NFL draft: Bengals reunite Joe Burrow with LSU WR Ja'Marr Chase with No. 5 pick
Joe Burrow will have some familiar help for his sophomore NFL season.
The Cincinnati Bengals selected LSU wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase with the No. 5 pick in Thursday's NFL draft, reuniting last year's No. 1 overall pick with his national championship teammate from 2019.
Chase was the first receiver off the board in a first round loaded with talent at the position. The Bengals bypassed a need at offensive line with the fifth pick, opting instead to draft a weapon for their second-year quarterback that he has obvious chemistry with.
During LSU's 2019 run to the national championship, Burrow and Chase connected on 84 passes for 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns. Chase opted out of his junior season at LSU amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The selection means the Bengals will likely consider drafting an offensive lineman in the second round, where they own the 38th pick of the draft.
Early run on SEC pass catchers
The No. 6 pick in the draft also saw an SEC reunion. The Miami Dolphins selected Alabama's Jaylen Waddle, reuniting him with Tua Tagovailoa. The Crimson Tide speedster will add a deep threat element to the Dolphins offense as Miami looks to build around its second-year quarterback.
The Waddle selection marked three straight SEC pass catchers off the board after the Atlanta Falcons picked Florida tight end Kyle Pitts at No. 4.
More first-round reunions
The Bengals and Dolphins weren't the only teams to reunite college quarterbacks with their top weapons. The Jacksonville Jaguars took Clemson running back Travis Etienne at No. 25 after making Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence the No. 1 overall pick.
Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts will also reconnect with Devonta Smith after the Eagles traded up with the Dallas Cowboys to draft the speedy Alabama wide receiver at No. 10. Hurts threw passes to Smith for two seasons before transferring to Oklahoma as a senior.
