There are always twists and turns in the transfer market, even though things have not clicked into full gear across the country up to now. Liverpool will be active at some point, but hasn't signed anyone yet.

The Reds were linked with a transfer move for Feyenoord holding midfielder Mats Wieffer earlier on Thursday. However, Brighton has now had a bid worth $32m (£25m/€30m) accepted for the 24-year-old, according to the Daily Mail.

Instead, even though the Feyenoord defensive midfield player was an important figure under Arne Slot, Liverpool didn't get involved. It might have been that the Reds' name was thrown into negotiations to speed up an agreement.

The Reds, the report says, were NOT in for Wieffer. While he worked with Slot last season, Liverpool didn't get involved in the battle. If it had, it could easily have won the race but chose not to.

Liverpool could do with a world-class replacement for Fabinho coming in this summer, ideally, but a move will only be made for a truly game-changing option. Wieffer is very good but perhaps more suited to Brighton than the Champions League.

Only a few hours ago, the Dutch outlet De Telegraaf claimed Liverpool still held an interest in Wieffer and had looked to make a "frantic" attempt to hijack the deal. But even at that stage it was being caveated by the fact that the Reds may have left it too late.

Liverpool.com says: Brighton usually knows a good player when it sees one but Wieffer may not have been a big upgrade on the options that Liverpool already has. There are rightly big hopes for Stefan Bajcetic, though the Spaniard will need to be carefully managed after missing almost the whole of last season through injury.
