Netherlands 2-0 Qatar LIVE! De Jong and Gakpo seal win – World Cup 2022 result and updates today

Netherlands vs Qatar LIVE!

The Dutch booked their spot in the World Cup last 16 thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Frenkie de Jong, which saw off a poor – and pointless – Qatar side at Al Bayt Stadium. The host nation finish their home tournament with three defeats – and they barely laid a glove on Louis van Gaal’s side today.

After a couple of early near misses for the Netherlands, Gakpo – who is attracting transfer interest from Manchester United and others – was gifted too much space on the edge of the Qatar box and duly drilled home to make it 1-0. De Jong then doubled the lead when he followed up a decent save from goalkeeper Barsham to keep out Memphis Depay.

And that was enough for the Dutch to seal top spot in Group A and a place in the knockout rounds. And you can see how the game unfolded on Standard Sport’s live blog below.

FULL TIME

Berghuis rattles the crossbar late on and it’s bizarre that this hasn’t finished 3-0 or 4-0.

But at 2-0, it’s still been the simplest of simple nights for the Dutch, thanks to Cody Gakpo and Frenkie de Jong’s goals, either side of the half time break.

They never got out of second gear, but they never really needed to. They’re through to the last 16 as Group A winners.

Added time

16:48 , Dominic Booth

90 mins: The officials have indicated there will be six added minutes.

Why? Just why?

16:47 , Dominic Booth

89 mins: As this game winds towards its inevitable conclusion, this is the key goal in Group A that – as it stands – is sending Senegal through, and sending Ecuador home.

16:45 , Dominic Booth

87 mins: Yes, yes, I know... Kenneth Taylor sounds like he should have played for England in the 1950s. In fact he’s a 20-year-old midfielder for Ajax.

The Dutch are toying with Qatar here. They could score another if they wanted to.

16:44 , Dominic Booth

86 mins: De Jong eventually gets his rest. He’s replaced by Kenneth Taylor.

16:41 , Dominic Booth

83 mins: It’s keystone cops inside the Dutch box and the home fans are furious that the referee has blown for a foul in the other direction... but it was clear Van Dijk was fouled by the substitute Muntari.

Wout Weghorst is going to join Koopmeiners on the pitch. Gakpo is one of the men replaced, as is De Roon.

16:37 , Dominic Booth

80 mins: You suspect some of these Dutch players on the pitch wouldn’t mind being hauled off, by this stage. Koopmeiners is going to be the next substitute introduced.

Netherlands fans might want to see the likes of Gakpo and De Jong wrapped in cotton wool, but Van Gaal is keeping them on.

Where the action is happening

16:34 , Dominic Booth

77 mins: Clive Tyldlesley has just said on ITV commentary that he’ll forgive viewers for switching to the other game.

We’ll forgive you for leaving this blog, too, as long as you give the other one a quick look.

16:32 , Dominic Booth

74 mins: Dumfries tries to squeeze in a third, via a deflection, as he storms down the right.

Updates from that Senegal versus Ecuador game are right here, by the way – and there’s been another goal. Senegal are back in front!

16:30 , Dominic Booth

72 mins: Well, well, well.

Ecuador would appear to have equalised in the other game. That means they’ll go through with Netherlands as it stands. It also means a defeat for in this game – however unlikely – would spell trouble for the Dutch.

NO GOAL!

16:28 , Dominic Booth

Handball is duly given and we’re at 2-0.

GOAL?

16:26 , Dominic Booth

69 mins: The Dutch walk in a third goal! Janssen and Berghuis combine and it’s 3-0.

Or is it? There’s a VAR check going on for a possible handball in the build up by Gakpo.

16:24 , Dominic Booth

66 mins: It’s Klaassen and Memphis who are being replaced. A decent night’s work for them.

Subs

16:23 , Dominic Booth

65 mins: Al Haydos, Madibo and Ali are all replaced, with Boudiaf, Muntari and Asad all getting a run-out for Qatar.

Berghuis and Janssen are being readied by Van Gaal.

16:20 , Dominic Booth

63 mins: Qatar’s goalscorer from their game against Senegal – their only World Cup goalscorer ever – Muntari, is about to come on.

Time for the Netherlands to ring the changes, too? They might as well start resting people.

16:18 , Dominic Booth

61 mins: Qatar have numbers here, but they don’t make use of the space the Dutch have afforded them. Mohammad’s cross isn’t right, now Ali is down holding his head after a collision of some sort.

16:16 , Dominic Booth

58 mins: It might be a case of how many goals the Netherlands want to score here.

They’re sitting off a little now, so Qatar are enjoying more of the game.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

16:14 , Dominic Booth

56 mins: Nice stuff from Qatar down the left, but Hassan’s cross is overhit – and there’s nobody there gambling to latch onto it anyway.

The two goals

16:12 , Dominic Booth

54 mins: It could become three, four or five by the finish, you suspect. Here are the goals we’ve had so far (UK viewers only):

16:09 , Dominic Booth

51 mins: Qatar completely switched off then, they thought they job was done when Barsham saved well from Memphis at close range.

Nobody was watching De Jong ghost in to rifle the rebound into the net. Netherlands on easy street now.

GOAL! Qatar 0-2 Netherlands | De Jong ‘50

16:07 , Dominic Booth

49 mins: Lovely feet from De Jong to escape a challenge on the edge of the box and the Barcelona man then follows it in and scores! Memphis’ shot was parried and the rebound was a simple task.

16:05 , Dominic Booth

48 mins: Ake defended the set piece well, with Netherlands getting themselves on the ball and settling into this second 45 minute period.

They’ll want a second, just to be sure of things.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

16:04 , Dominic Booth

46 mins: A free-kick for Qatar early in the second half.

SECOND HALF

16:03 , Dominic Booth

We’re back up and running.

First half thoughts

15:51 , Dominic Booth

All too easy for Van Gaal’s men, that. Gakpo is very impressive, but Blind and Dumfries were getting plenty of joy from the wing-back positions as well.

Qatar at least showed some fighting spirit after going a goal down, but you suspect they won’t have enough to trouble the Netherlands, who are sitting pretty at the Group A summit.

HALF TIME

15:48 , Dominic Booth

That half of football lost its tempo after Gakpo’s goal. Clearly, the Netherlands know it’s pretty much job done.

Can Qatar put a spanner in the works in the second half, or will it be more Dutch dominance? We shall see.

Added time

15:45 , Dominic Booth

45 mins: We now head into three added minutes.

Senegal are 1-0 up, by the way, that penalty went in.

15:44 , Dominic Booth

44 mins: Some news from the other match in Group A, in which Senegal have won a penalty against Ecuador – you can follow it here.

Not much going on in this game, although Qatar are battling manfully.

Golden boot race

15:42 , Dominic Booth

42 mins: It’s shaping up to be an interesting battle.

15:40 , Dominic Booth

41 mins: Gakpo with another powerful shot, although this time it’s well over the bar – and would have been offside in any case. He only needs a sniff, though.

15:40 , Dominic Booth

40 mins: Klassen is robbed of the ball by the menacing Hassan, but Qatar’s lack of end product scuppers them again. Afif is too isolated up there.

15:37 , Dominic Booth

37 mins: Mohammad and Al Haydos give Ake a bit of trouble down the Qatar right. The hosts have producd a response, of sorts, here. Felix Sanchez is doing his trademark gesturing on the touchline, still looking very unimpressed.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

15:35 , Dominic Booth

35 mins: Hassan looks dangerous overlapping from his position as a left-sided centre-back. Nobody is on the end of his fizzing cross, though.

15:34 , Dominic Booth

34 mins: Come on then, Qatar, make this interesting for the neutrals and regain a semblance of pride...

They’re at least enjoying a spell of possession right now.

15:31 , Dominic Booth

31 mins: Predictably, it’s the Oranje searching for a second rather than Qatar showing anything like attacking impetus at the other end.

As it stands, Van Gaal’s men would top the group, so there’s no pressure on them to score more.

15:29 , Dominic Booth

29 mins: That was all too easy for Cody Gakpo, and with the form he’s showing in this World Cup, he was never going to miss.

Manchester United and others will be on high alert, given his PSV transfer situation. The boy can play.

GOAL! Qatar 0-1 Netherlands | Gakpo ‘27

15:26 , Dominic Booth

27 mins: They did wake up, a lovely pass chipped into the onrunning Memphis, who tried to take it and turn in one movement, but gets tackled.

It then opens up for Gakpo, who scores with a fantastic finish!

15:25 , Dominic Booth

25 mins: A genuine shot on goal from Qatar there, as Hassan attacks the corner and steers it goalwards, but over.

Wake up, Holland.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

15:24 , Dominic Booth

24 mins: A bit shaky in the Netherlands back line as Van Dijk concedes another corner. He isn’t happy with his teammates’ communication.

15:23 , Dominic Booth

23 mins: If someone can explain to me why Netherlands are playing three centre-backs today, that would be helpful.

They might be called into action for the first time in the game now, though, as I type that. Qatar corner.

15:20 , Dominic Booth

20 mins: Afif needs support as Qatar break away but everyone is ahead of the ball and it’s given away. Frustration for the home crowd.

15:18 , Dominic Booth

18 mins: Can’t be sure how many of these Qatar fans are real (the stadium isn’t full) but fair play to them, they’re making a good old noise, and have done throughout the tournament.

The Dutch win another corner.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

15:16 , Dominic Booth

16 mins: The Dutch players surround the referee. They want a penalty for a foul on De Roon... but no VAR check.

Instead the corner comes in, and is headed clear.

Attack v defence

15:14 , Dominic Booth

14 mins: Ake and Van Dijk are pushing up into the Qatar half when they get the ball, which is alloing De Jong and Klassen to ghost into space much higher up than normal, as well.

Attack versus defence right now. Depay blazes a shot well over.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

15:12 , Dominic Booth

13 mins: Blind is getting all sorts of joy down the left flank. Klassen is picking it up and feeding him in some nice positions, and it feels only a matter of time before Memphis and Gakpo get the right cross or pull-back from the former Manchester United utility man.

15:11 , Dominic Booth

11 mins: The Netherlands just need to be patient here. They’re sending it long too early and bundling Qatar players when it’s not necessary. They’ll get their chances, you feel sure of that.

15:09 , Dominic Booth

10 mins: Another clash of heads involving Mohammad also sees Daley Blingd go down, as Afif sends a dangerous delivery into the Dutch box, which they just about clear.

15:07 , Dominic Booth

8 mins: Qatar full-back Mohammad seems to have a slight problem; he took a knock while jumping for a header with Ake.

Gakpo gets snuffed out when trying to surge forward, to the delight of the home crowd. Netherlands win it back quickly though, they’re launching wave after wave of attack here.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

15:05 , Dominic Booth

5 mins: It feels like the pattern of this game has already been established: Dutch possession, Qatar sitting deep and trying to frustrate before countering.

15:04 , Dominic Booth

3 mins: Van Gaal and his assistants, including Edgar Davids, are in the running for best dressed coaching team at this World Cup, for sure.

Some early work for Noppert in the Dutch goal after a sloppy pass in midfield allows Ali to shoot.

It’s a scramble at the other end as Klassen and Blind both have efforts blocked, with Qatar all at sea.

15:01 , Dominic Booth

1 min: No surprise to see the orange shirts dominate possession early on, with Memphis stretching to reach a long ball over the top, to no avail.

KICK OFF

15:00 , Dominic Booth

Let’s go then. Qatar’s final World Cup 2022 match. Will it be the Netherlands’ too?

14:51 , Dominic Booth

The players will be out shortly for the anthems and the big inflatable World Cup thing in the centre circle.

Then we’ll be off and running.

14:44 , Dominic Booth

The dressing rooms were looking pristine earlier. The players are heading back in there now, ahead of kick off in 15 minutes.

Van Gaal aiming big

14:27 , Dominic Booth

This is what he said in his pre-match press conference about getting through the groups:

“I think you always have to identify the goal, the purpose for which you are here.

“Then you can work your way towards that purpose. If you don’t identify that purpose and say ‘the last 16 or the quarter-finals is enough’, that isn’t the right way to do things.”

Who needs what?

14:16 , Dominic Booth

Netherlands know that a draw today against Qatar will be enough to qualify, regardless of what happens in the other Group A game. A defeat may even be enough, if Ecuador win, but neither result will guarantee top spot – three points should do exactly that, unless Ecuador beat Senegal by a bigger margin.

Standard Sport have a live blog running for that game which you can follow here – and below is what the bookies think:

  • Ecuador odds: 32/21

  • Draw odds: 11/5

  • Senegal odds: 43/20

A spokesperson for BritishGambler.co.uk said: “Bookmakers expect this to be a very close game. After all, Ecuador’s win probability is 39.6% for this game, while Senegal has a win probability of 31.7%. So, it’s obviously very tight. On top of that, the probability of a draw is 31.3%, so this game can clearly go any way.

“The most likely scores for this game, according to average odds, are 1-0 to Ecuador, as well as 0-0 and 1-1 draws.”

All of that adds up to fairly good news for Louis van Gaal and the Netherlands – providing they hold up their end of the bargain.

Tournament outright odds

14:06 , Dominic Booth

We know that the boomakers are heavily favouring Netherlands for this match – not without reason – but what have the first two rounds of group games told them about the team that will win the World Cup.

Betfair odds on 2022 World Cup winner:

  • Brazil: 5/2

  • Spain, England, France: 13/2

  • Argentina: 17/2

  • Portugal, Netherlands: 11/1

  • Belgium: 18/1

Last chance for Qatar to impress

13:59 , Dominic Booth

Qatar will be hoping to see something from star striker Akram Afif, who was talked about before the tournament but has been unable to inspire them to a single point yet.

The host nation would love to bow out with a bang – and put a dent in the Dutch last 16 prospects to boot.

Depay starts for the Netherlands

13:51 , Marc Mayo

Despite Louis van Gaal suggesting he would not rush back his star striker, Memphis Depay leads the line for the Netherlands alongside Cody Gakpo.

As expected, there are changes in the midfield as Marten de Roon and Davy Klaassen start.

Matthijs de Ligt misses out to Jurrien Timber in defence.

Today’s Qatar team

13:47 , Marc Mayo

Qatar XI: Barsham; Miguel, Hassan, Mohamad, Khoukhi, Ahmed; Al-Haydos, Hatim, Madibo; Afif, Ali.

How the Dutch line up

Netherlands XI: Noppert; Timber, Van Dijk, Ake; Dumfries, De Jong, Klaassen, De Roon, Blind; Gakpo, Depay.

Right then...

The Dutch head to the stadium

Never the longest journey in Qatar, which is probably why they claim it’s been such an eco-friendly World Cup...

We are just over 90 minutes away from Netherlands vs Qatar and that means team news is right around the corner...

The Dutch are in town

Group A permutations

13:13 , Marc Mayo

So, Qatar are out.

The Netherlands need only a point to qualify and will need Ecuador to suffer a heavier defeat than themselves to qualify if they lose.

The Dutch and South Americans are currently separated by only Fair Play ratings, in which Netherlands have the advantage. Therefore first place come could down to goal difference... or yellow cards.

They both sit on four points and Senegal are one back, meaning they likely need a win against Ecuador.

Head-to-head record

It may surprise you to discover these teams have never previously met!

Evening Standard score prediction

13:02 , Marc Mayo

A sombre end to the World Cup for the hosts beckons as the Dutch look to build confidence for the knockout rounds.

A 3-0 win.

12:57 , Marc Mayo

Predicted Qatar XI: Barsham; Miguel, Hassan, Mohamad, Khoukhi, Ahmed; Al-Haydos, Boudiaf, Madibo; Muntari, Ali.

Early Qatar team news

12:53 , Marc Mayo

Mohammed Muntari may be one of many new faces introduced for Qatar having netted off the bench against Senegal.

12:46 , Marc Mayo

Predicted Netherlands XI: Noppert; Timber, Van Dijk, Ake; Dumfries, De Jong, Klaassen, De Roon, Blind; Gakpo, Bergwijn.

Early Netherlands team news

12:41 , Marc Mayo

Louis van Gaal switched around his team for the draw with Ecuador last time out, leaving Vincent Janssen and Matthijs de Ligt on the bench.

The underwhelming performance means few players’ positions are safe but Memphis Depay is unlikely to make his first start of the World Cup having recently overcome injury.

Marten de Roon, Davy Klaassen and Matthijs de Ligt are all pushing to start.
