Netherlands 3-1 USA LIVE! World Cup 2022 result, match stream and latest updates today

Netherlands vs USA – LIVE!

The Netherlands became the first country into the World Cup quarter-finals as they beat the United States 3-1 at the Khalifa International Stadium.

A 10th-minute effort by Memphis Depay and another from Daley Blind with the last kick of the first half paved the way for the Dutch. Substitute Haji Wright scrambled in a reply for the United States in the 76th minute to give the Americans hope but Denzel Dumfries’s volley sealed a seventh quarter-final appearance for the Dutch.

Louis van Gaal’s Dutch side grabbed the lead with their first attack when a slick move ended with Dumfries cutting a perfect pass back for Barcelona forward Depay to stroke home. Dumfries then played a carbon copy ball for Blind to make it 2-0 and put his side in cruise control. Wright bundled home from a Christian Pulisic cross but Dumfries crowned a great display to finish off the Americans.

Netherlands 3 - 1 United States

Inexperience shows for USA

17:08 , Matt Verri

President Joe Biden cheered on the USA ahead of kick-off, releasing a video saying ‘it’s called soccer, go USA’, but they ended up being taught a lesson in finishing by the Netherlands.

The Dutch ran out 3-1 winners to restore the name ‘football’ to the sport, leaving USA winless in 12 games against European nations and having not made it beyond last-16 at a World Cup since 2002.

FT: Netherlands 3-1 USA

16:53 , Matt Verri

The Netherlands are the first side through to the quarter-finals!

A couple of nervy moments, but really the Dutch were in control for most of that match.

They’re into the last-eight, where they will face either Argentina or Australia. You can guess who they’d prefer...

16:50 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Gakpo gets a bit of a rest, a whole three minutes. Weghorst on in his place.

There will be no fourth World Cup goal for Gakpo, at least not yet. He’ll get another chance in the quarter-finals.

16:47 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Six minutes added on.

Going to have to be the most incredible six minutes for the USA!

Nizaar Kinsella at the Khalifa International Stadium

16:45 , Matt Verri

This World Cup might have come too soon for USA who are the second youngest side int he competition and youngest in the last-16.

They can be heartened by their display but must learn not to switch off when defending crosses to the far post and be more ruthless in front of goal.

16:43 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Bergwijn happy to keep the ball in the corner, it’s approaching that time now for the Dutch.

The USA win it back and look to break, that is until De Jong produces as cynical a foul as you’ll ever see. A knee-high kick.

16:40 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Do the USA have another burst in them? Going to need some final ten minutes.

Simons is on to replace Depay, while it briefly kicks off on the pitch as De Jong does a bit of time wasting. All to be expected.

GOAL! Netherlands 3-1 USA | Denzel Dumfries 81'

16:38 , Matt Verri

THAT SHOULD SEAL IT!

The wind goes out of the USA charge. Ball whipped in, Dumfries there at the back post and he volleys it home. Two assists and a goal!

16:34 , Matt Verri

78 mins: It really is game on, Pulisic very nearly puts Wright clean through.

Just too much on the pass, Noppert flies off his line to get there first and clear it away.

Bergwijn then played through at the other end, get the attempted dink finisha all wrong. Some finish in store.

GOAL! Netherlands 2-1 USA | Haji Wright 76'

16:33 , Matt Verri

GAME. ON.

Pulisic with the low cross, flicks off Wright and somehow loops into the far corner. Bizarre finish, but it’s worked perfectly.

16:32 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Off the line, Wright so close!

It’s an awful back pass from Depay, Wright goes round the goalkeeper which takes him wide... Dumfries gets back to clear it away on the line.

16:28 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Sensational from Turner!

That’s absolutely brilliant. First shot comes in from outside the box, parries it straight to Depay who looks certain to head that home for his second.

The Arsenal man sticks out a hand though to deny him.

16:26 , Matt Verri

69 mins: De Jong finds Dumfries, who is looking for this hat-trick of assists.

Not far away from getting it, lovely cross into the box but Zimmerman is there to thump it to safety.

16:24 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Weah and McKennie off, Aaronson and Wright the two to come on. Robinson will continue for now.

Will be a fair bit of stoppage time added on you’d imagine, even if that particular fad seems to have calmed down a bit.

16:21 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Changes for the USA, it’s very much becoming ‘now or never’ territory.

Robinson is down on the far side looking in a fair bit of pain, that might change the planned subs.

16:18 , Matt Verri

61 mins: Big problems for the USA, as the free-kick is cleared and four orange shirts fly forward.

Gakpo through to Depay, he’s slowed down. Gakpo’s shot is then blocked, falls for Depay and Turner tips the effort over the bar.

16:16 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Crosses being swung into the Dutch box, the latest by Adams but Van Dijk is there to head away.

There will be another one coming in now, as Pulisic is hacked down by Koopmeiners. He earns the first yellow card of the match.

16:15 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Pulisic skips past Van Dijk and wins a free-kick for his side, rare bit of rash defending from the Liverpool man.

Very out of character - the Dutch are slightly rattled at the moment.

16:11 , Matt Verri

54 mins: And another decent chance, Reyna cuts inside and picks out McKennie on the edge of the box. Lifts the effort over the bar.

He’s furious with himself, screams out in frustration. Feel like something could be coming for the USA though - one goal in the next 20 minutes or so and we have a real game on our hands.

16:09 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Pulisic inside onto his right foot, space opens up for the shot but it’s straight at Noppert. USA giving this a real go, as you’d expect. Not going to go quietly.

Issue is how much space that leaves the Dutch at the other end of the pitch.

16:07 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Almost an own goal!

Zimmerman sticks out a leg to cut out Dumfries’ cross into the six-yard box, diverts it towards his own goal and Turner makes a smart save. This could be an end-to-end half.

16:06 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Corner for the USA, Pulisic over to take it.

Falls for Ream, he pokes it at goal on the stretch and it’s hacked away on the line by Gakpo! Ream couldn’t get a proper connection, which gave Gakpo a chance to clear.

16:04 , Matt Verri

48 mins: Reyna has gone through the middle up front, with Pulisic on the left and Weah on the right.

The Netherlands immediately have a chance to break, Ream slides in to halt Bergwijn’s progress though.

Nizaar Kinsella at the Khalifa International Stadium

16:03 , Matt Verri

The USA had a full team huddle before the second half and have nothing to lose as they seek a stunning comeback in their last-16 tie with the Netherlands.

Back underway!

16:02 , Matt Verri

Up and running again.

Reyna on for Ferreira for the USA. Two changes for the Netherlands, Koopmeiners and Bergwijn on for De Roon and Klaassen.

15:57 , Matt Verri

The USA have had 63% possession in the opening 45 minutes, most of that was the centre-backs having it under no pressure.

It’s not been total football from the Dutch, except for that one move, but it’s been effective football. Will surely be more chances for them on the break too, as the USA have to go for it now.

Lovely flowing move!

15:54 , Matt Verri

Nizaar Kinsella at the Khalifa International Stadium

15:51 , Matt Verri

Denzel Dumfries has done it again with a low cross cut back turned in by Daley Blind to break USA hearts on the stroke of half-time.

Netherlands have simply been better in the final third but there is no difference between the two teams in terms of chances created or general play.

HT: Netherlands 2-0 USA

15:47 , Matt Verri

And that’s the final kick of the half.

That’s a massive blow for the USA, mountain to climb now. The Dutch have controlled this really well so far.

GOAL! Netherlands 2-0 USA | Daley Blind 45’1

15:46 , Matt Verri

BLIND DOUBLES THE LEAD!

Seconds before the break. Very similar to the first goal, low cross comes into the box from the right and this time it’s Blind running onto it and firing a first-time finish into the bottom corner.

15:45 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Dest with a great run, gets all the way into the box but runs out of steam and the effort is a tame one.

Match has really opened up, now Gakpo charges up the pitch for the Netherlands. Nobody can get up with him in time though, attack breaks down.

15:42 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Better spell this for the USA, just before half-time.

Ball falls for Weah just outside the box, lashes it at goal and it’s a relatively comfortable save. Low cross comes back in, Weah can’t pick out a team-mate though.

15:41 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Here we go, Weah with space to drive into on the right.

Into the box, Ferreira has a touch, so does Pulisic and eventually it’s overhit out to Robinson. His cross back in deflects into the arms of Noppert.

15:40 , Matt Verri

40 mins: This time the Dutch do press right up the pitch, Turner and Zimmerman just about avoid disaster.

It ends up back with the centre-backs though after a brief foray into the Netherlands half - the USA are being completely stifled.

15:37 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Van Dijk takes an age to send a free-kick forward. Will assume that was due to a lack of options, and not time-wasting with this match still in the first-half!

USA get a bit of joy down the left, but the cross into the box is comfortably cleared away.

15:35 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Van Gaal has taken a bit of stick from the Dutch press for playing “boring” football. Not that he was too bothered about that, it’s fair to say.

Not exactly attacking from the Netherlands, but they look really solid at the back. One free-flowing move was all it took for them to take the lead - Van Gaal wiil be very happy with what he’s seen so far.

15:32 , Matt Verri

32 mins: USA struggling to get the ball through the lines. Ream and Zimmerman seeing plenty of it, but the likes of Pulisic and Weah have been starved in the last 15 minutes.

Just the one shot so far from them, that big early Pulisic chance.

15:29 , Matt Verri

29 mins: De Jong sets Depay away on the break, forward twists and turns before eventually winning a corner. Swung in, headed behind for another corner. The USA not too thrilled with that decision.

Take two from Gakpo - Zimmerman there to head it out.

15:27 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Wow Turner is lucky there, takes a heavy touch pretty much on his own goalline and Depay isn’t far away from pouncing.

Dest drifts inside and looks to flick the ball through to McKennie, too many orange shirts in the way.

15:25 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Feels like the sting has gone out of the USA slightly.

They probably want space to break into, instead the Dutch are sitting off and letting Zimmerman and Ream have it with no real pressure on them.

Nizaar Kinsella at Khalifa International Stadium

15:24 , Matt Verri

Netherlands’ goal was a moment that harks back to Johan Cruyff’s side as they produced a 20+ pass move before Memphis Depay stroked home Denzel Dumfries’s cut back.

Sensational goal and the USA had them on the back foot beforehand.

15:21 , Matt Verri

21 mins: That was... optimistic.

Ball over the top for Depay out wide, who decides there are no options and so goes for goal from an impossible angle.

Doesn’t catch it very sweetly, well wide. Turner’s strange dive made that look closer than it was.

15:18 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Brilliant from Robinson, right up until the final part.

Lovely turn and he then drives at the Dutch defence, into the box but he gets caught in about six minds. Comes to nothing - had to pick the pass sooner.

Another chance for the Netherlands to break, Gakpo slides Blind in but the finish is a wild one. That was a real chance.

15:16 , Matt Verri

16 mins: USA dominating possession, but the Dutch seem pretty happy with that. They’re looking to break quickly when they get it back, not much pace in that centre-back duo for the USA.

Depay and Gakpo just lurking on the halfway line.

15:13 , Matt Verri

13 mins: That’s such a blow for the USA, after their impressive start.

Adams puts Pulisic away as they look for an immediate response, low cross into the box is cleared. Netherlands break through Depay, through to Gakpo.

Couldn’t quite take it in his stride and the white shirts get back.

GOAL! Netherlands 1-0 USA | Memphis Depay 10'

15:10 , Matt Verri

NETHERLANDS IN FRONT!

Nothing rubbish about that! Lovely flowing move, worked out to the right wing.

Pulled back perfectly into Depay’s path, and he just sweeps it into the far corner.

15:09 , Matt Verri

9 mins: First chance for the Netherlands to break, as Blind finds Depay.

Cuts inside onto his right foot, think it’s a shot but it’s so badly shanked that it’s difficult to tell. Whatever it was, it was rubbish.

15:08 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Pulisic slides a pass through to Robinson, Dumfries slides in and knocks it behind for a corner just in time.

It’s the Chelsea man who swings the corner in, Ream can’t get there though and it’s through everyone, out of play. Not long before it comes back to Pulisic, fires the cross in and Ake heads away.

Nizaar Kinsella at Khalifa International Stadium

15:06 , Matt Verri

Christian Pulisic should have scored that chance. He looked offside but was played on by Nathan Ake and had all the time to pick his spot.

15:05 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Netherlands have got into this match at all yet. USA have flown out of the blows.

Weah in the box, looks to set it back to Dest but it’s just poked away from the full-back. Netherlands just looking to hang on for now.

15:02 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Really confident start from the USA, Netherlands haven’t had a kick yet. Dest and Robinson getting right up the pitch from full-back.

Dest stands a cross up into the box, briefly cleared but it comes back in, Pulisic clean through... saved!

Massive moment. Noppert with the save, Pulisic had to score!

KICK-OFF!

15:00 , Matt Verri

We’re underway in the last-16 stage of the World Cup.

This is where the fun really begins!

Here we go!

14:54 , Matt Verri

Teams are out, kick-off just a few minutes away now.

Time for the anthems!

Nizaar Kinsella at Khalifa International Stadium

14:51 , Matt Verri

There’s loud and sizeable support for the United States at the Khalifa International Stadium. There’s “USA” chants and ones of “we believe we will win.”

Netherlands fans are in the minority.

Not long now...

14:47 , Matt Verri

Dutch run to continue?

14:42 , Matt Verri

Now 18 matches unbeaten for the Netherlands, it’s been serene progress under Louis van Gaal.

They were certainly not at their best in the group stage but made it through with minimal fuss - will be see them really click into gear this afternoon?

Safe to say they’ll find this match a bit more of a challenge though than when they faced Qatar last time out.

Plenty of Dutch support!

Up next for the winner

14:32 , Matt Verri

The winner of this match will face whoever comes through this evening’s last-16 clash between Argentina and Australia.

Lionel Messi and Co got their World Cup off to a disastrous start against Saudi Arabia but things are firmly back on track now, and they’ll be eyeing a deep run.

Can Australia pull off a huge shock? Would be an almighty upset.

Anyway, that’s all to come. The USA and the Netherlands won’t be thinking about Argentina, or Australia, yet.

No sign of nerves...

14:24 , Matt Verri

Sergino Dest looking very chilled ahead of kick-off.

Last-16 clash at the World Cup, but the 22-year-old isn’t looking particularly bothered.

Neither have tasted defeat

14:19 , Matt Verri

Five teams made it through the group stage unbeaten - USA and the Netherlands are two of those!

The USA made it through Group B with five points, beating Iran and drawing with England and Wales, while Netherlands eased through Group A to top it with seven points. A draw with Ecuador was their only slight slip-up.

Two sides with plenty of reasons to be confident.

Sargent misses out

14:13 , Matt Verri

Josh Sargent not involved for the USA here, an ankle injury keeping him out of the squad. They have 14 subs on the bench as a result.

Particularly if it goes to extra-time, and maybe even penalties, having those biggers squads will be crucial.

We’ve had plenty of group-stage excitement... time to find out whether that carries into the knockout stages!

Van Gaal: USA one of best ‘teams'

14:05 , Matt Verri

Louis van Gaal believes the USA are of the most well-rounded sides left in the World Cup, a trait that will make them tough opposition this afternoon.

“It’s a process and perhaps the USA hadn’t expected that from this squad, but if you watch them play, it’s crystal clear they’ve had opportunities,” Van Gaal said. “I don’t think it’s a surprise to be quite frank.

“The USA has an excellent ‘team’. I would say one of the best ‘teams’, fine-tuned. It’s going to be a very tough match.

“But it’s nothing we can’t overcome. We also have a good team, that’s my view. We’ll have to wait and see in this match which of the two squads is the best.

“I’m not going to downplay the USA. On the contrary, they’re an example of what a good team is supposed to be.

“There are also teams who have progressed who are not a good ‘team’, but who have excellent individual qualities.”

Josh Sargent an injury doubt for USA

13:09 , Jonathan Gorrie

While there is good news on the injury front regarding Christian Pulisic, Norwich City forward Josh Sargent could miss out.

“With Josh we’re a little less so (hopeful), but we’ll see,” said coach Gregg Berhalter.

“At this stage of the tournament it’s go time. If you can push through it, you do. I’m sure he’ll have that mindset.”

Louis van Gaal shrugging off the critics

12:56 , Jonathan Gorrie

Louis van Gaal insists criticism about his style of play will not have any impact on his team now they’re into the knockout rounds.

“In 2014 it was exactly the same, it was not different. It was very negative,” said Van Gaal.

“But, exact same thing now, same old, so I’m used to it and I think my players are also used to it.

“We’re going to calmly continue on the path that we’ve embarked on.”

Pulisic delivers hospital update after injury while scoring for USA

12:49 , Jonathan Gorrie

Christian Pulisic was in good spirits after suffering a painful-looking injury as he scored the winning goal for the USA at the World Cup.

The United States defeated Iran 1-0 on Tuesday to book their place in the last-16 although Chelsea forward Pulisic was unable to celebrate the first-half strike.

Bundled into the net as he scored, the 24-year-old looked very worse for wear and was substituted.

USA boss Gregg Berhalter later revealed Pulisic had been taken to hospital, which is where the player himself provided an update on his injury.

Gakpo the standout in a Netherlands side short of masters

12:43 , Jonathan Gorrie

The Netherlands may have coasted into the last 16, but they have so far flown under the radar at this World Cup.

That is partly down to their style of play under manager Louis van Gaal, which has been labelled “boring” by the Dutch press and like “grinding teeth” by fans on social media.

“If you think it’s boring, why don’t you go home?” Van Gaal bristled at a reporter on Tuesday, after his side beat Qatar 2-0 to top Group A and book a last-16 tie with the United States tomorrow.

The Netherlands might be a functional side, but forward Cody Gakpo has been a shining light in some less-than-fluent displays.
