Matt Brown Allegedly Assaulted by Former Coach at UFC 198 Host Hotel

Matt Brown didn't get much time to recoup after losing to Demian Maia at UFC 198 on Saturday night in Curitiba, Brazil.

Brown was allegedly attacked in the host hotel lobby on Sunday morning by his former jiu-jitsu coach, Rodrigo Botti. Though UFC commentator Brian Stann had initially reported that the incident was perpetrated by a random fan, Brown's wife later revealed that it was Botti who allegedly attacked her husband.

Following the alleged attack on Brown, Botti reportedly fled the hotel, but one of Brown's friends chased him down, caught him, and attacked him before several other people intervened, including UFC executive Reed Harris.

The alleged attack on Brown was not caught on tape, but the altercation and detention of Botti outside the hotel was captured on the video included below. After Harris intervened, Botti was held until police arrived.

Botti, according to an MMAFighting.com report, told the Curitiba Police Department that he was going to press charges against Brown’s friend, whom he identified as Vinicius Lemos.

“UFC is aware that welterweight contender Matt Brown was allegedly attacked (on Sunday) by a former acquaintance at the UFC 198 host hotel in Curitiba, Brazil,” read the UFC's statement to MMAWeekly.com. “UFC has been in communication with local authorities to gather more information relative to the alleged attack, and is reviewing security measures at the hotel.

“Fortunately, Brown was uninjured in the situation and will return home to the United States later today as planned.”

This isn't the first incident between Brown and Botti. The two had a physical altercation in early 2015. Botti pursued assault charges against Brown, but the case was eventually dropped.
