Marcus Rashford praises Manchester United’s ‘positive attitude’ after thrashing Southampton
Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford insisted his team must keep the emphasis on constant improvement, despite a return to form with a 9-0 hammering of Southampton.
The Red Devils had won only one of their last four games in the Premier League, but were helped on their way on Tuesday night when two Saints players were shown red cards in the first and last minutes of the game.
Rashford notched the second of the night and forced the third with a cross for Jan Bednarek’s own goal, before being replaced on the hour mark before a late glut saw United’s goal difference given a remarkable boost.

But in keeping with his usual on- and off-pitch process, Rashford wants the focus to be on ensuring the mentality is right and continuing to get better as a collective.
“It’s always good to score lots of goals and we’re happy with three points. We dropped points in the last few games and needed to get back to winning ways,” he told BT Sport.
"It’s easy to take your foot of the gas and keep possession, but we wanted to score more goals. The first half set the tone and from half-time it’s about the right mentality and a positive attitude.
“We’re not a ready-made team for two or three years, we’re still improving and learning a lot as a group and we have to keep improving ourselves.”
The game’s turning point came almost immediately after kick-off when Alexandre Jankewitz was dismissed for a high tackle on Scott McTominay, and while Rashford felt the dismissal was correct, he felt the Southampton teenager was “unlucky, not nasty”.
The striker’s goal on the night took him past Eric Cantona on Manchester United’s all-time list of goalscorers and he was pleased to emulate a hero of the past - but he typically remains only looking to the future and netting plenty more in the games to come.
“He’s a top player and done a lot for the club - im pleased to go past him. I just want to score more goals.”
