Morocco have every reason to believe this is their year to end their long Africa Cup of Nations drought.

Malawi are next up for the Atlas Lions, after they cruised through the group stage unbeaten to raise hopes of a first title since 1976. Since then, they have only reached the semi-finals once, en route to defeat at the hands of Tunisia in the 2004 final.

Malawi qualified as a best third-placed team, getting out of the groups for the first time in their history. Midfielder John Banda said ahead of the tie: “The Morocco game is the biggest game of our lives and we are looking forward to it.”

A spot in the quarter-finals, facing either Senegal or Cape Verde, will be the victor’s prize in Yaounde.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Morocco vs Malawi is scheduled for a 7pm GMT kick-off on Tuesday, January 24, 2022.

Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde will host the match.

Achraf Hakimi trained ahead of the game having also been a doubt, with coach Vahid Halilhodzic stating his optimism that the star full-back will make the game. Defenders Mohamed Chibi and Sofiane Alakouch have shaken off knocks and are ready for the game.

Having sat out the Senegal game, Malawi’s Limbikani Mzava is again a doubt for this tie with both sides otherwise reporting no fresh injury or Covid-19 concerns.
