Mario Gotze should join Liverpool and revive his career under Jurgen Klopp, says Kevin Grosskreutz

Mario Gotze should join Liverpool and try to revive his career under Jurgen Klopp, according to former Borussia Dortmund teammate Kevin Grosskreutz.

Now 26, Gotze has struggled to fulfil the promise of his spectacular breakthrough as a teenager at Dortmund and the expectation generated by his winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final.

Persistent muscular injuries caused by a rare metabolism disorder scuppered his attempts to succeed under Pep Guardiola in three seasons at Bayern Munich and have undermined him since returning to Dortmund in the summer of 2016.

Gotze was left out of Dortmund’s squad to face Hoffenheim last weekend after producing an underwhelming performance against Club Brugge in the Europa League, and has made just two first-team appearances for the club this season.

And Grosskreutz, who played alongside Gotze under Klopp during his six-year spell at Dortmund, believes his former manager may hold the key to rediscovering the midfielder’s best form.

“I'm very sorry for Mario Gotze at the moment, because stuff is written about him - and only him - every day,” Grosskreutz told Sky in Germany.

“In Brugge, for example, the whole [Dortmund] team didn't play well.

“Maybe it would be good for him to go abroad in the winter to find a bit more peace and bring his career back on track. Klopp knows him quite well, he would be a good fit for Liverpool.”
