It says a lot about the hit-and-miss nature of football that this year’s frontrunners for PFA Player of the Year, Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne, were both considered flops during their first stints in England.

Cut loose by Jose Mourinho during his second spell at Chelsea, Salah made 13 Premier League appearances for the Blues before being packed off on loan while De Bruyne appeared only nine times in all competitions before he left Chelsea for Wolfsburg.

It was on loan, first and Fiorentina and the Roma, that Salah truly began to flourish. Having joined the Giallorossi permanently in 2016 he returned to the Premier League at the start of the season, and he now has 31 league goals and a Player of the Year award to his name.

While De Bruyne had to settle for runner-up when it came to that particular accolade, he has orchestrated Manchester City’s midfield fantastically this season as they have stormed their way to the Premier League title.

With their successes in mind, here are five other players who could make a triumphant return to England having been written off once before.

Serge Gnabry

Though he threatened to make a breakthrough for Arsenal during the 2013/14 season – catching the eye with a deft assist for Santi Cazorla during an FA Cup victory over Tottenham – Gnabry’s development was thrown out of kilter by a serious knee injury. The nadir of his time in England was his disastrous loan at West Brom, where he made only three appearances and Tony Pulis said he was not “at that level to play games.”

Having moved to Werder Bremen in 2016 and scored 11 goals during his first campaign in the Bundesliga, Gnabry was snapped up by Bayern Munich at the beginning of the season and is now coming to the end of a productive loan spell with Hoffenheim. An exciting attacker with a penchant for the spectacular, his career could well go supernova in the near future.

Luis Alberto

Signed from Sevilla for a reported £6.8m back in 2013, Luis Alberto failed to make much of an impression on Merseyside. Considered one for the future by Brendan Rodgers, his route to the first team was disrupted by Rodgers’ departure during his loan spell at Deportivo La Coruna.

Having moved to Lazio in 2016, Alberto is now one of the most highly rated midfielders in Italy. He has 11 goals and 12 assists in Serie A this season and is reportedly in contention for a World Cup spot with Spain; should he impress at the tournament he will no doubt spend much of the summer being linked with a move.

Suso

Another former Reds midfielder who has excelled away from Anfield, Suso was on Liverpool’s books between 2012 and 2015 and was fairly well liked by fans. Unfortunately, he failed to force his way into Brendan Rodgers’ midfield and eventually departed for Milan.

While the Rossoneri have struggled at times this season, Suso has been a bright spark and has six goals and five assists under his belt. Not quite as prolific as Luis Alberto, he nonetheless has the potential for a successful Premier League comeback.

Juan Cuadrado

This season may have been disrupted by injury, but Juan Cuadrado is still well regarded at Juventus. Having won Serie A and the Coppa Italia twice apiece since ending a disappointing two-season spell with Chelsea, the Bianconeri wide man is renowned for his balance of creativity and defensive work rate.

Given his versatility – Cuadrado can play as an out-and-out winger, as a wing-back or on the right side of a front three – he could still thrive were he to make a return to the Premier League. Fitness notwithstanding, of course.

Paulinho

Having experienced a Christ-like career resurrection, Paulinho is a man full of surprises. Considered one of the most underwhelming Tottenham signings in recent memory after arriving from Corinthians to massive fanfare in 2013 – and subsequently doing very little to impress – the Brazilian midfielder was shipped off to Guangzhou Evergrande in ignominy two years later.

After stunning world football by signing for Barcelona back in August, Paulinho has proven that moving to the Chinese Super League is no barrier to returning to succeed in Europe. Well on his way to his first La Liga title having already won the Copa del Rey, Paulinho might still surprise us and tear up the Premier League. But not with Spurs.
