Netherlands vs Argentina - LIVE!

Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez saved penalties from Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis before Lautaro Martinez scored the winning spot kick to secure them a 4-3 shootout win over the Netherlands after their World Cup quarter-final finished 2-2 after 120 minutes.

In a scrappy half-hour of extra time with the scores level, Enzo Fernandez rattled the post in the closing seconds while Martinez and German Pezzella also had efforts blocked or parried away as Argentina desperately pushed for a winner.

The Netherlands had rarely troubled Argentina during the match before substitute Wout Weghorst’s header 10 minutes later sparked them into life and he rolled the ball past goalkeeper Emi Martinez deep into stoppage time to send the game into extra time. Argentina captain Lionel Messi had superbly set up Nahuel Molina for their first-half opener, threading a sublime pass through the Dutch defence, before coolly slotting in a penalty in the after Denzel Dumfries fouled Marcos Acuna. Argentina will face Croatia in the semi-finals.

“Another incredible performance from the Argentina captain. Set up his side’s goal with a ridiculous assist and was comfortably the best player on the pitch. Slotted a penalty to seal the win.”

What a game that was. Van Gaal said we wouldn’t get a World Cup classic, but I think we did.

Not the start they needed...

0-0

21:47 , Matt Verri

Once again Van Dijk and Messi meet in the middle.

Van Dijk has pointed to one end of the pitch, so we’ll assume he’s won the toss. He’s walking up with the ball too - he’s going first!

21:45 , Matt Verri

Brazil were knocked out on penalties earlier today, Neymar didn’t even get to take one.

Will Messi go early in the shootout, get his side off to a good start hopefully?

We’re soon going to find out.

FT: Netherlands 2-2 Argentina

Penalties it is!

21:43 , Matt Verri

OFF THE POST!

Fernandez with the effort from just outside the box, smacks off the woodwork! Inches away.

21:41 , Matt Verri

119 mins: Martinez denied from the edge of the box! Comfortable enough save.

It looks like we’re going to penalties for the second time today.

21:41 , Matt Verri

118 mins: It’s all Argentina, the Dutch are camped back on the edge of their own box.

Di Maria has made a real impact, brought some energy back to his side. Here come the Dutch on the counter though, Berghuis skips into space but his cross is too close to Martinez.

21:39 , Matt Verri

116 mins: Over the bar from Pezzella! Got up well, header isn’t kept down though.

Four minutes to go until penalties - it’s Argentina who look most likely to get the winner if there is to be one.

21:38 , Matt Verri

115 mins: The fans thought that was in!

Fernandez’s strike is deflected, looping dangerously but just lands on the roof of the net. That wasn’t far away at all.

Corner swung in, headed away. Netherlands are hanging on here.

21:36 , Matt Verri

114 mins: De Jong drags Messi back on the halfway line, does well to avoid a booking in this current climate.

Fernandez pulls it back for Martinez, catches the strike really cleanly but Van Dijk is there to produce a brilliant block!

21:35 , Matt Verri

112 mins: Guess what? Another yellow card.

Gakpo leading the Netherlands charge, Pezzella slides in and wins some of the ball but not enough, apparently. He’s into the book.

Free-kick sent into the box, De Jong swings at it, Ake swings at it, whistle goes... free-kick for the Netherlands.

21:33 , Matt Verri

111 mins: Low cross into the box, Van Dijk boots it out of play. Not the time to be messing around.

Change for Argentina, Di Maria on for Lisandro Martinez. Will be a shift to a back four now.

21:32 , Matt Verri

109 mins: Montiel now shown a yellow card - no idea what that was for.

Whatever happened, he’ll now be suspended for the semi-final if Argentina get through.

Messi tries to make something happen, cutting inside onto his left foot but he fires the effort high and wide.

21:30 , Matt Verri

108 mins: So many fouls, no flow to the match.

Got to feel there will be one more big chance... there’s always one more chance!

Only one man Argentina will want it to fall to.

Back up and running!

21:28 , Matt Verri

Here we go then. Time for someone to be a hero.

HT: Netherlands 2-2 Argentina

21:25 , Matt Verri

105 minutes played, it’s still level.

Unless there’s a goal in the next 15 minutes, we’re going to penalties!

21:23 , Matt Verri

103 mins: There are some very tired bodies out there now. Messi is one of them, barely moving. He’ll spark into life when he needs to though.

Timber gives away another free-kick, there are now a lot of cracks on that ice he’s standing on.

21:21 , Matt Verri

101 mins: Messi down, Argentina think they have an advantage... the referee disagrees.

Timber blocked Messi off, he’s already on a yellow card so he best be careful. The referee lets him off with just a warning this time.

Some rare generosity!

21:19 , Matt Verri

99 mins: Otamendi trips De Jong after a smart turn, another Dutch free-kick coming up. Wider and further out this time.

Berghuis clips it in, Van Dijk waiting but it never gets to him.

21:17 , Matt Verri

98 mins: When do they start thinking about penalties?

It would seem they already have, both sides very reluctant to take any risks. The Dutch have stopped going long for some reason, back to their passing at the back without actually going anyway.

Madness for the equaliser!

21:16 , Matt Verri

21:15 , Matt Verri

95 mins: A bit more structure from the Dutch now, Van Dijk has returned to the back-line.

Got to feel their best chance is to keep going direct though, Argentina couldn’t deal with it. Weghorst just too big for them.

21:13 , Matt Verri

93 mins: Players better be on their best behaviour with this ref. You sneeze near him and it’s a card.

Things have calmed down a bit in the opening minutes of extra-time - believe we’re now on 11 players on a yellow card.

Back underway!

21:10 , Matt Verri

Anyone’s guess what happens from here. Expect chaos.

Simon Collings at Lusail Stadium

21:09 , Matt Verri

Someone is getting sent off here tonight. Well, actually it’s this morning now.

FT: Netherlands 2-2 Argentina

21:05 , Matt Verri

WOW.

A direct approach from the Netherlands and they’ve got themselves level.

The two benches are clashing again, Van Gaal trying to calm things down. We’ve got some 30 minutes in store.

GOAL! Netherlands 2-2 Argentina | Wout Weghorst 90+11’

21:03 , Matt Verri

THEY’VE DONE IT! ASTONISHING!

Free-kick is so clever, slipped through to Weghorst and on the stretch he manages to beat Martinez.

We’re going to extra-time!

21:01 , Matt Verri

90+9 mins: A ridiculous challenge on the edge of the box, the Netherlands have one last chance!

This will pretty much be the final kick. 20 yards out, perfect position for the right-footer.

20:59 , Matt Verri

90+8 mins: Two minutes to go!

Dumfries lumps it up to the orange giants, Argentina head it away and they earn a very, very cheap free-kick. Paredes bought that, to put it mildly.

20:57 , Matt Verri

90+5 mins: Balls flying into the Argentina box, Otamendi with a brilliant header and earns a free-kick in doing so.

Argentina have made it through half of the added-time unscathed.

20:54 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Straight into the wall, celebrated like a goal in the stands!

And now two Argentina players go for the same ball in the air, clash heads. Couldn’t have scripted that any better for themselves.

20:52 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Ten minutes added on!

And Gakpo is fouled right on the edge of the box. Argentina have got a long, long time to hold on.

20:51 , Matt Verri

89 mins: And now we have a full on melee.

Paredes with a poor challenge, and then punts the ball at the Dutch bench as they fly up to complain. About ten subs charge on the pitch and start a riot, handbags all over the shop.

Yellow card to everyone that catches the referee’s eye.

20:49 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Messi blocked on the halfway line, Berghuis fell for that. And he gets a yellow card for his complaints.

Argentina resorting to whatever they can to see out these final few minutes.

20:47 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Almost!

Wow. Weghorst absolutely hammers an effort into the side-netting, so close to beating Martinez at his near post. Corner.

Swung in, headed away. Argentina looking a bit shaky all of a sudden.

GOAL! Netherlands 1-2 Argentina | Wout Weghorst 83

20:44 , Matt Verri

AND OUT OF NOTHING THEY SCORE!

Ball just whipped in, Weghorst there at the near post and he flicks it into the far corner.

Game. On.

20:44 , Matt Verri

82 mins: Another sub for Argentina, Martinez on up front as Alvarez is brought off. Decent man to have off the bench.

The Netherlands are now swinging crosses into the box, Van Dijk staying up top. All pretty aimless though.

20:40 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Weghorst on, Depay off. Netherlands just going to be very direct now you’d imagine.

Still they’ve only had one shot all match, so disappointing. Tagliafico is on for Argentina, as is Pezzella.

Simon Collings at Lusail Stadium

20:36 , Matt Verri

Noppert had boldly said he fancied himself against a Messi penalty tonight. He said Messi was “human”. I’m not sure he is.

20:35 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Noppert went up to Messi and had a word before he took it, the Argentina star just nodded along.

Goalkeeper didn’t move for the penalty, Messi whipped it into the corner. So composed.

GOAL! Netherlands 0-2 Argentina | Lionel Messi 73'

20:34 , Matt Verri

MESSI DOUBLES THE LEAD!

His fourth goal of the World Cup, and it’s surely one that sends them into the semi-finals!

PENALTY ARGENTINA!

20:33 , Matt Verri

And this could seal it!

Molina chops inside in the box, Dumfries falls for it and brings him doen. VAR doesn’t need to bother looking at that.

Over to Messi...

20:31 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Romero wins a cheap free-kick for his side, he’s not exactly in a rush to get up either.

Argentina fans in fine voice as ever, their side look so comfortable. The Netherlands have had one shot all match... ONE.

It was off target too, early on as Bergwijn dragged an effort wide. Not good enough.

20:29 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Paredes on for Argentina, as De Paul trudges off. He was a doubt before the match.

The Dutch pretty much have five players stood up front now - just the small matter of getting the ball to them.

20:26 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Blind off, De Jong on for the Netherlands. A bit more attacking ambition from Van Gaal.

Got to imagine that will be a back four now, with De Jong up front and Ake at left-back.

20:24 , Matt Verri

63 mins: The crowd thought it was in!

Went to the goalkeeper’s side, inches away from the top corner but it catches the roof of the net instead. Messi deserves a goal for this performance.

20:23 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Messi running the show, he’s been absolutely sensational again.

Van Dijk gets fed up and just shoves him over 20 yards out, this is a great position for the free-kick.

Dan Kilpatrick at Lusail Stadium

20:21 , Matt Verri

Inconsistent refereeing by Mateu Lahoz, who booked Romero for a deliberate handball in the first half but decides against doing the same for a similar foul by Messi.

20:21 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Real chance for Argentina!

Messi slides it through to Mac Allister and he can drive at the Dutch defence. De Paul completely free to his right, overhits the pass though and the opportunity goes.

20:19 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Depay has been so poor tonight, giving the ball away pretty much on every occassion he comes to him.

Argentina slowing the pace of the match down when they win it back, ticking away the seconds. This has been a bit of a cruise for them so far.

20:17 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Ball lobbed up over Messi’s head, the Argentina captain responds by pretty much catching the ball.

For once the referee decides not to bring out the yellow card, you can certain privileges when you’re name is Lionel Messi.

20:15 , Matt Verri

54 mins: De Jong wide to Blind, low cross into the box is cleared.

Blind pretty much playing as a left winger now, getting so far forward. Argentina happy to continue letting the Dutch pass it around at the back.

The title he really wants...

20:14 , Matt Verri

20:12 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Bold from Acuna, decides to take Dumfries on for pace. Gives up and claims he’s been fouled, never going to get that free-kick though.

Bit more urgency from the Netherlands since the restart, not much quality though.

20:09 , Matt Verri

48 mins: Acuna gets forward on the left, cross is charged down. Will be a corner for Argentina.

Flicked on at the near post, nobody following in at the back post though. Fernandez keeps it in play and heads for the corner - slightly early for that perhaps.

Simon Collings at Lusail Stadium

20:07 , Matt Verri

We wondered how Van Gaal would change it and the answer is a double substitution. The shape of the team shouldn’t change too much, though.

Berghuis and Koopmeiners on for Bergwijn and De Roon.

Back underway!

20:06 , Matt Verri

Here we go, decisive 45 minutes ahead.

20:02 , Matt Verri

Bergwijn, Gakpo, Depay... they haven’t really done anything.

De Jong keeps dropping deep, almost four centre-backs at time for the Netherlands.

The Dutch have been cagey for most of this tournament, but that has to change now.

Ridiculous assist

19:57 , Matt Verri

Simon Collings at Lusail Stadium

19:54 , Matt Verri

A very cagey first-half that was broken by a moment of magic from Messi. Just a ridiculous pass. Neither side created much other than that. Intrigued to see if/how Van Gaal changes it.

HT: Netherlands 0-1 Argentina

19:51 , Matt Verri

Niggly half, with one real piece of quality.

That came from Messi to open up the Netherlands’ defence, and set up Molina for the only goal of the opening 45 minutes.

Dutch have to improve significantly.

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

19:47 , Matt Verri

45+2 mins: Five minutes added on, might be a bit more than that too.

Alvarez frustrated to lose the ball and trips De Jong up, that will be a free-kick. And the referee has flown over to the bench to book Weghorst, who jumped up to complain.

Officials keeping an eye on everyone in the stadium, it seems.

19:45 , Matt Verri

45 mins: This referee does love a yellow card. Romero with the handball, the card is out with the ball still in contact with the defender’s arm.

To be fair that was the right call, Romero pretty much punched it away as he misjudged the flight of the ball.

19:43 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Timber into the book for demanding a yellow card. He got his wish, though not quite in the way he had hoped.

Acuna joins him for the initial challenge, really poor one on Dumfries who is in a lot of pain.

Dan Kilpatrick at Lusail Stadium

19:41 , Matt Verri

From the vantage point of the Lusail press box, six stories and a long staircase above ground level, it was impossible to pick out that pass -- and yet Messi saw it, seemingly without looking.

Remarkable assist which has opened up a cagey game.

19:40 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Messi is right up for this, surrounded by three orange shirts in the box but still wriggles himself into some room, shot straight at the goalkeeper.

The Dutch haven’t offered anything yet in attack - that has to change at some point, obviously, but no sign of any increase in urgency yet.

19:38 , Matt Verri

38 mins: De Paul down holding his head, getting some treatment. He’s laughing with the physios so we’ll assume it’s not particularly serious.

Argentina fans in fine voice now, after that moment of magic from their leading man.

GOAL! Netherlands 0-1 Argentina | Nahuel Molina 35'

19:35 , Matt Verri

STUNNING FROM ARGENTINA!

Messi makes this with a piece of pure genius. Picks it up in midfield, drops his shoulder and then picks out a sensational pass through to Molina.

He runs onto it, pokes the ball into the bottom corner. Brilliant goal.

19:33 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Here we go, some space at last.

Gakpo leads the Dutch counter, Dumfires free to his right but he overhits the pass. Chance has gone.

Argentina come forward themselves, De Paul with a tame effort from 20 yards out. Straight at the goalkeeper.

Simon Collings at Lusail Stadium

19:31 , Matt Verri

Van Gaal warned in his pre-match press conference this would not be like the World Cup classics in 1974, ‘78 and ‘98. He wasn’t lying.

19:30 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Roles have switched, Argentina now with the ball at the back and the Netherlands showing no real interest in winning it back.

Grand total of three shots in the match so far, none of which have been on target.

19:28 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Ake with a long ball forward, Gakpo shoves Otamendi over and that will be a very obvious free-kick.

This game needs a goal. If you were being generous, you’d say it’s a tactical battle. Or you could just say it’s been boring.

Dan Kilpatrick at Lusail Stadium

19:25 , Matt Verri

Scaloni is prowling the edge of his technical area, constantly gesturing and appearing to almost coach his players through the game.

From way up here in the press box there’s been no sign of Van Gaal but presumably he’s a little more serene.

19:24 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Bergwijn snatches at a shot from the edge of the box, that was a really decent chance.

Gakpo almost followed in at the back post, but gave up on it just as he looked like he might get there.

19:22 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Things open up for Messi, 25 yards out nearly and he whips a left-footed strike at goal. Always comfortably over the bar.

Netherlands might want to get a lot closer to him though, had so much space there.

19:21 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Depay runs the channel well, holds it up and wins a corner for his side and Otamendi pokes the ball away.

Taken short, then whipped in towards the near post and it’s headed away. Bit of a waste.

19:19 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Referee has a word with Di Maria on the bench, who is a bit too keen to get involved.

No real chances for either side yet, cancelling each other out really so far.

Simon Collings at Lusail Stadium

19:17 , Matt Verri

I think the Netherlands will be pretty happy with this start. They’ve looked comfortable on the ball and are moving it around well. De Jong starting to get a grip on the game.

19:15 , Matt Verri

16 mins: First real attack from the Netherlands, clipped to the back post where Dumfries has come flying in.

He volleys it back across the face of goal, Blind can’t quite get up enough to get on the end of it.

19:14 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Referee surrounded by Argentina players, furious after Romero was penalised. He slid in and looked to have won the ball, but the whistle came.

Bit harsh that. Tottenham man never one to back off a challenge.

Dan Kilpatrick at Lusail Stadium

19:12 , Matt Verri

Goalkeepers beware: don’t take chances when Alvarez is buzzing around the box. After pickpocketing Mat Ryan in the last-16, the Manchester City striker almost intercepted a poor Noppert clearance.

Both sides probing for openings in the early stages.

19:11 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Messi brings the ball down, opts not to shoot from the edge of the box and he lays it wide to Acuna instead.

The wing-back absolutely hammers it across the face of goal, would have been a threat to someone’s life had they tried to head it. Slightly overhit, to put it mildly.

19:08 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Netherlands’ turn to see plenty of the ball at the back, neither side with much interest in pressing.

Wow, Noppert nearly makes an awful error passing out from the back. Inches away from being intercepted.

19:05 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Loose pass from Depay and Argentina can break, space has opened up for them.

Messi slide the pass through, comes back to De Paul on the edge of the box and he fires an effort at goal. Well blocked.

Simon Collings at the Lusail Stadium

19:03 , Matt Verri

As we thought from the teamsheet, it’s a back-three for Argentina. Not completely out of the blue for them. They did it in the second-half v Australia in the last round.

19:03 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Messi drops deep to pick up the ball, Blind and De Jong immediately fly up to try and close him down.

Worked around them, Argentina come forward on the left. Low cross in from Acuna, cleared away. Netherlands happy to sit off in the early stages.
