Newcastle managed to keep relatively injury-free last season, but now their fitness issues are mounting and may leave Eddie Howe needing to make some tough selection decisions as he plots changes tonight.

"You just have to roll with the punches, absorb the hits and that's what we're going to try to do. It's not ideal for us, especially with the season to last year - it's a totally different feel," he said this week.

"We're not in that position now so we're going to need everybody in the squad to step up. The key message is everyone has to give a bit more. To not use our squad (on Tuesday) would be really foolish.

"(Last season) whet the appetite for us, we want this on a more regular basis, we're determined to get back there. That's the challenge for us - can we? Tomorrow will dictate what we do in this competition.

The thousands of floral tributes and memorabilia left around the 'Holy Trinity' statue of Charlton, George Best and Denis Law at Old Trafford has been moved to the nearby Old Trafford Museum, where it will sit alongside tributes to the legendary Sir Matt Busby.

United announced yesterday that Charlton's funeral service would take place on Monday November 13, with the procession set to pass by Old Trafford en route to Manchester Cathedral in order to give fans a chance to say a final farewell.

A coroner ruled earlier today that United and England icon Charlton died as the result of an accidental fall in a nursing home, where he had been receiving respite care for dementia.

The issue of Varane being benched in favour of starting the 35-year-old Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire for the inevitable humbling by City led to a tetchy exchange between the under-pressure Ten Hag and a reporter on Sunday.

"They played very well, I think, the centre," Ten Hag said. "With Onana they played a very good game. Just what I expected.

"You know they will come pressures and no one can actually be surprised. I said it from the beginning, I need the players on the left side who can make angles and also to step in and, especially against City, with the side they press us you have to step in to get the press on them and I think they did this very well."

Pressed again on the tactical reasons behind Varane's omission, a miffed Ten Hag added: "I said it from the start that I was here and I just explained it to the question, so I have to explain again? Sorry, I said why.

"When you face City, they will go up to press and then to play with Rapha and Maguire over the left, that can give problems and then you end up only kicking long balls.

"He is for me, better on the right, Harry, especially against teams pressing high and second is you have to step in over that side and that was our tactic: to step in over (Julian) Alvarez and get Sofyan (Amrabat) higher to get press on their build-up and that's why."
