Argentina World Cup captain Lionel Messi and his national side teammates told their manager Jorge Sampaoli that they, ‘longer trusted him,’ according to a new book.

Mundial es Historias, a new book from Argentinian journalist Ariel Senosian, claims a row erupted after they were defeated 3-0 by Croatia in the group stages.

One player is claimed to have said: “We do not get what you say. We no longer trust you. We want to have an opinion.”

Sampaoli was then told that players wanted an opinion on, ‘everything,’ to do with with the team.

Senosian’s book reports that Sampaoli asked just how much influence the players wanted, saying:

“So you are going to put the team together, direct in training, everything?”

Captain Messi told him: “You have asked me ten times which players I wanted in the line-up and which I didn’t, and I never gave you a single name. Tell me, in front of everyone, if I ever gave you any names.”

The row appeared to have a positive effect as they defeated their next opponents, Nigeria, and Sampaoli was seen to be asking Messi if he should bring on Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.

Sampaoli has now been let go by Argentina after the disappointing tournament after they were knocked out by Croatia.
