Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea LIVE! Willock seals win - Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea LIVE! Willock seals win - Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Joe Willock’s thunderous second-half goal earned Newcastle United a gritty 1-0 win over Chelsea at St James’ Park on Saturday and consolidated third place in the Premier League in their final fixture before the World Cup.

Miguel Almiron cut inside Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly and nudged the ball into the path of the onrushing Willock, who unleashed a powerful first-time effort that flew past goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to bag his second league goal in as many games.

After a fifth straight league win, Newcastle have 30 points and sit two points behind second-placed Manchester City while Chelsea are level on 21 points with Brighton & Hove Albion but behind them in eighth place, having played a game more.

Newcastle had a penalty appeal turned down after defender Dan Burn’s cross hit Trevoh Chalobah’s flailing arm late in the first half while Chelsea forward Armando Broja registered the only shot on target in an otherwise uneventful opening period.

Five minutes after the restart, Newcastle came close to taking the lead when Joelinton kept alive Kieran Trippier’s cross but Chris Wood was unable to connect and Mendy scrambled the ball away.

Almiron then cut it back for Sean Longstaff, who blazed his effort over the bar, while Wood was inches away from meeting Willock’s fine cross a few minutes later as Newcastle pushed for an opener but lacked a clinical edge.

Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher forced a flying save from Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope in the 66th minute as the visitors sprung into life, but any momentum they would have built from their best attack of the game was wiped out by Willock in the very next minute.

Chelsea to reflect after third consecutive defeat at Newcastle

20:26 , Jonathan Gorrie

Chelsea’s approach was always going to be justified by the end result.

Already six points behind high-flying Newcastle, Graham Potter understandably went with a defensive approach at St James’s Park.

It followed a dismal run of one win in the last four games for a side that had been knocked out of the cup and was sliding down the table.

Hardworking midfielders Conor Gallagher and Mason Mount were selected as no10s behind Armando Broja in an attack designed to play on the counter and work for the team.

It worked, to an extent, as third-placed Newcastle failed to get a shot on target in the first half.

However, at the other end, the west Londoners barely created a chance themselves.

Graham Potter makes emphatic Chelsea vow despite loss to Newcastle

20:25 , Jonathan Gorrie

Graham Potter vowed to “accept the struggles” at Chelsea after his side were beaten at Newcastle.

Joe Willock’s goal piled yet more misery on the former Brighton manager, who has now gone five games without a win, with his team beaten in their last three Premier League games.

As a result, Chelsea now sit eighth in the table and even behind Potter’s former side and have plenty to ponder over the World Cup break.

Injuries to key players have not helped Potter of course but his team struggled to create anything of note in fairly cautious display at St James’ Park. Armando Broja was selected up front in place of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but could not get into the game.

With Chelsea now not back in action until Boxing Day, the club have plenty to ponder. Potter is ready to push for January signings but will need to yield far more out of the players he inherited from Thomas Tuchel.

Speaking after the game, the Blues boss said: “We take the break to recharge and go again.

“There won’t be many of us. A lot of the guys go away, But those that remain will work and go again.

“We have had a tough period and there have been a lot a positives but also some negatives. Sometimes you have to accept the struggles you have. It is about regrouping and starting again. It is the second half of the season and there is a long way to go.”

Chelsea player ratings: Kovacic and Mount seriously struggle

19:45 , Jonathan Gorrie

Chelsea will go into the six-week break for the World Cup outside of the European places after a poor defeat away at Newcastle.

The Blues were dominated as they played for a draw at St James’s Park, with Joe Willock’s second-half long-range strike separating the two sides.

The 1-0 defeat leaves the Blues in eighth place and eight points away from the top four, nine behind Eddie Howe’s high-flying Toon.

Problems mount for Potter as Joe Willock piles more misery on Chelsea

19:44 , Jonathan Gorrie

Chelsea have plenty to consider during the World Cup break after Joe Willock’s winner piled more misery on Graham Potter.

The former Brighton boss is now on a run of five League games without a win and saw his side hardly compete in an attacking sense and beaten too easily defensively.

The reserved manner with which Potter’s side played, however, would have come as a surprise after a bold selection call. Lewis Hall was rewarded for his fine display against Manchester City with a start at left-wing back, while Armando Broja was selected to lead the line in place of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Nizaar Kinsella at St James’ Park

19:35 , Jonathan Gorrie

Anger, disappointment and embarrassment at end lead to Chelsea and Newcastle’s players pushing and shoving. The officials tried to get on top of it but it involved almost every player. It could well lead to an FA charge for the Blues for failing to control their players, or worse...

FT: Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea

19:33 , Jonathan Gorrie

90:00 - Chaos at the end but Willock’s goal enought to seal a Toon win and pile more misery on Graham Potter.

SEVEN MINUTES ADDED ON

19:22 , Jonathan Gorrie

90:00 - We’re set for a long one...

Hard task for Chelsea

19:21 , Jonathan Gorrie

88:00 - Newcastle aren’t prone to giving goals away and Chelsea aren’t exactly firing them in at the moment. All of their attacks have been without convinction.

Chelsea have been terrible playing out from the back against Newcastle.

Everything is so risk averse and it isn’t a great watch. If the Blues get out with a point, it might just be justified.

It’s a tough watch for Chelsea supporters who are used to going to these places and dominating.

Definitely a must-not-lose from Chelsea

18:50 , Jonathan Gorrie

56:00 - Probably a bit harsh to call it a defensive display from Chelsea but certainly a cautious one. Not a huge amount coming up front, while Newcastle lack that cutting edge.

CHANCE FOR NEWCASTLE!

18:43 , Jonathan Gorrie

51:00 - Joelinton meets Trippier’s cross and flicks on to Longstaff, who can’t keep his strike down.

Nizaar Kinsella at St James’ Park

Conor Gallagher is playing at wing back in the second half after Christian Pulisic comes on. Graham Potter does what he does, using a player out of position.

Here we go!

Change at the break

18:35 , Jonathan Gorrie

Christian Pulisic appears ready to come on.

HT: Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea

18:21 , Jonathan Gorrie

A cagey affair so far.

Newcastle want penalty

18:20 , Jonathan Gorrie

45:00 - Trippier’s cross hits Chalobah on the hand, though would be harsh to give it.

Chelsea squander a good chance

18:19 , Jonathan Gorrie

45:00 - Kovacic chooses the wrong option when breaking, allowing Newcastle to recover. Should be doing far better there.

Nizaar Kinsella at St James’ Park

18:16 , Jonathan Gorrie

Potter has clearly set out his team to be really solid but it has come at the expense of any creativity and flair.

Chelsea look solid away at Newcastle but have given the hosts large spells of possession. The game plan might work but it is not pretty.

Newcastle finishing the half stronger

18:14 , Jonathan Gorrie

40:00 - Corner after corner for Newcastle here.

Chelsea growing

18:08 , Jonathan Gorrie

32:00 - That wave of Newcastle attacks has slowed of late, with the visitors moving up the pitch.

Hard to get away from the idea everyone has their eyes on the World Cup, however.

Jorginho booked

18:04 , Jonathan Gorrie

27:00 - The Italian brings down Guimaraes on the centre circle.

Half chance for Broja

18:03 , Jonathan Gorrie

26:00 - Mount’s quick forward pass gets Broja in position to turn and shoot just outside the box. Not enough power to trouble to Pope.

Newcastle cranking up the pressure

18:01 , Jonathan Gorrie

25:00 - Chelsea going well to close the spaces but the last few minutes have seen the Blues having to put in a number of blocks from shots inside the box.

Broja yet to have a sniff

17:58 , Jonathan Gorrie

23:00 - Not really something you can blame him for given Chelsea don’t look all that fluid going forward but one of Potter’s big calls isn’t going to plan yet.

Chelsea too passive

17:55 , Jonathan Gorrie

21:00 - It’s not that Newcastle are dominating the ball, it’s just the hosts have much more of the meaningful play.

Chelsea in a solid enough shape but aren’t exactly causing problems.

Newcastle almost in!

17:49 , Jonathan Gorrie

18:00 - Brilliant play from Willock, dragging his marker to the byline before crossing for Wood. Chelsea, however, get it clear.

Good spell for the hosts.

Chelsea lucky to get away with one

17:47 , Jonathan Gorrie

14:00 - Mendy’s clearance just misses Burn, who would have had space and runners to punish some slow build-up play from the visitors.

Chelsea holding Newcastle at bay so far

17:44 , Jonathan Gorrie

10:00 - While you’d back them to given some the injuries in the Newcastle squad, the home crowd obviously make a difference and Howe’s side are playing with their tails up.

Still, Chelsea are limiting them thus far. Conceding early would be a nightmare against a team in this kind of form.

Nizaar Kinsella at St James’ Park

17:40 , Jonathan Gorrie

Ruben Loftus-Cheek goes off injured inside six minutes for Thiago Silva. It looked like he rolled his ankle running back into position after a set piece. Thiago Silva comes on who was curiously left on the bench without explanation.

Scare for Chelsea

17:38 , Jonathan Gorrie

06:00 - Loftus-Cheek goes down with an injury.

Fabian Schar is another getting treatment after his colission with Broja.

First bit of pressure for Chelsea

17:37 , Jonathan Gorrie

05:00 - Koulibaly heads Longstaff’s cross away.

Not a hugely intense start. Can probably blame the World Cup for that.

Early Chelsea half chance

17:35 , Jonathan Gorrie

03:00 - Broja won a free-kick, delivered by Jorginho from a wide area but Pope gathers with ease.

KICK-OFF

We’re off and running inside St James’ Park!

Can Chelsea get back on track before the World Cup?

Huge game in the top four race

17:10 , Jonathan Gorrie

With Tottenham beating Leeds, Newcastle have slipped to fourth.

Still, they are six points clear of Chelsea - albeit having played a game more - and could go nine with a win.

Feels a huge game for Chelsea and arguaby a must-win for Graham Potter.

Why is Raheem Sterling not in the Chelsea squad?

Don’t fear, England fans.

The forward is suffering from a slight illness so misses out, although is not in doubt for the World Cup.

Why Conor Gallagher made England’s World Cup squad

16:56 , Jonathan Gorrie

Conor Gallagher‘s Chelsea form was not the reason why he is going to the World Cup with England.

The 22-year-old’s inclusion was perhaps the second biggest surprise from Gareth Southgate‘s announcement on Thursday, behind the popular pick of James Maddison. Gallagher appears to have been given the nod ahead of Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse despite being left out of the last selection and dropping into the Under-21s.

That demotion was, in part, down to his struggles returning from his various loan spells under Thomas Tuchel. Under new Blues manager Graham Potter, Gallagher has had a slight uplift in form. Gallagher still, though, has only one goal, one assist and one red card to his name this term, and has started only five of Chelsea’s 20 games in all competitions.

Southgate and his technical staff at the FA, though, have seen enough over the years to agree Gallagher warrants to place on that plane to Qatar.

Gareth Southgate to hold talks with Raheem Sterling

16:49 , Jonathan Gorrie

Gareth Southgate will hold sit-down talks with Raheem Sterling before the World Cup to “find out what is going on” with the winger at Chelsea.

Southgate, who named his final 26-man squad for Qatar yesterday, also revealed concerns over Harry Kane’s fitness ahead of the tournament, with the England manager set to make managing his two leading forwards a priority before their opener on November 21.

Sterling has scored just once since Graham Potter took charge at Chelsea and has been switching between a wing-back role and the front three.

Asked about the 27-year-old’s stuttering form, Southgate said: “The first thing is always to sit and talk to players and look them in the eye and find out what is going on. Raheem has had a change of club and his scoring at the start was very good.

“He has had three managers in a short space of time if you go back to [Manchester] City. There is a lot to take on for a player when they move club.

Lewis Hall gives something to smile about as Chelsea beaten again by Manchester City

15:53 , Jonathan Gorrie

Lewis Hall made his case for a more regular role in Graham Potter’s squad as Chelsea looked ready for their six-week World Cup break in defeat to Manchester City.

It was telling that an 18-year-old with only one appearance to his name was the Blues’ best performer away in the Carabao Cup third round.

Hall should have walked out of the Etihad Stadium with a goal to his name but for two fine saves by Stefan Ortega.

The first came after he was picked out by Christian Pulisic on the counter-attack, pulling off a feint to cut inside and a shot with his weaker right foot that was well saved by the City goalkeeper.

Chelsea urged to treat ‘massive’ Newcastle clash as ‘final’ in Trevoh Chalobah rallying cry

15:44 , Jonathan Gorrie

Trevoh Chalobah has issued a rallying cry to his Chelsea team-mates to treat Saturday’s trip to Newcastle as a cup final after a downturn in results.

Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat away at Manchester City in the Carabao Cup third round means Graham Potter‘s side have now won only one of their last four matches.

With the Blues currently sitting seventh in the Premier League and six points behind in-form Newcastle, Chalobah has urged the squad to rise to the occasion in their final match before the World Cup hiatus.

“It’s going to be a massive game,” he said. “They’re in good form at the moment and it’s away from home so we need to make sure we rest and recover. It’s a final for us really, we want to go into the World Cup break on a high and with three points.”

Chelsea hopeful over injury return dates for James, Chilwell and Fofana

15:35 , Jonathan Gorrie

Chelsea are confident that Ben Chilwell, Wesley Fofana and Reece James will be ready to return to action after the World Cup in Qatar.

The injured defenders are aiming to be back to face Bournemouth on December 27 when the club resumes its matches in the Premier League.

Chilwell will avoid surgery after his hamstring tear and is confident about his recovery despite not being given a timeline to return by Chelsea’s medical staff.

The 25-year-old was injured in the 2-1 home win over Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League, ending his hopes of making Gareth Southgate’s squad. Fofana and James are progressing well from their knee injuries and will continue their rehabilitation programmes alongside Chilwell.

Graham Potter plots January transfers at Chelsea after talks with owners

15:24 , Jonathan Gorrie

Graham Potter says his first two months of being at Chelsea have felt like being in a ‘washing machine’ and is looking forward to the World Cup to regroup.

The Blues will embark on a mid-season warm-weather training camp during the tournament in Abu Dhabi.

That’s after all players not selected for the tournament in Qatar will get a break and Potter admits even he needs one.

“I’m a human being as well,” Potter said at Cobham Training Centre. “I’ve come from Brighton where everything was pretty much organised over three years and had similar pain that you go through.

“I ended up here pretty quickly and you are into the washing machine in terms of the games and the turnaround. You have to deal with all that which is going on and the number of matches you play.

Chelsea and Madrid in battle to convince Bruno Guimaraes as Newcastle plot pay rise

15:13 , Jonathan Gorrie

Chelsea have expressed an interest in Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

But the Blues know they face a difficult fight to prize the Brazilian away from St James’ Park.

Guimaraes has starred for Newcastle since his £40million move from Lyon in January and this season he has played a key role in helping the Magpies charge into the top four.

Real Madrid are also eyeing a move for the 24-year-old but he has four years left on his contract at Newcastle and their super-wealthy Saudi owners are unlikely to let him leave.

Chelsea and Real will be both be aware Newcastle are ready to sit down with Guimaraes over a new contract and an increased £200,000-a-week deal.

New Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake have a long-standing relationship with Newcastle’s owners and will tread carefully and respectfully over any possible move.

They enquired about Guimaraes after hearing Real Madrid could move to persuade the Brazil international to make a high-profile switch to the Bernabeu.

Leandro Trossard drops fresh transfer hint with Chelsea ready to spend in January

15:07 , Jonathan Gorrie

Leandro Trossard insists he must “wait and see” whether or not Chelsea make a move in January.

The Belgian has been one of the standout players in the first half of the Premier League season, scoring seven goals and laying on a further two assists in 13 appearances.

Already one off his most prolific season’s tally, the 27-year-old has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in order to reunite with former Brighton boss Graham Potter.

Chelsea are prepared to spend again in January and boast a good relationship with Brighton despite raiding them for talent over the past few months.

Prediction: 2-2 draw

15:03 , Jonathan Gorrie

This is a fascinating fixture to sign off for the World Cup as Newcastle try to send out another clear message that they are serious top-four contenders.

Only Manchester City and Arsenal have scored more goals than Howe’s side so far this season and confidence is at a soaring high after such a remarkable winning run.

A trip to St James’ Park in the current circumstances is the last thing Potter would have wanted as Chelsea desperately try to head into the World Cup break on a more positive note.

After being battered by Brighton, they were dominated by Arsenal and left to rue missed chances against City. Major improvements will be needed to avoid another dispiriting loss here.

We’re backing a lively draw in an entertaining clash. 2-2.
