Everton Fan View: Marcel Brands could spell the end of Steve Walsh

It seems by all reports that PSV’s Director of Football Marcel Brands will be an Everton employee sooner or later. The problem though is that Everton currently have a Director of Football in Steve Walsh, who was employed nearly two years ago by the club.

If it is the end for Steve Walsh, there won’t be many fans who’ll be unhappy about that. It’s been a big change of opinion since he was first given the job at Everton, as the fans were hugely optimistic about his appointment, and rightly so.

Great expectations

He had come to Everton off the back of helping Leicester win the Premier League with some incredible signings like N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez, who were signed under his guidance. At Everton though, it has been a complete disaster with a horribly low success rate as far as transfers go.

These weren’t cheap transfers either, there have been many high profile failures that have cost the club an incredible amount of money. The reasons for this aren’t clear to everyone, but the signings made by the club are his responsibility. Whether he listened to the managers too much, or couldn’t adapt to a new role, who knows, but it hasn’t worked.

At Leicester he was the head scout so didn’t have as much responsibility, maybe he couldn’t cope with the increased pressures of the role. It could be the case that simply putting forward potential players was his forte.

A director of football has to make decisions in the best interest of the club, regardless of whether a manager agrees with them or not. Of course, the manager has his input, but the director of football should stick to the clubs long-term vision.

His biggest failure

The inability to sign a striker after the early and obvious sale of Romelu Lukaku has rightfully been used as a stick to beat him with. It cost Everton dearly, as did not having any adequate cover for the left-back position. These were his responsibilities, and he failed.

It seems as though the end is nigh for Walsh. We all make mistakes in our jobs, but not all of us make decisions that cost a company tens of millions of pounds. He came with great optimism, but it has all ended very badly.

Hopefully the Brands deal is completed soon, and Everton can move on to a new season with a new director of football and a new manager.
