It was the pinnacle of nineties-turn-noughties red carpets – yes, coordinating your look with your lover – and it’s back and better than ever.
You can thank Jonah Hill and Sarah Brady for that. At the New York premiere of the much anticipated film Don’t Look Up, which comes to Netflix on Christmas Eve, the couple made a stir with identical, turquoise Gucci suits (sans shirts) and jacquard Manolo Blahnik mules. They accessorised it up to stand apart slightly – Hill with a long thread of beads, Brady with two more delicate necklaces – and both picked out three brooches for their lapels. The message was clear: twinning is top again.
The Y2K fashion history of doubling down when dressing up is rich, pioneered by the patron saints of duo-style David and Victoria Beckham. Not to mention Britney and Justin bringing a whole new meaning to double denim at American Music Awards back in 2001.
Posh and Beck’s most iconic snap in the spotlight was at a 1999 opening of the Versace Couture Jeans Boutique in London – those duplicate biker leather jackets and trousers, fresh faces and ruffled hair. ‘We were just having fun with it, which to be honest with you, is kind of the way it should be,’ Victoria Beckham told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show in October. ‘I really wish I had the courage to do it more now.’
These days, while toned down, their joint appearances are still tied together with ease, whether that’s black tuxedos at the 2015 British Fashion Awards, or crispy white blazers and ball gowns at the 2014 Met Gala.
The Jonas Brothers have also raised their heads as prominent partner dressers. In abstract print Louis Vuitton polo necks and jumpsuits, Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner were striking on the 2019 Camp Met Gala steps, while Nick Jonas and wife Priyanka Chopra went all out white wedding for Cannes Film Festival the same year.
And the two new power pairings Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker, and Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly have also taken a page out of the Beckham’s book when it comes to whipping up media mayhem. At the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards, Kourtney and Travis went similarly punky in a black leather mini dress, and studded knee pad suit.
Meanwhile this week, at the latter’s nail polish launch party in LA, Megan and Machine Gun Kelly both wore wide lapelled, black tailored jackets with matching pink manicures – including a chain which linked them by their pinkies. Potentially coupling gone crazy.
Either way, if you’re headed out as a duo this December – get creative, and copy.
