76 mins: It’s a party atmosphere inside Old Trafford now! Barcelona have got to find some sort of response.

For now, the match is being played in their half. United right on top.

GOAL! Man United 2-1 Barcelona | Antony 73'

21:32 , Matt Verri

OLD TRAFFORD ERUPTS!

Garnacho denied, Fred’s effort blocked... Antony scores! Sensational first-time finish into the far corner.

United 4-3 up on aggregate!

21:29 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Much more even game now. Barcelona in control before the break, United dominant in the first 20 minutes of the second-half.

Now it’s right in the balance. Torres is on for Barcelona, replacing Roberto.

21:25 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Ten Hag turns to his bench. Two changes for United.

Dalot coming on at right-back, as Wan-Bissaka trudges off. Garnacho introduced too, replacing Sancho.

Certainly enough space out there to suggest Garnacho can have a real impact.

21:24 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Ball headed out to Kessie, just outside the area and he fires straight at De Gea.

Barcelona starting to get a grip of things again. They should really be in, as Kessie looks up and sees Balde charging forward. Would have been through on goal, but the pass is a poor one and Antony gets back.

21:22 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Martinez, Fred and Casemiro all involved as Raphinha is bullied off the ball. Celebrated like a goal in the stands.

Chance is there on the counter as Casemiro pings the ball towards Rashford, runs through to Ter Stegen.

At the other end, cross comes in and Kounde is free at the back post. Header... tipped over by De Gea!

21:21 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Really poor from Raphinha, that was the first chance Barcelona have had since the break.

Kessie does well to play it out to the winger, and he drives towards the box. Kessie has continued his run, free inside. Raphinha tries to find him but sends it straight out of play.

United break, Antony hammers a shot straight at the mass of gold shirts in front of him. Good from De Jong.

21:18 , Matt Verri

60 mins: De Jong was fouled by Wan Bissaka, and Fernandes then hammered the ball into the Dutchman on the ground.

Roberto didn’t like it, shoved Fernandes and then everyone got involved. Fernandes and Roberto shown yellow cards.

21:17 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Fred skipping away with the ball, just keeps going and going and going, before flicking it down the line for Rashford.

He drives into the box, ball bobbles across the face of goal before De Jong hacks it away. Desperate times.

And now we have a bit of a melee. Fernandes in the middle of it, never one to miss out.

21:14 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Space opens up for Antony, curls an effort at goal from distance. Comfortable for Ter Stegen.

Barcelona struggling to get out of their half, United have to make the most of this spell. Ball over the top for Rashford, too heavy this time.

21:12 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Christensen looks to boot the ball away, thumps it straight into Rashford instead. The forward drives into the box, shot on the stretch from a tight angle is a tame one.

Barcelona look rattled, they’re getting caught on the ball far too often. Wasn’t happening in the first-half.

21:10 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Barcelona have not got going at all since the break, really struggling with the intensity now United have stepped it up. Crowd involved again too now.

Wan-Bissaka not far away from setting Antony away again, he’s getting chances out on the right wing.

21:08 , Matt Verri

49 mins: ‘Not the cleanest of finishes’ was very generous. He’s absolutely shinned it.

Here come United again, Antony is in behind! Christensen does brilliantly, gets back and slides in to deny the winger. Rebound almost falls for Rashford at the back post.

United FLYING.

GOAL! Manchester United 1-1 Barcelona | Fred 47'

21:06 , Matt Verri

DIDN’T TAKE LONG! 3-3 on aggregate!

Fernandes fires the pass in for Fred, one touch to control and enough to beat Ter Stegen. Not the cleanest of finishes but he doesn’t care one bit!

Back underway!

21:04 , Matt Verri

Up and running again at Old Trafford.

Antony on for Man United, replacing Weghorst. Rashford now through the middle.

Scholes on penalty decision

21:00 , Matt Verri

“I think just about, it won’t look like there’s much in it but if you get touched on the arm like that, it just sends you off balance,” Scholes tells BT Sport.

“I don’t think he’s cheated one bit, I can understand why the referee’s given it.”

The run continues for Lewandowski!

20:51 , Matt Verri

HT: Man United 0-1 Barcelona (2-3 agg)

20:49 , Matt Verri

And that is half-time.

Barcelona were well on top at the end of the half, United just about make it to the break only one goal down.

Plenty for Ten Hag to consider at the break - his side have really struggled going forward.

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

20:46 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Barcelona unable to make anything of the corner, bit of a mess after they take it short.

Ten Hag in deep conversation with his coaching team on the bench. Got to think there will be changes at the break.

De Gea with a horror show at the back, passes it straight to Roberto! Edge of the box, falls for Kessie and Casemiro throws himself in front of the shot. Dear me - awful from De Gea.

20:44 , Matt Verri

43 mins: United could do with half-time here, starting to look a bit ragged. De Jong and Busquets playing round them in midfield, and Weghorst then gives away a really silly free-kick just over 20 yards out.

Fairly wide, so you’d imagine it will be a cross. It is indeed from De Jong, flicked behind for a corner by Casemiro.

20:41 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Kessie allowed to drive inside and play a ball out to Kounde, who has loads of space on the right.

Lays the ball back to Raphinha, one-two with Roberto and then a wild effort from the former Leeds winger. Just about stayed inside the stadium.

20:39 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Casemiro boots a brilliant pass out wide to Rashford, and he can run at Kounde. Again Barcelona get enough bodies back though, not letting Rashford get into the game.

Neither side getting anything like they joy they had in attacking areas last week.

20:36 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Barcelona with a better spell, but they lose it and United can break.

Sancho looks up and has Fernandes to his right, looks to play his team-mate in. Far too much on the pass though - Fernandes’ look back at Sancho makes it fairly clear what he thought about that.

20:33 , Matt Verri

32 mins: United seeing plenty of the ball at the back and in midfield, struggling to get Rashford and Sancho involved though.

Here is Rashford, looks to fire a ball in behind for Weghorst. The Dutchman not quick enough to get on the end of that.

20:31 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Fred whips a cross in, nobody really there in a red shirt. Ter Stegen could claim but opts to punch instead.

Brief threat of a Barcelona counter, but Martinez is there again to mop up. Makes such a big difference when he’s in the side.

20:28 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Referee has had a word with Xavi, and he’s now over to speak to Ten Hag. United boss furious after Martinez is penalised right in front of him.

Barcelona nearly in from that free-kick, Kessie in space driving into the box. Martinez does really well to get across, this time legally. Wins a free-kick himself.

20:25 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Ridiculously calm from Busquets in midfield, just flicking his way through the United press. Raphinha has the door slammed shut out wide though, Martinez not letting him through.

United are persisting with Sancho as a No10, with Fernandes out wide. Sancho yet to really have a kick.

20:23 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Might have been a riot if that was giving.

Ball fired into Lewandowski, who optimistically tumbles to the floor and looks up at the referee. Definitely not.

Aside from the goal, Barcelona have offered very little in attack so far.

20:21 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Shaw down on the edge of the Barcelona box, collided with Araujo. Referee not interested.

Crowd getting increasingly frustrated with the officiating. No need for United to panic - as we saw last week they can create chances against this Barcelona defence.

GOAL! Man United 0-1 Barcelona | Robert Lewandowski 18'

20:19 , Matt Verri

LEWANDOWSKI JUST ABOUT CONVERTS!

Had to wait a long time for that. Run-up takes an age too, stutters his way to the ball. De Gea gets a big hand on it, can’t keep it out though.

Barcelona 3-2 up on aggregate.

PENALTY BARCELONA!

20:16 , Matt Verri

WOW.

That looked very soft. Cross headed out to Balde on the edge of the box, who tries to turn Fernandes. Gets a bit of a tug on the arm, falls to the ground and get the decision.

Big, big moment.

20:15 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Rashford with his first chance of the night to run with the ball, wins a corner for United.

Taken short, Fred eventually whips it into the box and Barcelona clear the danger.

Back out to Shaw, who lays the ball back to Rashford. Looks to take on Kounde, Frenchman is up to the task though. Great tackle.

20:14 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Martinez launches himself about 20 feet in the air, gets the free-kick.

Kessie slid the pass through to Roberto, the Barcelona man slides in to try and get there. Martinez clears the ball and then does everything in his power to take the contact. Job done.

20:12 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Clumsy from Fred, as Balde skips away from him. Brazilian brings down the left-back in a dangerous position.

Maybe just too far out for a shot. Raphinha plays it into the box, United hack it away.

20:10 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Casemiro shoved over, this time the whistle does go. Up come the United centre-backs for the free-kick.

Fernandes clips the ball into the box, aimed towards Weghorst but he can’t flick it on. United stay on the attack, Wan-Bissaka of all people skipping past his man on the left wing.

Too much on the cross though, sliced out of play.

20:08 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Great tackle from Wan-Bissaka on Roberto, United can break. Comes to Fernandes out on the right.

He looks to slide a pass through to Wan-Bissaka who had flown forward on the underlap, Balde reads it though.

20:06 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Raphinha then tries his luck from distance, not a million miles away.

Early signs are we’re in for another thrilling 90 minutes. Plenty of space out there for both sides in forward areas.

Fred pushes right up, intercepts Balde’s pass out from the back. Barcelona taking risks and getting caught. Rashford down on the edge of the box, referee waves away the appeals.

20:04 , Matt Verri

3 mins: MASSIVE CHANCE!

Fernandes is clean through on goal, he can’t believe the space he has. Looks up for a pass, decides the shot is the best option but it’s straight at Ter Stegen.

Had to score. Casemiro pass cut Barcelona open, Balde absolutely nowhere.

20:03 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Kounde has been left in a heap out wide, got caught by Shaw. Painful one.

Then gets hit by the ball as Barcelona kick it out for him to get some treatment. Not the start Kounde was dreaming of.

KICK-OFF!

20:00 , Matt Verri

We’re underway at Old Trafford!

There will be a winner tonight. 90 minutes, extra-time, penalties... whatever it takes!

Here we go!

19:57 , Matt Verri

Incredible atmosphere at Old Trafford, fans know just how big a match this is for the club.

A win would launch them into the Carabao Cup final with maximum confidence, defeat could potentially start to derail things.

Teams are out onto the pitch!

Who United could face next

19:53 , Matt Verri

Should Man United get past Barcelona tonight, they’ll be in the last-16 draw. That takes place at 11am GMT tomorrow morning.

Erik ten Hag’s team would be able face almost any of the seeded teams, which are the sides who topped their groups during the Europa League group stage earlier in this season.

However, they cannot face Arsenal because teams from the same nation cannot be drawn against each other until the quarter-final stage.

Potential opponents:

Union Saint-Gilloise

SC Freiburg

Ferencvaros

Feyenoord

Real Betis

Real Sociedad

Fenerbahce

Not long now!

19:46 , Matt Verri

Kick-off coming up in just under 15 minutes now.

Man United on an incredible run at Old Trafford, haven’t been beaten since Real Sociedad snuck a narrow 1-0 win at the start of September.

Since then, 17 matches, 15 wins, two draws. No defeats. Not too bad.

Tributes to John Motson

19:40 , Matt Verri

Manchester United are paying tribute to John Motson tonight, following the death of the legendary commentator at the age of 77.

Motson’s family confirmed that the former BBC broadcaster and voice of Match of the Day died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday.

Popularly known as “Motty”, Motson covered 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships and 29 FA Cup finals during a distinguished 50-year career with the BBC.

He worked on Match of the Day from 1971, commentating on almost 2,500 televised games until he left the organisation in 2018 to take up a radio role at talkSPORT. Motson became an OBE in 2001 for services to sports broadcasting.

“It is with great sadness we announce that John Motson OBE died peacefully in his sleep today,” said a statement from Motson’s family.

No away goals rule

19:34 , Matt Verri

Reminder that the away goals rule is not in place.

That means despite the two goals Man United scored at the Camp Nou, a 1-0 win, for example, would still be enough for Barcelona to go through.

Would be a surprise if either side kept a clean sheet, judging by what we saw a week ago!

Ten Hag: We have to give our best

19:29 , Matt Verri

“We all want to play big games, big matches. When we were young, we dreamed of it.

“We are really enjoying it, we are really looking forward and enjoying it. We have to give our best.

“It is not about (us getting) credit, it is about trophies. The next focus is always on the next game. We have to keep in the same mindset that every day we want to give a better version of ourselves.”

45 minutes to go!

Xavi backs Sheikh Jassim for United takeover

19:09 , Matt Verri

Xavi says he knows prospective Man United owner Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani well and believes he would do a “good job” at Old Trafford.

Last Friday, the wealthy Qatari banker confirmed he had made an offer to buy the Premier League club as the Glazer family consider selling the club.

Xavi ended his playing career in Qatar playing for Al Sadd between 2015 and 2019, then took his first steps in management at the Doha club before taking over at Barcelona two years ago.

The Barca boss was asked for his thoughts on state-owned clubs in the wake of Sheikh Jassim’s offer for United.

He said: “I have a good relationship with the Sheikh and he’s a serious, responsible person and I think he would do a good job.

“I know him so well. I think he’s a very good person with responsibility, serious. I think it would be a very good option for United.”

Changes for both sides

18:56 , Matt Verri

Sancho gets the nod for Man United, with Garnacho having to settle for a place on the bench. It’s a midfield pairing of Casemiro and Fred again, with Sabitzer among the substitutes.

Martinez returns from suspension in defence alongside Varane, meaning Shaw shifts back over to left-back.

As for Barcelona, Busquets and Roberto come into midfield with Pedri and Gavi out.

Balde starts at left-back, with both Alonso and Alba on the bench. Lewandowski leading the line as ever.

This is the start of a huge run of fixtures coming up for Man United.

Their Europa League ambitions are on the line tonight, before they look to end the club’s trophy drought in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday against Newcastle.

It’s then an FA Cup fifth-round clash against West Ham, before a trip to face Liverpool in the Premier League.

Xavi: Ten Hag has got the best out of United

18:14 , Matt Verri

Xavi has been full of praise for Erik ten Hag in the build-up to this match, drawing attention to four Man United players in particular that he believes have improved under the Dutchman.

“He is very good, I like him a lot,” Xavi told The Times when asked about Ten Hag.

“He has built a team and is getting the best out of all his players. That speaks well of him. Tactically, he is very good and he handles the dressing room very well.

“He is getting all the talent out of his players. You see Sancho, Rashford, the Portuguese guy [Fernandes]. And look how Fred is playing.”

Fresh look for Garnacho

18:00 , Matt Verri

It’s been a battle between Garnacho and Sancho in recent weeks for a place in the starting XI.

The teenager got the nod over the weekend against Leicester, though was replaced at half-time as Ten Hag turned to Sancho.

Whether it’s a chnage in fortunes tonight for Garnacho remains to be seen, but it is a change in hair colour!

Standard Sport prediction

17:54 , Matt Verri

The Red Devils came close to snatching a win in a highly-entertaining first leg and the two teams simply cannot be separated in their attacking prowess or their suspect defending.

Prepare for it to go all the way - and remember, no away goals.

A 2-2 draw, Man United to win on penalties.

Travelled in numbers!

Barcelona team news

17:44 , Matt Verri

For Barcelona, midfield duo Pedri and Gavi are both missing through injury and suspension respectively, while Ousmane Dembele will sit out due to a hamstring problem.

As a result, Sergi Roberto is competing to start alongside the fit-again Sergio Busquets, Franck Kessie and Frenkie de Jong if Barcelona pick a four-man midfield.

Alternatively, one of Ferran Torres or Ansu Fati could start in place of Dembele in the final third.

The hugely experienced Busquets missed the first leg but returned to the squad for the weekend win over Cadiz and has travelled to Manchester.

Predicted Barcelona XI (4-3-3): Ter Stegen; Kounde, Araujo, Christensen, Alba; Busquets, De Jong, Kessie; Raphinha, Lewandowski, Torres.

Man United team news

17:37 , Matt Verri

Antony and Harry Maguire are both fit again for United, while Lisandro Martinez and Marcel Sabitzer are free from suspension.

Anthony Martial is still out, meaning Erik ten Hag will have to decide whether to persist with Wout Weghorst as an attacking midfielder behind Marcus Rashford, or move the Dutchman back up front.

Both Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek are long-term absentees in midfield.

Predicted Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Martinez, Shaw; Casemiro, Fred; Fernandes, Sancho, Rashford; Weghorst.
