The NBA has banned a Toronto Raptors two-way player for life. What did Jontay Porter do?
Toronto Raptors two-way power forward Jontay Porter received a lifetime ban from the NBA for "disclosing confidential information to sports bettors, limiting his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes, and betting on NBA games," the league announced Wednesday.
Porter, 24, had been under investigation since March 25 for "multiple instances of betting irregularities over the past several months."
“There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter’s blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement.
Porter's punishment is the first banishment from the NBA since O.J. Mayo was "dismissed and disqualified" for violating the league's Anti-Drug Program in 2016. (Mayo was eligible for reinstatement after two years, though he has not since returned.)

Who is Jontay Porter?
Porter is the younger brother of Michael Porter Jr., a small forward for the Denver Nuggets.
Jontay Porter played basketball at Missouri from 2017-2019. He earned SEC Sixth Man of the year and SEC All-Freshman honors in 2018.
Porter tore his ACL twice while in college and went undrafted following the 2019 NBA Draft. He signed with the Memphis Grizzlies in March 2020 and made 11 appearances for them in 2020-21 before the team waived him in July 2021.
The younger Porter played the 2022-2023 season with the Milwaukee Bucks' G League affiliate – the Wisconsin Herd – and began the regular season this year on the Detroit Pistons' G League affiliate – the Motor City Cruise.
He signed a two-way contract with the Raptors last December and made 26 appearances (five starts) with the NBA team prior to receiving the lifetime ban. He averaged 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while playing an average of 13.8 minutes per game.
What did Jontay Porter do?
NBA reporter Ben Golliver of the Washington Post broke down everything Porter did to earn the lifetime ban.
Porter bet at least 13 times on NBA games with another person's online betting account, placing more than $50,000 worth of bets and winning nearly $22,000
He did not bet on games in which he played, though he did bet on the Raptors to lose three times
He told a person he knew was an NBA bettor "confidential information" about his health before a game in late March
Another bettor Porter knew placed an $80,000 bet (to win $1.1 million) that the Raptors forward would underperform in that same game
In that game, Porter claimed he "felt ill" and sat out of the game after playing for just three minutes
The NBA's investigation into Jontay Porter revealed:

- Another bettor placed $80,000 bet on Porter to win $1.1 million, wagering he would underperform.
