Everton Fan View: What next for Toffees after Europa League exit?

Everton have crashed out of the Europa League after obtaining just one point from their first four matches. That means the joys of qualification were all for nothing. It was a tournament Everton should have been aiming to win with the money we’ve spent, but we didn’t even get remotely close.

It’s not the only competition Everton have exited recently, David Unsworth’s first game in temporary charge was the 2-1 loss over Chelsea in the League Cup meaning Everton are going to go another season without having ever won the competition.

Everton last won a trophy in 1995, and our chances of ending that streak remain depressingly low. This season it can now only take an unlikely FA Cup win to bring silverware back to the club, but thankfully we will have about two months until those games begin.

The desperation of some fans is clear with shouts that the managerial position should go to someone like Sam Allardyce to make sure that we don’t get relegated. No matter how dire it feels right now; the facts are we’re one point from safety with 28 games to play. It’s hardly time to press the panic button on a manager that no-one will want in charge next season.

Unsworth has failed his audition

I wanted Unsworth to succeed at his temporary position, but it’s clear a lot more is needed than just a bit more passion and heart into the dressing room, these players need to learn how to play with each other.

It feels awful right now, and our hopes of a successful Premier League season are all but gone, but it’s still only November and the Everton board need to think with a clear head and get a manager who can take this club to the new era with the new stadium.

We can’t think any more about league position; we just have to take each game as it comes. Everton need a much clearer transfer policy and find a way to get our current crop of players working together until we can get in the players required. Its horrible watching Everton matches at the moment, with fans trying to recall when was the last time it was this bad.

Things are bad, and it does feel desperate, but talk of relegation is hugely premature, that won’t happen. We’re only a couple of good results away from life looking okay again and being mid-table. That’s where we’re most likely going to finish this season, which is hugely disappointing after it looked as though we were progressing.

We need to recoup, do the right business in January, give the FA Cup our best shot and get some momentum going again. But first things first, we need to find a manager who can get some results, we need them badly. But not badly enough to give Sam Allardyce a call just yet.
