Neil Warnock has been spotted in Aberdeen as he finalises terms on an expected appointment as the club’s interim manager until the end of the season.

The 75-year-old, who has repeatedly said he is still open to job offers, could be in the dugout when Aberdeen visit Rangers on Tuesday night.

Pittodrie talks with Warnock, who was most recently at Huddersfield Town, began after Barry Robson was dismissed last week after a year in charge.

Warnock had been one of three candidates in the frame, but now appears to be in line to be announced on Monday. Footage believed to be of Warnock was posted on social media by travellers arriving at Aberdeen International Airport on Sunday.

With Warnock’s main home still in Cornwall, he is facing a potential commute that would stretch the length of Britain.

A move to the Scottish Premiership begins a fresh chapter for one of the most enduring careers in football management. Warnock, who also had successful spells at Cardiff City, Crystal Palace and Queen’s Park Rangers, started out in management 43 years ago, with Northern Premier League side Gainsborough Trinity.

Neil Lennon, Jack Ross and Alex Neil have been linked with the Aberdeen job long term, but Warnock will likely take the role until the end of the season.

First-team coach Peter Leven took charge of the squad following Robson’s sacking on Wednesday. Aberdeen are eighth in the Scottish Premiership, two points off the top six.

Warnock departed Huddersfield after his second stint at the club in September, having saved the club from relegation back to the third tier. He described at the time how he has the “buzz” for management again, having previously retired in 2022.

Warnock closely follows Scottish football, previously telling reporters he was a Rangers fan and that he had once applied for the Dons job, but “never got a reply”.
