Mikel Arteta has told his Arsenal team that they cannot allow their form to spiral after being thumped by Liverpool.

The Reds ran out 4-0 winners at Anfield on Saturday as Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota, Mo Salah and Takumi Minamino all got on the scoresheet.

Prior to the defeat, Arsenal had been on an unbeaten run of 10 games and they would have climbed above Liverpool in the Premier League table with another win.

Asked how important it was for the Gunners to bounce back and not let the loss spiral into a poor run of form, Arteta said: “That’s what big teams do and good teams do. That’s what we have to do.

“On Monday, we start again, review the match, the things that we should have done better and understand the reason why we lost and correct it. That’s it. Then focus completely on Newcastle [on Saturday].

“I’ve seen the biggest teams in the world come here, to this ground, and collapse. So, it can be.

“In certain moments I think we were a little insistent when things were not working. We lost some balls in the near side and we had to mix our play much better, but we didn’t and that’s it.

“They were better than us for 96 minutes and that’s the level. That’s why they have been where they have been. They have been together for six years and today you could see the difference in the moment that we lost control in the game.”

Arsenal were doing well in the first half and, until Liverpool opened the scoring in the 39th minute, they had looked solid.

Jurgen Klopp’s side, however, kicked on from there and dominated Arsenal from the beginning of the second half.

“I think that we throw the game again in 15 minutes, making exactly what we don’t have to do against the best team in the league doing that,” Arteta added.

“Then attacking in short counters, when in two or three passes they have the wingers inside your full-backs and you are completely exposed.

“It is something that we should have done better. We haven’t and that’s the reason, apart from others, that at the moment they are better than us, and we lost the game.”
