Will Messi play final Inter Miami match Saturday before Copa América? Here's the latest

Lionel Messi is expected to play in his final MLS match Saturday before joining Argentina for Copa América next week.

Inter Miami hosts St. Louis City on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

And Messi, who turns 37 on June 24, could use the playing time Saturday to find his rhythm again before the Copa América, which begins June 20, and could be the final major tournament he’ll play for Argentina in his legendary career.

“They are all ready to play. Today we are going to train, they are going to see everyone there, there is no physical problem. And after that, we will talk to them,” Inter Miami assistant Javi Morales told reporters before Friday's practice, which Messi participated in.

“We are going to put the strongest team together to, as I said before, try to finish before the break in the best way to get the three points at home. … But everyone is fine and everyone wants to play.”

Messi could use St. Louis match to regain his form

Messi, the 2021 Copa America and 2022 World Cup champion, scored a goal in Inter Miami’s 3-1 loss to Atlanta United last Wednesday. It was his first match in a 10-day stretch after being allowed to stay home and not travel to play May 25 at Vancouver.

Uniquely, it was also the first match where Messi scored a goal and lost the game since the 2-1 loss Argentina suffered to Saudi Arabia to begin the Qatar World Cup on Nov. 22, 2022.

Still, the goal was a positive sign for Messi, who was held scoreless and without an assist in matches against at Montreal on May 11, where he endured a blow to his legendary left leg, and home against D.C. United on May 18.

Despite the two quiet outings from Messi against Montreal and D.C. United, Messi was on a tear with four consecutive matches with a goal and an assist, and eight overall in MLS play where he scored a goal or tallied as assist.

Ensuring Messi is healthy for Copa America was paramount for Inter Miami, who sits in first place in the MLS Eastern Conference with 34 points, and hopes another three points with a victory eases the blow they’ll endure without Messi as the MLS season continues during the FIFA international window.

Messi to join Argentina for Copa America training next week

Messi won’t have to travel far to rejoin his Argentine teammates: They’re reportedly training at Inter Miami’s facilities for Copa América, beginning next week.

Messi is expected to play in two friendlies which will serve as Argentina Copa América warmups: against Ecuador at Soldier Field in Chicago on June 9 at 5:30 p.m. ET; and vs. Guatemala near Washington D.C. at Commanders Field in Landover, Maryland on June 14 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Then, Messi and Argentina take center stage in the Copa América opener against Canada at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on June 20.

Argentina, in Group A, will also face Chile on June 25 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and Peru on June 29 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida during Copa América group play.

The Copa América final is July 14 at Hard Rock Stadium.
