Marloes Coenen Looking to Redeem Herself at Bellator 163

Marloes Coenen Looking to Redeem Herself at Bellator 163

Coming off of a stretch where she had won four of five fights, veteran featherweight Marloes Coenen might have been feeling a little too confident when she matched up with late replacement Alexis Dufresne at Bellator 155 in May.

Things quickly went bad for Coenen, as she went into the bout overly aggressive, and ended up losing to Dufresne via first-round submission.

“What didn’t quite work for me was that I decided to underestimate (Dufresne),” Coenen told MMAWeekly.com. “I was very emotional. The reason I was emotional was because she didn’t make weight, and she disrespected my trainer after the weigh-in and a few other things.

“The only thing that was on my mind is was that I wanted to bring her in agony, but I ended up being in agony myself.”

With Dufresne coming in seven pounds over their scheduled weight, Coenen could have justifiably cancelled the fight, but instead decided to move forward because that's the type of fighter she is.

“I think if you’re a true fighter, you fight,” said Coenen. “When I won my first title, it was an open-weight tournament. I (defeated) Becky Levi, who I believe was 105 kilograms/231 pounds.

“Of course the level of competition wasn’t as close as it is now as fighters, but it’s definitely an old school mentality, and I prefer to be a true fighter than somebody who picks their fights.”

Coenen (23-7) will look to rebound when she takes on Talita Nogueira (6-0) in a main card 145-pound bout at Bellator 163 on Friday in Uncasville, Conn.

“I want to win by knockout or submission. I really hate winning on points,” Coenen said. “(Nogueira’s) strength is on the ground, so I want to keep it standing, but don’t underestimate me on the ground.

“This time I will so not underestimate her. I will fight smart, and I’m so motivated to win this fight. I really, really, really want to redeem myself.”

While Coenen’s focus is on getting back on track against Nogueira, she won’t deny that she has Bellator championship aspirations in 2017.

“My horizon is until Nov. 4, but if I push myself a little bit further, there’s another horizon and that’s the Bellator belt,” said Coenen. “I’m a little bit superstitious as well; I really have to focus on this fight. I really, really have to win this one.

“After this one, I will take a break, and when I’m back in the Netherlands, I’ll start training again. I will start focusing on the next fight, and hopefully it will be for the belt.”
