Everton have been the biggest disappointment of the Premier League season so far, believes former Chelsea and Liverpool midfielder Nigel Spackman.

The Toffees appointed Marco Silva as their boss in the summer and backed him in the transfer market, spending a large amount of money on new faces.

Yesterday’s defeat at Arsenal means they have won just once in their opening six games, a run which has included a draw at home to Huddersfield and a defeat to West Ham.

Although they played well at the Emirates and had plenty of chances to take the lead, Spackman has been left disappointed by Everton’s start.

“The biggest disappointment besides Mourinho?” Spackman joked.

“But no, Everton for me. Silva has come in with a big reputation and they really chased their man after finishing well last season under Sam Allardyce.

“[They’ve] brought all these new players in, spent a lot of money and [it is] just not working for them.

“So the pressure is on them at the moment.”

And Spackman picked Silva’s former club Watford as this season’s surprise package.

Under Javi Gracia the Hornets have picked up 13 points from their opening six games and sit fourth in the table – currently the only side stopping the ‘big six’ taking the top six spots in the league.

“I think the big surprise has been Watford,” he added. “I think they’ve started extremely well.

“They have got Arsenal this week which is a big game for then.”
