Neal Maupay aims dig at James Maddison after Tottenham star left out of England squad for Euro 2024

Neal Maupay aims dig at James Maddison after Tottenham star left out of England squad for Euro 2024

Former Brentford striker Neal Maupay appeared to aim something of a dig to Tottenham’s James Maddison after he was omitted for the England squad for Euro 2024.

Maddison was last month named in Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man squad for the upcoming European Championship in Germany but was told on Wednesday he had not made the final 26.

Southgate will confirm the final make-up of his squad on Friday but Maddison will not feature and has left the camp before Friday’s final warm-up game against Iceland at Wembley.

Liverpool’s Curtis Jones has joined Maddison in not making the cut, while reports suggest Jack Grealish will also stay at home.

Harry Maguire is believed to be a significant doubt, having not made an appearance for Manchester United since April due to a calf injury.

There is hope, however, that Luke Shaw will be fit to feature after the United full-back returned to training following a muscle injury to have ruled him out since February.

Maddison took to social media to speak of his devastation about being left out, although admitted his form at club level since returning from an ankle injury in November gave Southgate a reason to drop him.

The Spurs star previously had a run in with Maupay during the Frenchman’s loan spell with Brentford.

Maupay mimicked Maddison famous ‘darts’ celebration during a Premier League meeting between the two clubs in January, to which the Spurs midfielder took umbrage.

After an on-field clash between the two Maddison told TNT Sports: “I just said that he probably hasn't scored enough goals of his own to have his own celebration, so he had to steal mine."

Their row then continued on social media, with Maupay saying of the game: “Gutted we couldn’t get the win. More goals and less relegations in my career than James Maddison.”

Not long after Maddison’s message about being left out of the squad, Maupay took to X (formerly Twitter) to post a photo of himself smiling and holding darts against a board.
