Manchester United vs Sevilla - LIVE!

Manchester United were left stunned as Sevilla somehow earned a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final tie.

The stage was set for Erik ten Hag‘s side to enjoy a comfortable night at Old Trafford when Marcel Sabitzer‘s first-half brace put United in complete control, and they were inches away from a third goal, and one that would have effectively put the tie to bed, when Antony struck the woodwork after the break. As it turned out, they were at that point half an hour away from trudging off the pitch struggling to comprehend how they will not be taking a lead to Spain for next week’s second leg, Sevilla producing a late comeback with the help of a helping head and foot.

Jesus Navas got in behind Tyrell Malacia with five minutes remaining, looked to fire the ball across the face of goal and instead found the United left-back’s outstretched foot, diverting it past beating David de Gea. And a second own goal followed in stoppage-time, this time Harry Maguire the reluctant entry on the scoresheet as Youssef En-Nesyri’s header deflected off him and rolled into the bottom corner with De Gea wrong-footed to leave Old Trafford shell-shocked.

Injury update from the United boss...

Thursday 13 April 2023 22:49 , Matt Verri

“With the injuries we lose the rhythm of the game,” Ten Hag told BT Sport.

“We had to make some subs with injuries, like Rapha at half-time. Also Anthony Martial, we had to sub him because it’s his first start. Antony as well and Bruno, because they were [risks] for a second booking.

“Then we lose control, unlucky moments and then another one with Licha Martinez. Then we are with ten. We conceded two own goals. Bad luck, we have to deal with it. We have to learn to kill the game.”

He added: “With Licha Martinez, he drops out after a moment where there was no opponent. It doesn’t look that great. We have to wait. I can’t say in this moment, same with Rapha. It’s an injury complaint [he’s had] over the last couple of weeks, so we have to see how it is now.”

Huge concern for United....

Thursday 13 April 2023 22:22 , Matt Verri

Chaotic conclusion!

Thursday 13 April 2023 22:07 , Matt Verri

FT: Man United 2-2 Sevilla

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:58 , Matt Verri

That is absolutely crazy.

United looked like they were going to finish it off, pushing for a three-goal lead, and yet it’s all level.

Sevilla with the advantage you’d have to say, heading back to Spain!

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:55 , Matt Verri

90+4 mins: It’s actually a Maguire own goal.

Two on goals, United cannot believe this. Sevilla somehow going back to Spain level as it stands.

GOAL! Man United 2-2 Sevilla | Youssef En-Nesyri 90+2'

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:53 , Matt Verri

UNBELIEVABLE!

The ball is whipped in, En-Nesyri wins the header again. Bounces off Maguire, wrong-foots De Gea and rolls into the opposite corner. Incredible.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:51 , Matt Verri

90 mins: United down to ten with Martinez off, and they are holding on for dear life. All Sevilla, as De Gea is forced into a good save.

Six minutes added on! Plenty of time left.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:47 , Matt Verri

86 mins: May well go down as a Malacia own goal.

Another big concern for Martinez, he’s gone down off the ball and has his head in his heads. Can’t put any weight on that foot.

He’s coming straight off.

GOAL! Man United 2-1 Sevilla | David de Gea OG’ 84'

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:45 , Matt Verri

GAME ON!

Wow. Huge moment. Ball clipped to the back post, Malacia switches off and Navas is in. Fires it across the face of goal, deflects off Malacia, hits De Gea and into the back of the net.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:43 , Matt Verri

82 mins: HUGE CHANCE.

United should be 3-0 up. Pellistri keeps the ball in play, Sabitzer flicks it on. Weghorst six yards out, Elanga is free but he lays it off to Malacia instead.

Takes too long to shoot, eventually it’s blocked behind for a corner.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:41 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Antony coming off for United, handshake with Acuna on his way off. They’ve had fun.

Pellistri gets on for a rare appearance, he’ll have ten minutes or so to impress.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:41 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Malacia flashes a cross into the six-yard box, Weghorst very nearly gets there at the back post.

All while Montiel lies on the ground pretending to be hurt. Again. And now Navas is down after slipping, may well have jarred his knee.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:36 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Antony and Acuna continue to clash, both laughing in each other’s faces as they have another barging match. One of them will definitely lose their head at this rate...

Rakitic meanwhile tries his luck from miles out. Miles over the bar too.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:34 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Acuna the latest Sevilla player into the box, just dragged Antony down off the ball. Not really going to get away with that.

Sabitzer then penalised for jumping into Marcao, took a hip to the head in the process too.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:31 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Montiel is indeed back up, still arguing with Weghorst from about two feet below the Dutchman.

United try and get a bit too cute on the end of the box, Eriksen unable to slide a pass through to Elanga.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:29 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Bit too keen that time, is Weghorst. Arm into the face of Montiel, who is slightly weakening his case that he’s in pain by giving plenty of chat to the referee while lying on the floor.

I imagine he’s going to be just fine.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:26 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Antony and Acuna clash on the touchline, United winger definitely kicked out at him. Entirely pointless. Acuna responded, a bit of a shoving match followed and eventually it all calms down.

Bono then takes an age to clear the ball away, Weghorst comes flying across and charges the clearance down. Home fans respond.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:23 , Matt Verri

62 mins: OFF THE POST!

It does come, but for United. Runs straight at Marcao, far too good as he cuts inside onto that left foot. Curling effort smacks back off the woodwork.

Three United changes now. Fernandes, Sancho and Martial off, Elanga, Eriksen and Weghorst all on.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:21 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Sabitzer thinks he’s won a free-kick deep in his own half, whistle goes instead for Sevilla. The visitors trry to take it quickly and instead pass it straight to a red shirt. Shambles.

Visitors are having a good spell though, feels like a big chance is coming.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:18 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Fernandes in space out on the left, all the time in the world to whip a cross into the box. He does just that, Martial and Sabitzer lurking but it runs through to Bono instead.

Sevilla then go on the attack down the right, Sancho not even breaking into a jog to get back. Gudelj goes for an overhead kick, boots Casemiro in the face instead.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:16 , Matt Verri

55 mins: And now he runs straight into Montiel. Same outrageously optimistic appeals for a penalty, even Sancho’s team-mates weren’t backing him with that.

United could have finished this tie off with a bit more of a clinical edge in attack. They’ll want at least one more goal tonight.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:14 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Plenty of United players have had really good games tonight, but you’d say Sancho hasn’t been one of them.

Again he gets into a great position, looks to slide in Malacia out wide but plays the ball straight out of play. Doesn’t have the confidence of Antony on the opposite flank.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:11 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Sevilla could really do with a striker.

Nice move on the edge of the box, wide to Navas and he pings it low into the six-yard box. Ocampos tries to flick it at goal, instead does a very nice job of clearing it away to safety.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:08 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Just wide!

Sevilla have not been taught how to defend at half-time. Antony shifts inside onto his left foot, opts not to slide Sabitzer in and curls an effort towards the far corner instead. Not quite enough whip on it.

Back underway!

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:06 , Matt Verri

Changes from both sides at the break.

Maguire replaces Varane for United, while Sevilla have brought Navas on for Torres.

We are up and running once again.

Thursday 13 April 2023 21:00 , Matt Verri

Seven shots each in the first 45 minutes, that very much doesn’t tell the full story though.

United were superb early on and cut Sevilla open at will, but eased off a bit just before half-time. Got to imagine Ten Hag will want them to up their level again, and finish this tie off tonight.

Sabitzer at the double!

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:52 , Matt Verri

HT: Man United 2-0 Sevilla

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:49 , Matt Verri

That’s half-time at Old Trafford - Sevilla inches away from pulling one back! Brilliant save from De Gea from a corner, parries it straight up and Varane is there on his own goalline to head it away under pressure.

A really good half for Man United, who lead through Sabitzer’s brace. They were utterly dominant in the first 30 minutes or so.

Scrappy since then, with a bit of a lucky dip when it comes to the officiating.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:46 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Two minutes added on.

Varane is back up and carrying on for now, but Maguire is warming up on the touchline.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:44 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Rakitic fires over from the free-kick, that was a really good position.

Fernandes will now miss next week’s second leg and he’s absolutely furious about it. Fair enough too, the officiating has been... not the best.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:42 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Hmmm. Lamela survives, have to say he’s fortunate there. Could easily have been off.

Meanwhile, Varane has gone down off the ball for United. Sevilla play on, shot from 20 yards out is blocked by Fernandes really well.

Or not, yellow card for handball. He was about four inches away, arm not even outstretched. A truly hopeless decision.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:39 , Matt Verri

38 mins: This time the yellow card does come out.

Lamela into the book, tried to control the bouncing ball and ends up stamping on Casemiro, who had gone sliding in. Painful one for the Brazilian.

VAR checking for a possible red...

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:38 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Acuna with a lunge on Antony, goes straight through the back of the winger. Does very well to avoid a yellow card, by tonight’s standards.

Camera cuts to the likes of Navas, Gil and Telles on the bench. None of them look particularly keen to leave their seats.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:35 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Sevilla are hanging on desperately. The space on offer is absolutely mad.

Sancho bundles his way through, opts not to shoot and instead passes it back to Martial. He finds Casemiro, running onto it... shot deflected behind for a corner.

Fernandes swings it in, Bono punches it straight up and Casemiro then heads it at goal. Easy for the goalkeeper eventually.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:33 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Just like that. Casemiro swings the ball out wide and Sancho can drive into the box. Ignores the run from Fernandes on the overlap, which goes down about as well as you’d expect, and has a shot blocked.

Here United come again, Antony swings a deep cross to the back post. Cut back, Fernandes pokes the ball at goal, off Sabitzer and clawed away by Bono. He would have been offside though.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:31 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Torres thinks he’s beaten Wan-Bissaka, but one of those long legs comes sliding in and knocks the ball away from him.

Sevilla definitely seeing more of the ball now, but that suits United you feel. They know there will be chances, and plenty of them, on the counter.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:28 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Torres swings in an early cross for Sevilla, Ocampos gets up in the box but a little shove from Martinez knocks him away from the ball.

Visitors could do with a decent spell of possession to calm things down, because they’re already on the verge of losing this tie.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:26 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Fernandes and Sancho mess around in the corner for a bit, before eventually swinging it in.

Sevilla half-clear the ball, but Rakitic then goes sliding through Casemiro. Yellow card for the Croatian.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:24 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Sevilla are just so open in defence, more goals in this for United for sure. Martial has been superb, floating around the front-line and causing real problems.

Visitors look to break themselves, surrounded by Varane and Casemiro and here come United again.

Antony swings the cross in, hacked behind for a corner.

GOAL! Man United 2-0 Sevilla | Marcel Sabitzer 21'

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:22 , Matt Verri

TWO FOR SABITZER!

Martial with the assist, perfect pass and perfect run from Sabitzer, who fires past Bono. What a start for United.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:20 , Matt Verri

19 mins: The visitors win another corner, this one doesn’t beat Martial at the near post though.

Marcao is swinging at anything and everything at the back for Sevilla, feels almost certain that at some point he’s going to clean a United player out.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:18 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Sevilla have had a few decent moments in attack, but their defence looks a mess. A real mess.

Antony in space again on the right, lays it off to Sabitzer. His cross very nearly sneaks in at the back post, Bono was scrambling.

GOAL! Man United 1-0 Sevilla | Marcel Sabitzer 14'

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:16 , Matt Verri

UNITED TAKE THE LEAD!

Tight for offside perhaps. Brilliant footwork from Martial to start the move, before Fernandes slides a great pass through to Sabitzer.

Perfect first touch, and he finishes with the help of a slight deflection. He’s onside too.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:13 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Montiel will now miss next week’s second leg, making his decision all the more ridiculous. Maybe he has plans.

A lovely United move sees Sancho lay the ball back to Antony, fires a shot at the near post. Bono turns it behind for a corner.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:12 , Matt Verri

11 mins: A fine mess all round.

Rakitic standing over the corner, but the referee trudges over to remind him the ball has to be in the quadrant. Not sure quite why he had to try and steal a few inches.

Lamela then has an effort blocked, but Montiel kicks the ball away in frustration and earns himself a pointless yellow card.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:10 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Rakitic swings a free-kick into the United box, only one Sevilla player had continued the run at the back post and the ball is well over his head anyway.

The former Barcelona man then gives away a foul as Martial looks to turn him. Not a great ten seconds.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:07 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Sevilla getting bodies forward, particularly as they launch a long-throw into the box.

Bit of a mess, before it’s hammered over the bar. Decent start to the match from both sides, plenty of space on offer.

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:04 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Well Antony has made a brilliant start to the match, doesn’t appear to be any injury concerns!

Great turn out wide and he’s away down the right. Ball down the side for Martial, his cut back is cleared behind for a corner.

Sancho goes for a clever routine, distinctly lacking in the clever part though.

GOOO.... OFFSIDE!

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:02 , Matt Verri

Dear me, United have the ball in the net inside 30 seconds!

Antony picks up the ball in a central position, slides the pass through to Sancho and he provides the finish. Offside flag up though, and confirmed by VAR.

KICK-OFF!

Thursday 13 April 2023 20:00 , Matt Verri

Up and running at Old Trafford!

Here we go...

Thursday 13 April 2023 19:58 , Matt Verri

Teams are out onto the pitch at Old Trafford. United just the 24 matches unbeaten on home soil now across all competitions.

Sevilla need to pull off a big shock if they’re to bring an end to that run tonight.

High praise!

Thursday 13 April 2023 19:54 , Matt Verri

Late concern for Antony?

Thursday 13 April 2023 19:49 , Matt Verri

Bit of a worry for United, Antony has gone down the tunnel early.

Grimace on his face as he jogged off from the warm-ups. No news yet that there is a team news change, so will assume he is still starting for now.

Not long now!

Thursday 13 April 2023 19:40 , Matt Verri

Kick-off coming up in about 20 minutes.

United haven’t lost at Old Trafford since September, though that defeat did come in Europe and against Spanish opposition. Real Sociedad edged a narrow group-stage encounter.

A lot of time has passed since then though, and United are a much better side. Big favourites tonight.

History on Sevilla’s side

Thursday 13 April 2023 19:33 , Matt Verri

Sevilla have won this competition six times, making them by far the most successful side in Europa League history.

They went all the way at the end of 2019/20 season, beating Man United 2-1 on the way as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side lost their third semi-final of the campaign.

Look away now, United fans...

Back in town

Thursday 13 April 2023 19:26 , Matt Verri

Alex Telles back at Old Trafford tonight.

On loan at Sevilla, is eligible to face his parent club, but he’s only been named on the bench.

Joao Cancelo came on for Bayern Munich against Man City earlier this week and got very loudly booed. Imagine it will be a bit more pleasant for Telles should he be brought on.

Ten Hag gives Eriksen update

Thursday 13 April 2023 19:18 , Matt Verri

“He’s ready,” the United boss tells BT Sport.

“I want to do it really carefully and I have to say the midfield played really well against Brentford and Everton. Not really necessary to change a lot, so Scott [McTominay] drops out with an injury.

“Casemiro needs the minutes after some games out, so I think it’s logical to play this midfield.”

150 up for Wan-Bissaka

Ten Hag: We play our best football with Martial

Thursday 13 April 2023 19:04 , Matt Verri

Erik ten Hag was full of praise for Anthony Martial in his pre-match press conference, insisting Man United are a better team when he’s fit and available.

“The time he needs for a goal is less,” Ten Hag said.

“When he’s in the team, we play our best football and we have our best results as a team. I defend him because I point to the stats and see how he contributes.”

Casemiro returns!

Thursday 13 April 2023 18:56 , Matt Verri

Casemiro straight back into the United side as expected, partnering Fernandes with Sabitzer likely to play slightly more advanced. Martial also in for his first start in three months.

Otherwise as expected, with Wan-Bissaka and Malacia continuing at full-back, and Varane back in to partner Martinez.

Telles is on the bench for Sevilla against his parent club, along with Navas and Gil. Lamela starts on his return to England, with Rakitic lining up in midfield.

Casemiro in danger...

Thursday 13 April 2023 18:32 , Matt Verri

Casemiro is just back from a four-game ban, but he has to be very careful tonight.

A yellow card here will see him suspended for the second leg in Spain next week, so the Brazilian has no margin for error. He’s already been suspended three times this season - surely there’s not a fourth coming up!

Man United vs La Liga

United seemingly taking on the entirety of Spain this season.

They came up against Real Sociedad in the group stage, before knocking Barcelona out in the knockout round and beating Real Betis in the last-16 to reach the quarter-finals.

Their reward? More Spanish opposition!

Ten Hag on first-choice midfield

Thursday 13 April 2023 18:11 , Matt Verri

Christian Eriksen made his return off the bench against Everton, and he could well be in the from the start tonight. Erik ten Hag is very relieved to have the Danish star available again.

“I think the balance in the midfield was good with Casemiro, Eriksen and Bruno,” Ten Hag said.

“Casemiro the balance player, the line up player, Eriksen can support him but also go to the final part of the game, can create chances with key passes.

“So yeah, a really important player and I think he had seven or eight assists in the league, which tells the story.”

Standard Sport prediction

Thursday 13 April 2023 17:57 , Matt Verri

United have not been at their free-flowing best since the international break, and the expected absence of Rashford will certainly not help them against Sevilla.

However, it is more than seven months since Ten Hag’s side were last beaten at Old Trafford, and while Sevilla have a brilliant record in this competition, their La Liga struggles suggest they will fall short here.

Man United to win, 2-0.

Sevilla team news

Thursday 13 April 2023 17:50 , Matt Verri

Pape Gueye and Marcos Acuna were both sent off for Sevilla last time out, but their suspensions will not apply in Europe and so the pair are available to be involved at Old Trafford.

Alex Telles, on loan from United, is eligible to play against his parent club, while Erik Lamela and Jesus Navas are among the former Premier League players set to start for the Spanish side. Bryan Gil, on loan from Tottenham, is also in contention.

Man United team news

Thursday 13 April 2023 17:44 , Matt Verri

Marcus Rashford will miss the next few matches through injury and so will not be involved, but Casemiro is available after suspension.

He has not played since he was shown a straight red card against Southampton last month, his second sending off of the season and one that earned him a four-match ban.

That suspension has now been served, though it would not have applied in Europe anyway, and Casemiro is expected to come straight back into the side at Old Trafford for the first leg of the quarter-final tie.

Anthony Martial is in contention for his first start for three months as a straight replacement for Rashford after coming on and scoring against Everton, with the Frenchman set to get the nod over Wout Weghorst.

Predicted Man United XI: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Martinez, Malacia, Casemiro, Sabitzer, Fernandes, Antony, Martial, Sancho
