Manchester United vs Crystal Palace LIVE! Carabao Cup result, match stream, latest reaction and updates today

Manchester United vs Crystal Palace - LIVE!

Casemiro scored one and provided another as Manchester United began their defence of the Carabao Cup with a straightforward victory against lifeless Crystal Palace. A lot has happened in the seven months since securing the first trophy of the Erik ten Hag era - and the Red Devils’ first silverware in six years - against Newcastle at Wembley.

Casemiro opened the scoring under the arch and found the net again in Tuesday’s 3-0 third-round triumph against Palace as United look to put their poor start to the season behind them. There were a combined 14 changes for an Old Trafford meeting that will be repeated in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, when Eagles boss Roy Hodgson will demand a vastly improved display.

United kept Palace at arm’s length in a one-sided first half that brought a pair of quickfire goals shortly after injury had ended Dean Henderson’s debut against his former club. First good team play ended with Alejandro Garnacho turning in Diogo Dalot’s cutback, before Casemiro headed home his fourth goal of the campaign from the returning Mason Mount’s corner. Anthony Martial rifled home from the Brazil international’s cross in the 55th minute as United rubber-stamped their place in Wednesday’s fourth-round draw by following up their much-needed win at Burnley.

22:52 , Matt Verri

Manchester United made a comfortable start to their Carabao Cup defence as they eased to a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

Victory in last season’s final against Newcastle ended United’s six-year wait for silverware, and while the competition is far from the priority for Erik ten Hag this term, a routine win would have been a relief after a difficult start to the campaign.

Alejandro Garnacho and Casemiro scored in the space of six first-half minutes, before Anthony Martial netted after the break to ensure the result was put beyond doubt before the hour mark.

Crystal Palace ratings

Chris Richards — 7

Made one outstanding tackle to deny United when it was only 1-0. One of few Palace players who were not overran by the hosts.

Tyrick Mitchell — 5

Having a much better season this term than last, but not one of Palace’s better performers at Old Trafford.

Man United player ratings

Harry Maguire — 7

On a rare start for the club, passed assuredly. Filled in at left-back when Amrabat decided to dart elsewhere.

Sofyan Amrabat — 8

What a full debut from the Moroccan. Played nominally at left-back in the first half and central midfield in the second, but in truth he was everywhere.

Some performance!

22:03 , Matt Verri

That’s where it all went wrong...

21:59 , Matt Verri

FT: Man United 3-0 Crystal Palace

21:56 , Matt Verri

That’ll do for Man United.

Their Carabao Cup defence is up and running, as easy a night as they’ve had all season.

Goals from Garnacho, Casemiro and Martial - they’ll feel they could have scored more than three too.

21:53 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Three minutes added on.

Palace would snap your hand off if you offered them the chance to end the match now.

21:51 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Hojlund tries to bundle his way through the Palace defence, no room for him though. Has to settle for a corner.

Can Palace defend this one a bit better? Ish. Johnstone punches it out, Lindelof fires a brilliant effort back at goal. Parried out, Garnacho then denied from distance too.

Dom Smith at Old Trafford

21:49 , Matt Verri

Routine stuff for United now, who are dominating the ball and passing the ball round and through Palace. Home and hosed

21:47 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Van de Beek a bit too keen to win the ball back, Eze wins the free-kick.

The Palace man then plays a lovely ball through to Mateta, drills the ball low at goal and Onana just about keeps it out - not convincing at all.

Gets away with it though.

21:44 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Riedewald seems to have picked up an injury, just what Palace need. Ozoh on for the final ten minutes.

Pellistri and Hojlund combine nicely, the former gets a shot away from the edge of the box but it’s blocked.

21:41 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Gore has made an impression since coming on, working really hard off the ball.

Helps when you’re playing right in front of you rmanager I imagine, he charges across to head the ball out of play about three feet away from Ten Hag.

21:37 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Martial’s night is over, a succesful one after his smart finish.

Hojlund on in his place, 15 minutes or so to get himself on the scoresheet tonight.

21:34 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Great save from Johnstone!

Again Palace so poor at defending the corner, ball whipped in and Evans allowed to direct his header at goal, Johnstone does so well to react in time and keep the ball out.

21:33 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Van de Beek coming on for his first United appearance of the season. Hannibal off, just about made it through tonight without being sent-off.

Big ovation for Van de Beek from the United fans, and a big hug and smile for Hannibal from Ten Hag.

Dom Smith at Old Trafford

21:31 , Matt Verri

We’ve had a shot”, the Crystal Palace fans cry. It wasn’t a very good one. But then Mateta get a chance and fires at Onana. Decent save.

Better from Palace.

21:31 , Matt Verri

67 mins: There is a shot for the visitors - wild from Clyne!

Something at least. Been a very, very quiet night for Onana. Barely seen him. Just what he needed after being in the spotlight recently.

Talk about a jinx - he’s suddenly forced into action! Mateta in the box, low strike at goal and Onana sticks out a leg to deny him.

21:27 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Palace still haven’t had a single shot tonight.

That doesn’t change here either, Hughes crowded out wide on the right as Gore gets across and wins the ball back for United.

Great ball, great finish!

21:26 , Matt Verri

21:23 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Here are two more Palace changes. Eze on for Schlupp, Hughes replaces Doucoure on the hour mark.

Ten Hag turns to his bench too. Evans gets a bit cheer, replacing Varane. Even bigger one for Amrabat, who is off as Gore is introduced.

21:22 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Eze looks like he’ll be coming on shortly for Palace - just the three goals needed, Ebere.

This match has gone for Palace, their best bet might be starting to think about Saturday’s match back here in the Premier League.

Dom Smith at Old Trafford

21:19 , Matt Verri

A goal finished deftly by Martial but made so beautifully by Casemiro, whose lofted ball was magnificent. Palace can do little else but try to keep the score down now.

United’s squad players have been ruthless on their big night out.

GOAL! Man United 3-0 Crystal Palace | Anthony Martial 55'

21:18 , Matt Verri

That seals it!

Casemiro involved again, pinging a lovely ball to the back post. Clyne caught out, Martial getting in behind him and finishing really well from a tight angle.

21:15 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Hannibal needs to be careful - a lot more careful than he’s being.

Made a foul when already on a yellow before the break and he’s just committed another one, tripping Ayew up. The Palace forward keen to make that point to the referee.

21:14 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Not a huge amount of pace in the match, nor any sign that Palace are going to push to try and get themselves back in the match.

Still sitting back in their shape, happy to let the United defenders knock the ball around.

Dom Smith at Old Trafford

21:12 , Matt Verri

Dalot really has been excellent. Wins the ball, and bombs forward.

Amrabat not playing half-bad either, especially now that he’s moved into his favoured central midfield role.

21:10 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Ten Hag just emerges from the tunnel - unacceptable from a man who likes people to stick to the rules.

Amrabat has moved into midfield, where he was pretty much playing anyway. Lindelof at left-back.

Back underway!

21:08 , Matt Verri

Changes at the break for both sides.

Guehi is on for Palace, replacing Rak-Sakyi. Not exactly like-for-like. Nor is United’s... Mount off, Lindelof on.

Casemiro scores... again

21:04 , Matt Verri

Garnacho with opening goal...

20:59 , Matt Verri

Dom Smith at Old Trafford

20:53 , Matt Verri

Tough first half for Crystal Palace; it just didn’t fall their way.

Dean Henderson, making his debut against the club whose academy he joined aged 14, was injured on 20 minutes, and almost immediately after his replacement Sam Johnstone entered the pitch, Manchester United took the lead. They soon doubled it, and have been in cruise control ever since.

Many in red are doing a pretty good job of auditioning for more Premier League action in the near future. The hosts very much in charge, both in the scoreline and the complexion of the match.

HT: Man United 2-0 Crystal Palace

20:51 , Matt Verri

And that’s half-time, easy as you like for Man United so far.

Goals from Garnacho and Casemiro, Palace have been unable to lay a glove on the hosts. United dominating possession, and every other statistic really.

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

20:47 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Five minutes added on, most of that down to Henderson’s injury.

Dalot tries his luck from miles out, encouraged to do so by the crowd. Would be best if they didn’t next time.

Dom Smith at Old Trafford

20:45 , Matt Verri

Jordan Ayew was the most fouled player in the entire Premier League last season, and really does seem to have inherited from Wilfried Zaha that knack of inviting nibbles and bites from his markers.

He has won three fouls already for Palace.

20:44 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Palace at least seeing a bit more of the ball in the last few minutes - mostly in their own half.

Holding tries to play it through the lines, Palace lose it and Schlupp brings down Hannibal to halt any hopes of a United counter.

20:42 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Huge cheers as Amrabat gets his body in the way to halt Rak-Sakyi’s progress and see the ball out of play.

Palace still happy to slow things down when they get free-kicks and throw-ins, no real urgency from them in trying to get back into this game.

Dom Smith at Old Trafford

20:40 , Matt Verri

Manchester United playing with plenty of width. Dalot and Pellistri have been particularly lively down the right flank.

Palace in a decent defensive shape off the ball but very much playing catch-up every time United spread wide at the moment.

20:39 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Amrabat really has made an immediate difference tonight.

At left-back... sort of. That’s probably the position he’s been in least, drifting all over the pitch and controlling things. Very impressive display.

20:34 , Matt Verri

33 mins: This has been Mount’s best performance in a United shirt by a mile.

Lots of nice touches already, he’s looking a lot more confident now than we saw before his injury. Helps that United have been much improved on the ball.

Palace struggling to get a touch at the moment, let alone a chance.

20:32 , Matt Verri

31 mins: United playing a very fluid system at the back.

Amrabat spending a lot of time in the middle, with Maguire shifting over to cover him at left-back. Yes, you heard.

Dom Smith at Old Trafford

20:31 , Matt Verri

What an exceptional tackle it was by Chris Richards to deny Pellistri a second from a flowing United move.

But they get their second through a different source as Mount’s corner is headed in beautifully by Casemiro. Not great defending from Palace from the corner.

2-0 now and a mountain to climb already for the Eagles.

20:30 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Hannibal the first United player into the book tonight.

Ayew breaking away for Palace, until he gets his heels clipped fairly cynically. United man tries his best to complain - not sure about what.

GOAL! Man United 2-0 Crystal Palace | Casemiro 27'

20:28 , Matt Verri

That was coming!

United completely dominant since the first goal and now they have a second.

Far too easy, Mount swings the corner in and Casemiro is allowed to power the header beyond Johnstone.

20:27 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Sensational challenge from Richards, just as United look certain to make it 2-0.

Martial wiped out, advantage played though with the hosts still on the attack. Mount flicks the ball through to Pellistri, clean through on goal but Richards slides in to deny him just as the United man was about to get the shot away.

20:25 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Palace need to be very careful here.

Dalot completely free on the right, this time he goes for goal himself and Johnstone parries it straight out. Luckily for him, nobody in a red shirt can get on the end of it in time.

United threatening to take complete charge of this now.

Dom Smith at Old Trafford

20:25 , Matt Verri

Blimey. That all happened a bit quickly didn’t it?

Johnstone is no sooner into the fray than picking the ball out of the net as Garnacho slides United in front from Dalot’s excellent pull-back. 1-0 to the home side.

GOAL! Man United 1-0 Crystal Palace | Alejandro Garnacho 21'

20:24 , Matt Verri

Tough introduction for Johnstone!

Dalot does brilliantly in the build-up, makes the run in behind and get to the byline.

Cuts the ball back, falls to Garnacho and on the stretch he turns the ball low into the back of the net. United take the lead.

Dom Smith at Old Trafford

20:21 , Matt Verri

Well after all the build-up, tough for Dean Henderson to be substituted with an injury.

Didn’t look too knocked by it as Sam Johnstone replaced him, but he no doubt will have been. This was his big chance to stake a claim to replace Johnstone as Palace’s No1.

Palace fans already chanting “Super Sam Johnstone in goal”.

20:20 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Gutting for Henderson.

He gets some treatment, injury potentially to his thigh. Johnstone is getting ready and Henderson is reluctantly having to trudge off.

His night is over, not even 20 minutes on his Old Trafford return. Really frustrating debut.

20:18 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Just the one shot so far from United, that poor effort from Amrabat.

Palace haven’t had any - more of a concern to them will be that Henderson seems to be limping. The goalkeeper launched the ball forward, and has looked in a fair bit of pain since.

Dom Smith at Old Trafford

20:14 , Matt Verri

Bright start from Sofyan Amrabat.

The Manchester United summer signing is a midfielder by trade, but is filling in well at left-back so far. Has already demonstrated his passing range with a couple of lofted crossfield balls.

20:14 , Matt Verri

12 mins: United continue to knock the ball around under no real pressure, but they’re yet to turn the possession dominance into anything in the way of clear-cut chances.

Varane makes a burst forward, Pellistri’s pass is cut out though. This match has not got going at all.

20:10 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Really good from Maguire, positioned well in the middle to clear the ball with Mateta lurking behind him, waiting for a tap-in.

United then give away a free-kick in a good position though, Riedewald standing over it. Clipped towards Holding at the back post, headed away and United clear the ball up the pitch.

20:09 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Basically nothing has happened so far, so full marks to Amrabat for trying to change that.

Ball played across to him, 25 yards out and he decides to throw the kitchen sink at the ball. Maximum power, minimum accuracy. Wild.

Dom Smith at Old Trafford

20:06 , Matt Verri

Chris Richards has had rotten luck with fitness since joining Palace last summer, but has started well here, snuffing out anything remotely close to developing into danger.

20:05 , Matt Verri

4 mins: No surprise to see Amrabat moving well into midfield when United have the ball, that’s where he’s most comfortable.

Also no surprise to see Palace sitting off, deep in their shape. Not any real desire for them to press and try and win the ball back off United.

20:04 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Mateta leading the line for Palace tonight and he wins an early free-kick for his side, as Varane climbs all over him.

Low-key opening minutes of the match. Visitors seeing plenty of the ball, they’ve made a pretty confident start.

KICK-OFF!

20:01 , Matt Verri

We’re up and running in the Carabao Cup!

20:00 , Matt Verri

Players are out onto the pitch at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag has insisted pre-match that Harry Maguire has nothing to prove tonight - the centre-back could though really do with a quiet, uneventful night here.

Here we go!

19:55 , Matt Verri

Teams will be in the tunnel any minute, kick-off coming up in just a few minutes time.

United went all the way in the Carabao Cup last season, ending a six-year spell without a trophy. Another deep cup run, with a trip to Wembley early next year, could help lift the mood after a relatively frustrating start to United’s season.

More from the Palace boss...

19:50 , Matt Verri

Dom Smith at Old Trafford

19:48 , Matt Verri

Really exciting to see 20-year-old winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi starting tonight.

Charlton fans will tell you he was an exceptional player to have on loan last season, and his goals contributions (15 goals in League One) weren’t bad either.

Palace supporters will hope he impresses at the so-called Theatre of Dreams tonight.

Hodgson expecting tough night

19:44 , Matt Verri

“We are talking about one of the two biggest football clubs in the world,” the Palace boss said this week.

“So even though they might not be firing on all cylinders, they’re still going to look at a bench probably which has cost several hundred million.

“It will be a very difficult game, but it will be a great experience, those players who haven’t had a chance could get the chance. It will be good for them to show what they can do at the very top level.”

Ten Hag explains Amrabat at full-back

19:36 , Matt Verri

“Where the manager needs him, he will play. He will do the job. That’s who Sofyan is.”

“We had to be able to make choices from a tactical perspective. Amrabat is a midfielder, but he’s previously played as a full-back a while ago. At Fiorentina, he was really settled, for Morocco, he was the big man at the World Cup.

“He was one of the best players at the World Cup in the position as a holding midfielder, but he can play there [full-back] and he’s a warrior, he’ll fight for the badge. He’s someone who will play where his manager needs him.”

Familiar foes...

19:23 , Matt Verri

Crystal Palace are going to get very used to Old Trafford over the next few days.

They’ll be back here on Saturday afternoon in the Premier League, as United host them in quick succession.

Erik ten Hag’s side have only lost once at home in the past 13 months - not a great side to travel to twice in four days.

New faces could have busy night!

19:17 , Matt Verri

Changes from both sides

19:12 , Matt Verri

Harry Maguire and Mason Mount return for Man United tonight, while Sofyan Amrabat is handed a full debut. That looks as though it’s going to come at full-back, due to the defensive injuries facing Erik ten Hag.

Chances too for Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony Martial, as Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford are rested.

As for Palace, Dean Henderson does indeed start against his former club, while Rob Holding starts at centre-back. Ebere Eze and Marc Guehi among those on the bench.

We’re about to find out whether Henderson actually is starting at Old Trafford.

All the team news coming up in the next few minutes, will be interesting to see just how seriously the two managers are going to take the Carabao Cup this season.

Huge night for Henderson!

18:49 , Matt Verri

When Dean Henderson made the decision to leave Manchester United this summer, he was surely not expecting his next career appearance to come against them at Old Trafford.

The goalkeeper is in line to make his Palace debut against his former club in the Carabao Cup tonight.

Henderson joined Crystal Palace in a £20million summer deal and this game will be his first chance to stake his claim to earn the No1 spot from Sam Johnstone.

How United lifted the trophy

18:32 , Matt Verri

It was a successful trip to Wembley last season.

Man United took on Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final and ended their six-year wait for a trophy, with Casemiro in particularly extremely impressive.

Here’s some highlights from that clash...

Hodgson: I can’t attack Carabao Cup

18:25 , Matt Verri

Fair to say Roy Hodgson wasn’t exactly in a hugely upbeat mood in his pre-match press conference.

Faced with a growing injury list, the Palace boss made it clear that he will name a weaker side tonight than he would have liked.

“I can’t attack the Carabao Cup as I intended to do because I don’t have any players,” Hodgson said.

“I’m worried about [Odsonne] Edouard’s hamstring. At the moment when I find out a player is out for three weeks, I’m relieved it’s not three months.”

Eagles are in place...

18:18 , Matt Verri

Long way back for Sancho

18:12 , Matt Verri

Jadon Sancho‘s future at Manchester United looks bleaker than ever following reports the forward has now been banned from all first-team facilities at the club - even the team dining areas.

Sancho has been exiled from the first-team squad after accusing manager Erik ten Hag of lying about the reasons for being omitted from the matchday squad to face Arsenal earlier in September.

Ten Hag said Sancho had not performed well in training, but Sancho hit back on X, formerly known as Twitter, claiming that was untrue and that he was being used as a “scapegoat”.

Sancho has since deleted the post but is no closer to a return to the squad. The Daily Mirror report that Sancho, who is training with the academy, has been barred from using all first-team facilities at the club’s Carrington training ground.

That includes eating with the senior squad, meaning Sancho now dines with the academy players.

Standard Sport prediction

17:58 , Matt Verri

Neither team has really got going so far this season so we’re not expecting a cup classic at the Theatre of Dreams.

Crystal Palace have in the past enjoyed their trips to Old Trafford but, with another visit to the same stadium coming this weekend, the expected changes could will make the job much tougher. United should have enough.

Man United to win, 2-0 in normal time

Crystal Palace team news

17:51 , Matt Verri

Palace are also juggling a number of injuries, with the likes of Michael Olise, Matheus Franca and Jefferson Lerma all still sidelines. Jean-Philippe Mateta should come in to the starting lineup, with Odsonne Edouard a major doubt with a tight hamstring.

Roy Hodgson will make plenty of changes, meaning Rob Holding, Nathaniel Clyne and Jairo Riedewald could make up quite the second-string defence. Dean Henderson will be making his debut against his former club.

Man United team news

17:45 , Matt Verri

Manchester United hope to have Harry Maguire and Sergio Reguilon fit for the game. The centre-back has been nursing a knock, while the loanee was withdrawn late on against Burnley due to illness.

Sofyan Amrabat could make his full debut in midfield, but the game is likely to come too soon for Lisandro Martinez but Mason Mount could make his first start since before the international break. Altay Bayindir is pushing to make his debut in goal.

The likes of Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes may be rested, meaning Anthony Martial could come in and be supported by young duo Facundo Pellistri and Alejandro Garnacho.
